
Chhattisgarh encounter: Woman Maoist gunned down by security forces; weapon seized
NEW DELHI: A woman Maoist was killed in a gunfight with security forces in Chhattisgarh's Kanker district on Friday morning, police said.
The gunfight occurred on a forested hill in the Chhotebethiya police station area during an anti-Naxal operation by the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Border Security Force (BSF).
Kanker Superintendent of Police Indira Kalyan Elesela said, 'The body of a woman Naxalite along with a weapon has been recovered from the encounter site so far, while the intermittent exchange of fire is still underway in the area.'
The joint operation began in the forest between Amatola and Kalpar villages after security teams received intelligence about Maoist presence across the Kotri river.
Police have confirmed that the operation is still in progress.

Cop seeking ‘pending bribe' from former bootlegger held
Ahmedabad: A constable posted at the Khedbrahma police station in Sabarkantha district was caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths while accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a former bootlegger in a case linked to release of vehicles seized during a liquor raid. The accused, Vikas Patel, an unarmed police constable, was arrested on Thursday. According to the ACB, the complainant, a former bootlegger who claimed to have quit the liquor business in Nov 2024, has alleged that he was was being harassed for 'pending bribe' by Patel. The issue escalated after the complainant and his two associates were detained by the Sabarkantha special operations group (SOG) on May 17, and their three scooters were confiscated. Despite paying fines in court, they were unable to retrieve their vehicles. Upon visiting the police station, they were informed that Patel had the keys and registration documents and was unwilling to return them allegedly without a bribe. Patel allegedly demanded Rs 1.65 lakh but later agreed to release the scooters for Rs 1 lakh. The full amount was recovered from his possession. The operation was carried out by ACB officers D B Mehta and S N Barot of field unit-3, Ahmedabad, under Barot's supervision.

Human trafficker arrested in Tripura's Sepahijala district
A human trafficker was arrested at Dudhpukur under Kalamchoura police station in Sepahijala district today. The arrested person was identified as Sharif Miah, resident of Dudhpukur. He was arrested during a joint raid conducted by Agartala Government Railway police, local police and Border Security Force. 'He was wanted in a case. We conducted raid at his house many times, but he was absconding. We came to know that he is currently at his home and conducted a joint operation to arrest him. We produced him to the court today and sought police remand for him', said officer in-charge of Agartala Government Railway Police Station Tapas Das. In the preliminary interrogation, he confessed his involvement in the case, however, police are investigating to find out whether he had any involvement in other cases, the police official added. The trafficker, resident of Chanipur in West Tripura district was arrested during joint operation conducted by Agartala Government Railway police, Railway Protection Force (RPF) , Border Security Force (BSF), local police station and other sister agencies. A series of arrests of Bangladeshi and Rohingya persons have come in different parts of Tripura, especially at Agartala Railway Station. As per a report of the Tripura Police, 816 Bangladeshi nationals, 79 Rohingya persons and two Nigerians were arrested from January 1, 2024 till February 28 this year. Tripura CM Dr. Manik Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, recently informed that 2815 Bangladeshi nationals were arrested for illegally crossing the Indo-Bangla border into Tripura from 2022 to October 31, 2024, out of which 1746 have been pushed back to their country of origin and 1069 others are housed in jail custody, temporary detention centers, shelter homes or are out on bail. Tripura shares 856 km of international border with Bangladesh, including land based and riverine border, much of which is covered with barbed wire fence except a few patches which are still unfenced due to local disputes.

UK police arrest men on suspicion of assault near Iran's London embassy
British police arrested eight men on Friday, including seven on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, following reports of an altercation involving pro and anti-Iranian protesters at a location close to the Iranian embassy in London. London's Metropolitan Police said a man had been taken into custody after he was arrested on suspicion of breaching conditions temporarily banning protest gatherings in the area until Sunday. 'Seven other men remain in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm,' the police said in a statement. Local media reported the arrests took place at a protest against the Iranian leadership. Police did not link the arrests to the Iranian embassy, but said they took place on Prince's Gate in London, which is where the embassy is located. 'Two men were treated for injuries at the scene and have been taken to hospital for further treatment by the London Ambulance Service,' the police said in an earlier statement. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, the police said in an update. 'Police have cordoned off the area while initial investigations take place.'
