With Arjun Erigaisi as their star player and a strong Indian presence, Team MGD1 wins FIDE World Rapid Team Championship 2025

Indian Express7 days ago

Team MGD1, with Indian Grandmasters Arjun Erigaisi as their star player and N Srinath as the non-playing captain, won the FIDE World Rapid Team Championship 2025 in London on Saturday. A Pune-based chess management firm, Team MGD1 became the first Indian team to achieve this feat in the tournament's brief three-year history.
Team MGD1 also featured the most Indian players in their squad. Alongside Erigaisi and Srinath, the team included Harikrishna Pentala, Pranav V, Leon Luke Mendonca, Atharvaa Tayade, and Hariharan Raghavan. Spanish GM David Anton Guijarro and Greek IM Stavroula Tsolakidou completed the roster as overseas players.
In the 12-round Swiss-format tournament with a time control of 15 minutes plus a 10-second increment from move one, Team MGD1 won 10 of 12 rounds, with one loss and one draw, finishing with 21 points. They closely edged out Hexamind Chess Team, which finished with 20 points and featured two Indian players — Vidit Gujrathi and Divya Deshmukh.
The title was secured in a close final round against Malcolm's Mates, with crucial wins from Erigaisi, Pranav, and Tayade. Five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand's Freedom team took third place with 17 match points. Another Indian participant, Nihal Sarin, represented Ashdod Elit Chess Club alongside strong players like Pavel Eljanov and Benjamin Gledura.
Anand hailed the format of the event. 'What is commendable is that so many teams composed of fans and club players chose to participate, giving it a slight festival feel,' the five-time World Champion and India's greatest ever chess player told The Indian Express from London.
With this victory in the tournament's third edition, Team MGD1 matched the title wins of inaugural champions WR Chess and 2024 winners Al-Ain ACMG UAE. WR Chess Team were the top seeds with big names like Hikaru Nakamura, Alireza Firouzja, Jan-Krzysztof Duda and Hou Yifan, but they finished fifth.
The FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships 2025 is an event open to any team around the globe that meets the official requirements. According to FIDE, the teams can be made of club members, members of different federations or any other chess players. This structure has been designed to ensure an inclusive, level playing field where each team must have at least six and no more than nine players. The teams also have to include at least one female player and one recreational player who is defined as 'one who never achieved FIDE Standard, Rapid or Blitz Rating of 2000 (or an equivalent national rating, as determined by FIDE's Global Strategy Commission) Elo points (or unrated) up to and including the March 2025 rating lists.'
Over 110 GMs competed across 52 teams in the rapid event. Some teams — like Noval Group Kyrgyzstan, Oxbridge, and Berlin Lasker Legends — had no grandmasters. Others, such as The London Legends and Rey Ahogado, featured no titled players.
'It's a very attractive format with all the expected excitement, and I believe this event will grow in strength in coming years,' Anand added.
For FIDE, the international chess body, the event holds great significance. President Arkady Dvorkovich stated: 'This pivotal event distinguishes itself as the largest team tournament featuring both professional and non-professional players. The immense value of events like the WRB Teams lies in providing unique opportunities for recreational players and new chess talents to play alongside — and directly against — stars in genuine tournament settings. We're already seeing significant interest from potential hosts for next year's edition, and we're optimistic about this event's future and similar competitions globally.'
Srinath, after the win, said: 'I'm absolutely elated. This is definitely one of the most special wins of my career. It's a fun event that has already fit into the cycle by its third year. While more relaxed than classical events, it remains intense nevertheless.'
The total prize fund is €500,000, with €310,000 allocated to the rapid event and €190,000 to the blitz event.

Bad news for Shubman Gill, Indian captain may pay huge amount of money for...

In this collection of pictures we shall know the bad news for Shubman Gill, interestingly he could also pay a huge amount of money for that. Let's take a closer look. On the first day of the Leeds Test against England (20 June), Indian captain Shubman Gill's brilliance was seen. Shubman scored a century in his first Test innings as captain. This was the sixth century of Shubman's Test career. When the game ended on the first day, Shubman Gill was not out after scoring 127 runs and vice-captain Rishabh Pant was not out after scoring 65 runs. The Indian team's score was also 359 runs for the loss of three wickets in the first innings. This brilliant century of Shubman Gill is being discussed. Along with this, the Indian captain was also in the headlines on the first day of the match (20 June) due to another reason. Actually, on the first day of this match, Shubman came out to bat wearing black socks, which is being considered a violation of ICC rules. Let us tell you that according to clause 19.45 of ICC's Clothing and Equipment Rules, players have to wear white, cream or light grey colored socks in Test cricket. But Shubman Gill came out wearing black colored socks. This rule came into effect from May 2023 after the recommendations of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). Now it will depend on the match referee Richie Richardson what decision he takes. If the match referee believes that Shubman has deliberately committed a Level-1 offense, then the Indian captain can be fined, which can be from 0 to 50 percent. However, if the referee feels that Shubman Gill did this inadvertently or due to circumstances (eg- the white socks were wet), then he can escape the fine. For ICC's Level-1 offence, players can be fined 0 to 50 percent and given demerit points. For Level-2 offence, players can be fined 50 to 100 percent and banned (eg. 1 Test or 2 ODIs). However, cases related to dress code rarely fall under Level-2 offence. 1. In 2016, Chris Gayle used a black bat in a Big Bash League (BBL) match, which was against the rules. Gayle was then fined 10 percent of his match fee, 2. In 2018, KL Rahul came wearing a helmet in a Test match against Afghanistan which was against ICC rules. In such a situation, he was fined 10 percent of his match fee, 3. Pakistani batsman Imam-ul-Haq came out with a logo on his bat in the match against England during the 2019 ODI World Cup, which was against ICC rules. Imam was fined 15 percent of his match fee, 4. Joe Root had put a Rainbow symbol on his jersey in the match against India in 2021, which was in support of the LGBTQ+ community. Due to this, he was fined 15 percent of his match fee.

'Niche Hi Reh...': Rishabh Pant Warns Shubman Gill After Stepping Out To Shoaib Bashir

Last Updated: Rishabh Pant advised Shubman Gill to keep his shot grounded if stepping out to Shoaib Bashir. With the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant has now entered the 'senior players' club of the Indian Test team. It's not just a decorative term. Being a senior member puts plenty of responsibility on Pant's shoulders that includes being the guiding light for the juniors around him. And not to forget he's the vice-captain of the Test team too. On Friday, during the first Day 1 of the series opening Test between India and England in Leeds, Pant was seen advising his captain Shubman Gill to keep his shot grounded when stepping out to England spinner Shoaib Bashir. ' Niche hi reh nikal raha hai toh. Ye aa jaata, uth gaya. (Kee your shot grounded if you're stepping out. This one rose and could've been caught.)," Pant can be heard telling Gill in a clip shared by Star Sports. Gill scored a memorable century and became the fifth Indian player to do so on Test captaincy debut joining the likes of Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Virat Kohli. At the close of play, he was unbeaten on 127. On the other hand, Pant is 65 not out and with Gill, has added 139 runs for the fourth wicket so far. At the close of play India were 359/3 in 85 overs. This was after England won the toss and surprisingly, opted to bowl first. They were made to toil hard with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal adding 91 runs for the first wicket. England did hit back with quick blows as they got rid of Rahul and B Sai Sudharsan in quick succession to end the morning session. However, India made a superb recovery losing just one more wicket in the remaining two sessions. First Published:
