Parrish woman killed in Manatee County crash on U.S. 301, FHP says
A 71-year-old Parrish woman got into a fatal car crash after running a red light on U.S. 301 in Manatee County, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.
The wreck happened around 1:19 p.m. Friday at the intersection of U.S. 301 and County Road 675 in Parrish, according to the agency.
Troopers say that the Parrish woman was driving a Toyota Prius westbound on C.R. 675/Rutland Road when she failed to stop for a steady red light at the intersection with U.S. 301.
Her car entered the path of a Ram 1500 pickup truck driving north on U.S. 301, and the truck hit the left side of her car, FHP said.
Emergency responders took the Parrish woman to an area hospital with serious injuries, where she later died, the agency said.
Troopers did not report any injuries for the 34-year-old Palmetto man who was driving the pickup truck.
The crash is still under investigation, FHP said.

Florida Attorney General proposes "Alligator Alcatraz" as immigration detention site in Everglades
Florida's attorney general has proposed a temporary detention facility called "Alligator Alcatraz," which he wants to build in the Everglades to house what he calls "criminal aliens." As of now, the area is an old airstrip used as a pilot training facility and is surrounded by pythons and alligators. In a video posted on social media platform "X", Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said: "Efficient. Low cost opportunity to build a temporary detention facility because you don't need to invest that much into the perimeter. People get out. There's not much waiting for them, other than alligators and pythons. Nowhere to go, nowhere to hide." Uthmeier says the facility would sit on the already constructed runway, hold more than 1,000 beds, and be surrounded by the Everglades — though it is not part of Everglades National Park. Many are rejecting the idea, citing environmental concerns — including Executive Director of Friends of the Everglades, Eve Samples. "This site is really important to Friends of the Everglades. It's actually the reason Friends of the Everglades was founded by Marjory Stoneman Douglas in 1969, to stop what would have been the world's largest airport from being built right there," said Samples. "We call on the governor to put a stop to this proposal right now. It's a terribly bad idea...," continued Samples. Officials haven't shared the projected cost of the project but say it could be operational within 30 to 60 days after construction.

Former Ohio State football player Kirk Barton charged in deadly Dublin crash
Former Ohio State offensive lineman Kirk Barton faces aggravated vehicular manslaughter charges after a fatal crash early June 21 in Dublin. Barton, 40, of Lewis Center, is accused of speeding in the early-morning crash that killed Ethan Wence Perry, 24, address unknown, according to a post on the City of Dublin's website. Police received a report of the crash shortly before 3 a.m. Barton was driving a Ford F-150 Raptor pickup eastbound on U.S. 33 before he crashed into Perry's westbound Lexus on West Bridge Street, just west of Franklin Street, the city said. Perry died at the scene. The city says the initial police investigation indicates that Barton was speeding at the time of the crash, but police have not said how fast they suspect Barton of driving. The crash shuttered West Bridge Street and North High Street for hours. The roads reopened about 7 hours after the crash. Police took Barton into custody and transferred him to the Franklin County Jail, where he remained as of 1 p.m. June 21 with no bond. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance on June 23 in Franklin County Municipal Court. Barton was an offensive lineman for the Buckeyes from 2003-2007 and started at right tackle for four seasons. He earned first-team All-American honors and was team captain for the 11-2 Big Ten championship-winning Ohio State team in 2007 before being drafted in the Chicago Bears in the seventh round of the NFL draft. Barton has a history of traffic offenses, according to Franklin County Municipal Court records, including: Driving 81 mph along Interstate 270 on Feb. 23, 2022. He paid a $172 fine, according to court records. He pleaded down an operative vehicle while intoxicated charge to reckless operation and failure to stop after his Aug. 20, 2017, arrest in Columbus, court records say. He received a fine and a 180-day license suspension. On Feb. 3, 2010, he was arrested on suspicion of OVI. Court records show the charge was dismissed and he paid a small fine for a traffic violation. He paid a $150 fine after being cited for driving 70 mph in a 65-mph zone on Feb. 7, 2008, court records say. Teen charged with murder in Riviera shooting of man, 18
RIVIERA BEACH — Riviera Beach police arrested a boy Friday they believe fatally shot an 18-year-old Lake Worth Beach man who recently graduated from high school near the top of his class and whom his family said had dreams of being a firefighter. City police are charging the juvenile, whom officers are not naming, with second-degree murder in the killing of Elias Timothy Morrero, the Riviera Beach Police Department said Saturday in a news release. He is also being charged with being a minor possessing a firearm and using a firearm for a felony. The alleged killer was booked Friday, June 20, police said, and is now being held in the Juvenile Assessment Center. City police responded Thursday, June 19, to a report of a shooting in the 2800 block of Avenue S. There they found Morrero, who had stopped his car near 28th Street and Avenue S and exited the vehicle clutching his neck from a gunshot injury. Paramedics took Morrero to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, where he died. Morrero's family has set up an online fundraiser on GoFundMe for his funeral, titled "Forever 18: Remembering Elias Our Brightest Light." His family is hoping to raise $20,000. They were more than halfway to that total Saturday afternoon thanks to nearly 200 donors. Morrero had graduated from high school in May with honors, the fundraiser web page says. He was also captain of his Fire Academy class, the training program required in Florida for aspiring firefighters. And he was a big brother to five younger siblings — Elianna, Elissia, Everly, Elijah and Ezariah, the family said. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Tillman Funeral Home & Crematory.
