Coronation Street star Sydney Martin declares 'prove them wrong' as job before soap fame revealed
Coronation Street star Sydney Martin has been flooded with support as she seeminlgy revealed she proved people wrong by getting a huge role on the long-running show.
is now best known for playing Betsy Swain in the ITV soap. But joining Corrie was Sydney's big break, having previously auditioned for other roles in the programme.
Sydney, from Rossendale, was officially revealed as being Betsy Swain, the daughter of established character DS Lisa Swain, last summer after already popping up in the ITV soap, simply as Sabrina Adetiba's mate.

She made her on-screen debut last summer as Betsy arrived on the Cobbles amidst the shocking Joel Deering and Lauren Bolton grooming storyline, before it was revealed that she was the daughter of Lisa and her late partner, Becky.
The role marks Sydney's first major TV move and previously speaking about landing the job, the soap star, who is 23 but playing 16-year-old Betsy, told the Manchester Evening News and other press that she originally applied for two smaller roles at the beginning of 2024.
However, two weeks later, she was invited to audition for the role of teenager Betsy, which she was given after a two-month audition process.
And taking to social media, it appears Sydney didn't always get support for her acting dreams. She shared a video on TikTok in which she could be seen at her former job, in supermarket Tesco.
Across the clip, a message read: "And the customer service assistant is studying 'acting'." The video then switched the show a string of pictures from her time in Corrie so far, including her very own cast card, standing in front of the Rovers Return and attending the British Soap Awards.
Alongside the post, set to Billy Joel's 'Piano Man', Sydney wrote: "Prove em wrong kiddo. Never let anyone tell you, you can't reach for the stars!!!!"
And the support quickly came flooding in. One said: "you are a great little actress." Another commented: "oh this is incredible!! tesco ain't an easy job either bless you, so proud of you!!" A third wrote: "so so so proud, my inspiration."
Another said: "Must be incredible to prove the doubters wrong," to which Sydney replied: "Used it as fuel." A fifth shared: "you have come so far!! you should be so proud of yourself sydney." Another fan added: "You should be so proud of yourself as we all are of you Sydney !!! You deserve the world and more."
Sydney previously told how her employers got the news of her Corrie gig before her family. She got the call about landing the role of Betsy while preparing to settle down and watch Pitch Perfect 3 with her flatmates.
She previously told the Manchester Evening News: "I got a phone call, ran into the corner of a flat and was like, 'It's going to be a no, keep watching. Just let me have my moment!'
"But my agent phoned me and said, 'Go hand in your notice!' I was doing six days a week at Tesco which is quite the career change!"
On telling her parents, Sydney admitted: "I did go to Tesco and hand my notice in first!" before sharing how her dad was concerned she'd quit her job and whether she'd need a reference from the supermarket chain.
She added: "They were overjoyed. They always say they don't know where I got my creative bones from because they're in completely different careers... I could not have asked for a better first opportunity. They're by biggest fans. They're over the moon. I had my first little picture in a magazine and they've got about ten of them."

Jessie J made powerful statement at Capital's Summertime Ball ahead of cancer surgery
Jessie J bid a powerful, temporary goodbye to her fans attending Capital's Summertime Ball on Sunday, June 22, as she prepared for life-saving surgery. Diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year, the London-born popstar used her brief Wembley Stadium gig as a platform to share a touching message with the thousands there and millions tuning in at home. Before slipping into her best-known track 'Price Tag', she listed all the things she's grateful for. "Summertime Ball, today this show is my last show before I go and beat breast cancer," began the singer (real name Jessica Cornish) during the ITV1 broadcast. "So it's so special to be here, you have no idea. I feel so proud to be from the UK and to be this honest person - we just say what we feel. With this being my last show before I go and have surgery, it's the most special thing and I'm so grateful for this life, for you guys, for my career, for my son, my partner, my parents, my family, my band, my crew, my people. "We are so lucky," continued Jessie. "We have so much to live for, so much joy, so many things to do. It feels so special, so I wanna celebrate this song here with you right now. This song is called 'Price Tag.'" "I want to share it with my fans and the people that care about me, and also I'm a sharer. I've always shared everything that I go through in my life," she said in a video. "Before 'No Secrets' came out I was diagnosed with early breast cancer. I'm highlighting the word early. Cancer sucks in any form but I'm holding on to the word early. I have been in and out of tests throughout this whole period." Making light of the situation, Jessie joked that it's a "very dramatic way to get a boob job", before announcing that she'd be disappearing "for a bit" after the Summertime Ball. "I will come back with massive t**s and more music," she added. "I know there are so many people that are going through this same thing and I'm honestly just reaching out to hold your hand and because I need mine held too." Elsewhere in this star-packed music marathon was a reunion between Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff, who performed 'Gettin' Jiggy wit It' and 'Summertime' together for the first time in years. To celebrate Father's Day - the show was actually recorded last weekend - Smith pulled his son Jaden out from the crowd and hugged him. "That's my guy!" he smiled as the Karate Kid actor sauntered offstage. Mariah Carey, who closed out the Summertime Ball with 'We Belong Together', spoke to hosts Jordan North, Siân Welby and Chris Stark backstage for a playful Q&A session too. Answering a question on her own mythology - specifically whether it's true that she doesn't acknowledge the passage of time, the so-called 'Songbird Supreme' replied: "That is true. I just don't believe in it." Apparently, Carey doesn't "have a birthday" yet partakes in anniversaries, and when Stark facetiously asked her what would happen if they wanted to meet up later on (in terms of timings), the singer claimed: "We'd have somebody call you and figure it out." KSI, Reneé Rapp, Jade, JLS, Benson Boone, Myles Smith, Rita Ora, and Tate McRea all featured in the Summertime Ball lineup. Capital's Summertime Ball aired on ITV1 and ITVX.
