Rishabh Pant advised Shubman Gill to keep his shot grounded if stepping out to Shoaib Bashir.
With the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant has now entered the 'senior players' club of the Indian Test team. It's not just a decorative term. Being a senior member puts plenty of responsibility on Pant's shoulders that includes being the guiding light for the juniors around him. And not to forget he's the vice-captain of the Test team too.
On Friday, during the first Day 1 of the series opening Test between India and England in Leeds, Pant was seen advising his captain Shubman Gill to keep his shot grounded when stepping out to England spinner Shoaib Bashir.
' Niche hi reh nikal raha hai toh. Ye aa jaata, uth gaya. (Kee your shot grounded if you're stepping out. This one rose and could've been caught.)," Pant can be heard telling Gill in a clip shared by Star Sports.
Gill scored a memorable century and became the fifth Indian player to do so on Test captaincy debut joining the likes of Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Virat Kohli. At the close of play, he was unbeaten on 127. On the other hand, Pant is 65 not out and with Gill, has added 139 runs for the fourth wicket so far.
At the close of play India were 359/3 in 85 overs.
This was after England won the toss and surprisingly, opted to bowl first. They were made to toil hard with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal adding 91 runs for the first wicket.
England did hit back with quick blows as they got rid of Rahul and B Sai Sudharsan in quick succession to end the morning session. However, India made a superb recovery losing just one more wicket in the remaining two sessions.

Only Ben Slater (96) scored more than the wicketkeeper-batter, who hit 12 fours and a six during his stint. The 26-year-old signed for Nottinghamshire on a short-term deal to play two matches, replacing South Africa's Kyle Verreynne. Kishan then took his place behind the wickets, following which he took a catch to remove opener Adam Lyth off Mohammad Abbas' bowling. Meanwhile, Jofra Archer picked up a wicket on his red-ball return while playing for Sussex against Durham. The 30-year-old pacer bowled 14 overs, recording six maidens and giving away 28 runs. He also contributed valuable runs with the bat, scoring three fours and a six en route to his 34-ball 31. Archer, who has not been a part of First-Class cricket in four years due to injuries, could be in contention for a return to England's Test side, which is currently facing India in a five-match Test series.
