Fitness trainer shares 5 exercises for good hip joint health to undo the damage of long hours sitting at work

Hindustan Times5 days ago

The hip joint is one of the most important joints, primarily responsible for torso and lower body movements, as well as overall body balance and posture. All in all, it is a critical joint for movement. However, with a sedentary lifestyle, sitting hunched over at a desk in poor posture for long periods can make the hip joint very stiff, frequently causing lower back pain. A little hip mobility work and stretching exercises may help reduce the hip stiffness and undo the damage caused by prolonged sitting by keeping it agile.
London-based fitness trainer, Ruben De Monte, took to Instagram on June 15 and shared 5 stretching exercises that help ease tight hips and improve mobility. Moreover, as he described, the set of exercises is also suitable for runners, athletes for a quick warm-up.

As Ruben shared, one minute for each exercise, and then repeat the entire sequence 3 times, making the routine a total of 15 minutes.

The series consists of:
This set of exercises targets different areas of the lower body, all ultimately benefiting the hip joint. Whether it's loosening the hamstrings with the help of squats or stretching the side muscles (obliques) with side bends, each movement in the exercises actively enhances flexibility, reduces stiffness, and supports better hip mobility over time. Additionally, not only does a good set of exercises keep the joint agile, but it also prevents the risk of injury.
However, hip pain can also become extreme and severe, affecting day-to-day functions and movements. One of the conditions that falls under the umbrella of hip pain is hip impingement, which occurs when there is unusual contact between the femur and the pelvis during movement. This causes severe pain in the lower back.
In an earlier interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Aashish Arbat, Orthopedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon at Jehangir Multispeciality Hospitals in Pune, shared when one should visit a doctor because of hip impingement. He said, 'The symptoms are a clicking or popping sensation during movement, particularly when engaging in activities like squatting or sitting cross-legged, discomfort while performing any activities, hip pain while walking, stiffness in the hip and groin, lower back pain, and inability to flex the hip. One should consult the doctor after experiencing these symptoms.'

Often, yoga is squeezed into the small windows before or after the workday, but with work taking up the lion's share of our time and energy, those moments are easy to miss. HT Lifestyle reached out to experts to understand how yoga can support mental wellbeing at work and ways organisations can thoughtfully include the practice in their work culture. Mental benefits of introducing yoga at work Stress is high due to deadlines and work responsibilities. (Shutterstock) Yoga may help employees focus better. It acts like a practical tool, going beyond just a wellness trend. With the high pressure at work, managing all the work responsibilities, yoga may be an effective way to handle stress. Dr Ajit Dandekar, Head of Psychiatry and Mental Health, Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai, shared three key mental health benefits of introducing yoga at the workplace. He outlined three key benefits of introducing yoga in the workplace. Dr Dandekar added, 'The first impact of introducing yoga at the workplace is stress management. Research on Indian and global employees shows workplace yoga can reduce perceived-stress scores by almost two-thirds. Stress, being one of the common mental health issues among the working population, impact on this scale that is substantial. Yoga also uplifts mood significantly. And lastly, it deepens restorative sleep and overall quality of life, so we return to our desks fresher and more focused the next morning.' Strategies to bring yoga into the workplace. The right strategies make yoga a part of work culture.(Shutterstock) While yoga is making the rounds, with everyone offering their two cents on incorporating it into daily life, the practical application often remains out of reach. But a grounded, actionable approach helps move yoga beyond just a trend, making it more than an annual duty on Yoga Day. Shruti Swaroop, Founder of Embrace Consulting and Co-Founder of the International Inclusion Alliance, shared with HT Lifestyle that adding yoga at work doesn't require grand setups or lengthy sessions. With the right intention, even small sessions may boost focus and foster a healthy work culture. She said, 'As a founder committed to building mindful, resilient teams, I've witnessed firsthand how even small, consistent integration of yoga into daily work life can create a lasting impact. And no, it doesn't require elaborate studios or hour-long routines. It requires intention, policy support, and human-centred design. Workplace yoga has been found through studies to improve focus, reduce stress, and create improved posture, lower absenteeism, and higher employee morale. Yoga in the workplace needs to shift from being a one-time thing per year to a facet of the company ecosystem. Not everyone needs to do yoga, it just means that everyone needs to be given the option to, without guilt or exclusion." Shruti shared 5 actionable strategies on how to include yoga into everyday work culture: 1. Micro-yoga breaks during work Adopt brief, guided yoga breaks, 10 minutes, twice daily, for stretches and breathing exercises that can be performed at the desk. These do not involve changing clothes or special equipment, making them accessible and inclusive. HR's role: Arrange virtual or in-office facilitators; invite team leads to participate. International Yoga Day 2025: "Yoga Has Been Very Instrumental In Shaping My Life," Says Malaika Arora

Gurugram (Haryana): International Yoga Day was marked with a special event at DLF CyberHub on Saturday, where yoga enthusiasts gathered under the open sky to practice and reflect on the benefits of yoga. Among the attendees was actor and wellness advocate Malaika Arora, who actively participated in the session and shared her thoughts on how yoga continues to shape her life. Speaking to news agency ANI, Malaika described yoga as "very instrumental" in her life and shared how it has helped her both mentally and physically over the years. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Malaika Arora (@malaikaaroraofficial) "I would like to say I would give a lot of credit to my genes, but yoga has been very, very instrumental in shaping a lot of my life. I feel that practicing on my mat genuinely makes me happy; it centers me, it gives me focus. So yes, I would give a lot of credit to yoga in my life." Malaika went on to share her thoughts on stress in everyday life and how yoga helps her stay balanced. Addressing the increasing mental pressure in today's world, she said, "Life is full of stress, and yoga can help anyone, not just public figures, to find calm and focus." "I feel it has nothing to do with being a public figure. Everybody, on a daily basis, deals with a lot, whether you're a public figure, a housewife, or someone working a 9-to-5 job. We all deal with physical or mental issues on a daily basis. Life is full of stress," Malaika told ANI. "Unfortunately, we are surrounded by situations. There's so much stimuli around us, phones being one of them. Every day, looking at phones and being on social media causes a lot of anxiety and stress. So, I think people today should find ways to de-stress, whatever it may be - whether it's being outdoors, doing yoga, swimming, or meditating. Find that one activity that works for you, and make time for yourself to de-stress and love yourself," she added. Meanwhile, the open-air event was hosted in a peaceful setting, something Malaika said enhanced the experience. "It was amazing to be outdoors in such a beautiful environment under the sun like this. It truly is a blessing to be able to do something like pretty much what I do every day - one hour on my mat, religiously," she said. Every year, the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) is celebrated on June 21. This year marks the 11th International Day of Yoga, with the theme "Yoga for One Earth, One Health", which echoes the vital truth that personal wellness and planetary health are inseparably linked. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Saturday, took part in the 11th International Day of Yoga celebrations, where he hailed yoga as a gift "beyond age" that transcends all boundaries and unites humanity in "health and harmony."
