Airports hate these sneaky hacks that can save travelers money this summer, experts say

Airports can seem over the top with their food and beverage prices — but according to travel experts at eShores, sometimes splurging will save you money in the long run. The experts claimed that travelers are wasting their money on 'unnecessary' add-ons for flights, such as early boarding and seat selection, when they should be allocating their money elsewhere. Instead of shelling out money on these frivolous options, the specialists advise spending on extras that will enhance the overall travel experience. Here are the expert-backed add-ons that are worth the splurge and the ones that should be avoided. The experts told the Daily Mail that lounge passes are worth the extra money. The eShore team claimed that the pricey cost of airport lounge access might end up being less money travelers would eventually spend on meals and drinks at the terminal. An airport meal can range from around $20 to $50, while access to a lounge can cost approximately $40 to $60 per person and includes so much more. Another pricey add-on worth looking into is fast-track security, which allows passengers to get their belongings checked in a separate private lane with a reduced wait time. Investing in a program like TSA Pre-Check or CLEAR, or sometimes even third-party services, will help passengers get to their lounge or gate faster. Day trip excursions are also worth the money, according to experts. Rather than paying for separate flights and accommodations while traveling, globetrotters can save a buck by booking an organized day trip. An excursion can offer benefits such as visiting multiple destinations at a cheaper price, which can also include meals and transport. While some perks are worth the money — many others aren't, such as early boarding. The eShore experts claim that paying extra for early boarding is 'rarely' an advantage, especially if a traveler already has an assigned seat. 'Early boarding doesn't guarantee faster departure times; you'll still disembark in the same order,' the experts told the outlet. 'Unless you have mobility needs or are travelling with very young children, it's money better spent on your actual holiday.' Some budget airlines charge passengers to choose their seats on a plane. But the experts claim this isn't worth the money — especially for short flights. 'For short-haul flights under two hours, for many people, being separated isn't the end of the world (and might even mean a bit of quiet time),' they explained. 'Unless you're flying with young children or sitting with your travel companion is a must, this is an easy cost to skip.' Unless you're going on a longer trip, paying for checked luggage might be a waste of money. The experts advise travelers going on a weekend getaway or trips that are just a few days long to skip checking a bag and instead utilize carry-ons. 'With smart packing techniques (think compression cubes and versatile outfits), everything you need for a long weekend or week-long city break can easily fit in hand luggage.'

As of today, Capital One has officially opened its largest lounge yet at JFK, joining its growing portfolio of airport lounges in Denver (DEN), Washington Dulles (IAD) and Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW). As a Queens native and lifelong New Yorker, I was especially eager to see how the brand would capture the energy of New York. After touring the lounge and indulging in a few too many bagels, locally brewed beers and a charcuterie board curated by an in-house cheesemonger, I can confidently say Capital One understood the assignment. The new lounge is a sophisticated, food-centric escape from the chaos of both the terminal and the city — the kind of place that might just make you hope for a flight delay. Here's how to get in and what to expect once you're inside. To access Capital One Lounges, you'll need to hold a Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card or Capital One Venture X Business, which currently include access for the primary cardholder and up to two guests. But starting February 1, 2026, free guest access will require $75,000 in annual card spend or guests will have to pay $35. Additionally, authorized users will need to pay $125 each to retain their lounge privileges. To find the lounge, you'll need to get to Terminal 4, which is used by Delta Air Lines and many international carriers, including Emirates, KLM, Singapore Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Aeromexico. This terminal is accessible by the AirTrain, which connects to New York's public transportation. After security, you'll have to take the escalators down to find the lounge. Thoughtful design and space Prev Next Building on the legacy of Capital One Lounges, the new JFK location continues the brand's reputation for polished design and elevated amenities. That much is clear from the moment you walk in, with a display of art from local painters capturing the essence of New York — think moody tableau scenes of subway life and crushed coffee cups. Space is a rare commodity in New York and even rarer in a New York City airport. But the Capital One Lounge delivers. The expansive layout includes two private rooms available in 45-minute increments, perfect for taking a work call or sneaking in a quick catnap. While you can't reserve them in advance, there's plenty of room around the lounge to work in privacy. Need to freshen up before takeoff? The lounge features sleek private showers, complete with Dyson hair dryers. There's also a quiet, well-equipped parents' room, designed for soothing little ones back to sleep. Local flavor If you're invested in the world of airport lounges, you probably know that Capital One has made a name for itself with chef-driven food and thoughtful design. The brand has even partnered with culinary titans like José Andrés for its Washington, D.C. (DCA) location, which is equipped with a caviar cart and fresh tapas. At JFK, the food and drink offerings are just as impressive. Upon entrance, the coffee bar serves fresh bagels from the famous Ess-A-Bagel, a New York staple known for its hand-rolled perfection. With classics like a proper BEC (bacon, egg and cheese) and lox on a bagel, breakfast here can feel very New York. The menu also features healthy options like spicy tofu wraps and a New York bodega bowl filled with greens and grains. And because New Yorkers take their caffeine seriously, the coffee selection lives up to the hype. The bar features coffee from local favorite Bean & Bean, plus La Colombe on tap, including a delightful chai draft I'd happily go out of my way for. The small plates bar serves up bites like heirloom tomato crostini and, of course, avocado toast. You can also order hot dishes from the QR codes throughout the lounge. A dedicated expert is available daily to walk guests through a curated, 45-minute pairing experience, showcasing a rotating selection of artisan cheeses, fruits and wine. We savored a stunning spread of goat and sheep's milk cheeses, paired with dried fruits and finished with an elegant wine. Prev Next A dazzling bar As a cocktail enthusiast, my heart skipped a beat at the first glimpse of elegant glassware, glimmering bottles, beers on tap and the moody glow of ornate overhead lighting. Just from thumbing through the menu alone, I felt the team had captured New York City's charm. The Capital One Lounge bar felt nothing like a nondescript airport bar. Capital One collaborated with Laird & Co., America's oldest distillery, to create a cocktail menu rooted in classic recipes. Alongside gorgeous photography, it paid homage to neighborhoods like the Lower East Side and Red Hook. Guests can sip their way through the city with drinks like the Staten Island Sunrise or Van Brunt Old Fashioned. And for sober or sober-curious travelers, the mocktail list is just as impressive. Take the Child of Clay, for example: it's a fluffy matcha-infused drink that could rival your favorite barista's creation. For those who can't resist an airport beer, Capital One partnered with Brooklyn-based Grimm Artisanal Ales to serve its award-winning crisp beer on tap. Getting to the airport is often the most stressful part of travel, and JFK doesn't exactly have a reputation for being easy. But the Capital One Lounge feels like entering a tasteful tribute to the city with New York-style bagels, local craft beer and peaceful nooks that offer a genuine sense of escape. The lounge captures the spirit of the city without the chaos — it's stylish, thoughtful and packed with authentic flavor. You'll Need A Key To Enter This Subterranean Cocktail Bar In Raleigh

Sous Terre. This Raleigh nightspot transformed from basement dive to dreamy cocktail bar. If you remember the old dive bar that once lived where Sous Terre now exists, forget everything you know. Crawford Hospitality—chef Scott Crawford's hospitality group that now includes Crawford and Son, Jolie, Brodeto, Crawford Brothers Steakhouse—has transformed it into a subterranean lounge with warm oak, leathered stone, and just the right amount of moody lighting. 'We changed the bar from an underground dive lounge to an understated, dimly lit cocktail-focused lounge by adding warm oak, leathered stone and ambient lighting,' says chef Scott Crawford. 'In addition, we outfitted the bar entirely with Perlick equipment.' It feels like a secret, but not a pretentious one—just a fun, grown-up clubhouse for people who appreciate a well-made drink. Sous Terre. And that's where Jordan Joseph comes in. He's the beverage director of Crawford Hospitality and the kind of guy who obsesses over cocktails the way Crawford obsesses over food. 'I love the feeling of everything down here, especially the lighting. It's darker and moodier than most bars in the city. It's very cozy,' says Joseph. 'You can forget about what time it is and kind of take your mind off of the day-to-day. It's all about the people that come in here and the staff that work here—I believe some of the best people in the world are all a part of this bar.' The cocktail menu is a love letter to the classics—negronis, highballs, sours—but always with an elevated twist. 'Simple cocktails that have great ingredients, and few of them,' says Joseph. 'We take classics seriously and rotate them through each menu change,' like the Champs Elysees, a cocktail from the 1920's. 'It's essentially a Sidecar with Chartreuse and Angostura bitters,' notes Joseph. 'I love this drink. It's old school, made with classic and timeless ingredients, that will never be out of style.' Jordan Joseph at Sous Terre. Spring is gin season in Jordan's world. 'Gin and tonics are my personal favorite cocktail. It's one I drink while off work, truly relaxing around home. This is all about simple pleasure. Grab a bottle of Mahón, Monkey 47, or Nikka Coffey Gin—each of these has its own 'spring' occasion. Keep your gin in the freezer, grab a large chilled glass, add 4 oz or so of gin, a squeeze of lime, quality bottled tonic and plenty of ice. Garnish with a twist of lemon, cucumber, or nothing at all (my preference) and start up the grill.' But if you want to try something unique order the Tom Yum Sour. It's a cocktail that tastes like a trip to Thailand—think coconut-Thai chile-washed Toki whiskey, lemongrass-miso, lime leaf, lemon, and egg white. 'It's Sous Terre's version of a very refreshing, chilled Tom Yum soup in whiskey sour form,' says Joseph. 'Between infusing oils, coconut washing, preparing and weighing out all the ingredients in the stock that's cooked, it's quite labor intensive but very rewarding.' While there's a lot going on it still falls into Joseph's less is more approach with 3-4 ingredients. 'There's a lot to talk about in regards to preparing it, come try one we'll tell you all about it.' Sous Terre. Whatever happens in the subterranean world of Sous Terre, don't leave without a Ramos Gin Fizz. It's one of the only places you'll find a dialed-in version in the Triangle—and Jordan's version is like drinking a delicious cloud souffle. 'We've gained an 'if you know you know' following around our Ramos Gin Fizz since opening,' he says. Note that I'm definitely one of those RFG cult fans, see here. This summer we'll have fun working some of our favorite local produce, such as strawberry, peach and blueberry, into our fizzes. Our bar team takes this drink seriously. It should be worth the wait!' Sous Terre. I had to get Jordan's take on what to drink and when, all subjective, of course: Jenn Rice: What's your favorite pre-dinner cocktail?Jordan Joseph: Scotch Highball. JR: What's your favorite after-dinner drink?JJ: Vieux Carre. JR: What's your go-to low ABV cocktail?JJ: Braulio Amaro and Tonic. JR: What do you recommend for no ABV?JJ: Cold-brewed, milky Oolong tea. JR: What shots are the cool kids shooting these days? JJ: I'm out of the loop here, for me and our team it's usually green Chartreuse from the freezer. Whatever you do, don't forget the key!
