Chhattisgarh encounter: Woman Maoist gunned down by security forces; weapon seized
NEW DELHI: A woman Maoist was killed in a gunfight with security forces in Chhattisgarh's Kanker district on Friday morning, police said. The gunfight occurred on a forested hill in the Chhotebethiya police station area during an anti-Naxal operation by the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Border Security Force (BSF). Kanker Superintendent of Police Indira Kalyan Elesela said, 'The body of a woman Naxalite along with a weapon has been recovered from the encounter site so far, while the intermittent exchange of fire is still underway in the area.' The joint operation began in the forest between Amatola and Kalpar villages after security teams received intelligence about Maoist presence across the Kotri river. Police have confirmed that the operation is still in progress.

With this, 213 Maoists have been killed in the state's Bastar region since January, officials said. Police said that a gunfight broke out in a forested hill, within the jurisdiction of the Chhotebethiya police station, when a joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Border Security Force (BSF) was out on an anti-Naxal operation. The police said that the operation was launched between Amatola and Kalpar villages based on inputs about the presence of the members of banned Maoist outfits on the other side of the Kotri river. After the firing stopped, the body of a Naxalite woman, along with a weapon, was recovered from the site of the encounter. 'The operation is still underway,' the police statement added.
