Cowboys would be wise to pass on bringing $191 million future Hall of Famer back to Texas
Cowboys would be wise to pass on bringing $191 million future Hall of Famer back to Texas Future Hall of Famer Von Miller, 36, is a man without a team. The Super Bowl winning, former All-Pro defensive end has made a career chasing quarterbacks and with DeMarcus Lawrence now gone from Dallas, some have suggested Miller could be the needed replacement. Former Cowboys writer and current NFL analyst David Helman wisely put that idea to bed. Worthwhile news can be hard to come by at this time of year so sometimes analysts need to dig pretty deep to find interesting 'what ifs' to talk about. Miller, who has made over $191 million across his storied career, probably wouldn't be as fruitful in Dallas as he would elsewhere, despite his DeSoto, TX roots. Not only is Miller beginning to slow down, but the Cowboys have the defensive end position largely covered. Dallas signed Dante Fowler to a $6 million deal early in free agency to pick up the slack and they also welcome back fourth-year player Sam Williams after missing 2024 with an ACL tear. As if those two aren't enough, the Cowboys also have a pair of second-round picks, Marshawn Kneeland and Donovan Ezeiruaku, to round out a pretty impressive rotation. And did I mention that guy Micah Parsons? The Cowboys have some needs on their defense and options in free agency to consider. Cornerback and defensive tackle look particularly problematic but defensive end is not a comparable concern. Adding a veteran like Miller would only stand in the way of the development of Williams, Kneeland and Ezeiruaku. Perhaps if Fowler wasn't signed and option like Miller would make sense but the ideal looks redundant in these current circumstances. The issue at hand isn't a debate about a single player, but rather a point about how not all additions are good additions. Just because someone has name recognition doesn't mean he's an upgrade and just because someone might be a slight upgrade doesn't mean he's helpful for the position group long-term. Cowboys Headlines: Offense primed for breakout; stadium naming snafu; eyeing Von Miller?
Cowboys Headlines: Offense primed for breakout; stadium naming snafu; eyeing Von Miller? The Cowboys offense will be looking to bounce back in a big way in 2025, and one outlet says they're in a good position to actually do it. In this news roundup, we'll look at a few of the players who will have a large role in that turnaround effort: from the wide receiver who could be either the best move of the offseason or the biggest risk (or maybe both), the second-year lineman who knows he needs to step it up, and the tight end who wants to prove last year was a fluke. Defensively, we'll look at a recent rumbling that says the Cowboys should bring home a Texas favorite who's sitting in free agency, and we'll see which injured defender has been hitting the gym hard during his rehab. All that, plus which prospects the Cowboys may try to hide during the preseason., which ones may be taking their final snaps with the team this year, and who is fighting over the name of AT&T Stadium? Raiders, Bears, Jaguars among 6 offenses ready for a breakout :: The Athletic Link The Cowboys offense is among those primed to take a quantum leap this season. If teams double CeeDee Lamb as they did last year, George Pickens can punish them deep and Jake Ferguson can eat underneath. The key to all of it may be Tyler Guyton. Along with Tyler Smith and rookie Tyler Booker, the O-line has the potential to be a real strength and help turn the entire unit around. Cowboys' trade for George Pickens ranks among favorite, riskiest NFL offseason moves :: Cowboys Wire Link An unnamed coach in the NFC East believes the Cowboys' acquisition of Pickens should open things up for Lamb and the rest of the team's playmakers. One AFC staffer agrees and thinks Pickens has landed in a situation where he can truly shine. But there is risk: he had maturity issues that contributed to his dismissal by the Steelers. Dallas Cowboys warned to steer clear of future Hall of Fame defender :: Link Von Miller has been linked to Dallas before, and he's destined for Canton. But the Cowboys shouldn't make a move to sign the free agent now. With Dante Fowler and rookie Donovan Ezeiruaku manning the edge opposite Micah Parsons, the team has done plenty to address the position. Besides, Miller is 36 now and hasn't been the same since an ACL injury in late 2022. Cowboys second-round pick showed up to minicamp looking like a different player :: The Landry Hat Link Sam Williams is just now returning to individual drills without a knee brace as he continues to rehab the ACL tear he suffered last summer. But he's definitely been hitting the gym and packing muscle on his upper body. 'Biceps look huge,' Coach Schottenheimer said last week. 'He's doing great ... Again, no timetable, but you guys see him moving and the size and the speed and the athleticism." The added bulk should help Williams immensely in run defense. Cowboys former first-round pick has to improve to avoid dreaded bust label :: Cowboys Wire Link Tyler Guyton admits he didn't play up to expectations last year. "I want to be the guy that can be depended on," Guyton said. "I'm coming with a different attitude this year to become a better player." The left tackle job is still his to lose, but the leash may be shorter in his second year... with capable backups ready to step in. After down year, Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson's confidence remains high :: Fort Worth Star-Telegram Link The knee sprain Ferguson sustained in Week 1 forced him to miss two games. A concussion two months later resulted in more no-shows. Add in a quarterback change, and it was a rough season for the tight end. Brian Schottenheimer called it "a fluke," but Ferguson says he's put in the work this offseason to make sure there's no repeat in his third year. 7 Dallas Cowboys starters who might play their last down of football for the team in 2025, and how likely they are to return :: A to Z Sports Link George Pickens and Kaiir Elam are in the same boat: if they perform really well, the Cowboys likely won't be able to afford to bring them back in 2026. Donovan Wilson will be 31 by then and could be aging out of his roster spot. Dante Fowler is getting up there, too. Even guys like Jack Sanborn, Jake Ferguson, and DaRon Bland may or may not be long-term Cowboys. 3 young players Cowboys may try to hide during preseason game :: Cowboys Wire Link There can be some gamesmanship during the preseason, with teams often holding back a young player who has upside but isn't ready quite yet. The Cowboys may try to "hide" prospects they want to stash on the practice squad, like running back Phil Mafah, tight end Rivaldo Fairweather, and defensive back Alijah Clark. A round of golf with the Cowboys' specialists: How their bond goes beyond football :: The Mothership Link Brandon Aubrey, Bryan Anger, and Trent Sieg played the PGA Frisco course Tuesday ahead of the KMPG Women's PGA Championship, teamed with Japanese LPGA rookie Chisato Iwai. But the trio also talked about their three years together as the Dallas special teams battery. They believe new coordinator Nick Sorensen will bring a fresh perspective to their phase of the game. Texas country superstar tapped to judge Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader auditions :: Link The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders are getting some Grammy-award winning help in Season 2 of America's Sweethearts. Kacey Musgraves has performed with the squad multiple times over the years; now she'll serve as celebrity judge for the Netlfix docuseries. The new season will be available June 18. City of Arlington says it wants recognition for 2026 FIFA World Cup, doesn't want to rename AT&T Stadium :: CBS News Link The U.S. stadiums hosting FIFA World Cup games in 2026 won't be allowed to use their corporate-sponsor names for those matches. But FIFA's plan to refer to the Cowboys' home venue as "Dallas Stadium" is rankling those who live in Arlington, the actual location of the facility. "We are happy to share the name, but we believe that it should be called Arlington Dallas Stadium," said Mayor Jim Ross. Lions Urged to Pursue Former Bills Edge Von Miller
Lions Urged to Pursue Former Bills Edge Von Miller originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Lions' roster took a big hit today. All-Pro center Frank Ragnow announced he is retiring, which leaves them with another position where they need to find a way to replace a talented starter. Advertisement With that in mind, they may feel a bit more urgency to make a move at one of the other positions where they are still looking to replace a former All-Pro who started for the team in 2024. Detroit Lions general manager Brad HolmesKimberly P. Mitchell / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images The Draft Network's Justin Melo has an idea for just such a move that would give the Lions a replacement for Za'Darius Smith. Melo recently named the Lions as a team who should sign former Buffalo Bills edge Von Miller. It seems this idea may be gaining some popularity as CBS Sports' John Breech also recently named the Lions as a potential landing spot for the former Super Bowl MVP. Miller is no longer the elite defender that anchored a Super Bowl-winning Broncos defense, but he was still a pretty solid piece for the Bills this past season. Advertisement He only played 279 snaps in 13 games, but was still able to produce six sacks and 32 total pressures in 2024 according to Pro Football Focus. It was a big bounce back for Miller after he failed to record a sack in 12 games during the 2023 season. He's not the best option out there as he is now 36 years old and has missed 15 games in the last three seasons. He also plays limited snaps even when available. However, he could work as a pass rush specialist for them to give the team another option to get pressure on opposing QBs in obvious passing situations. The Lions need to do something to improve in this area as they prepare to face the NFL's toughest schedule in 2025. Advertisement If the price is right, Miller could make sense as an option to give them that boost. 10 best remaining NFL free agents the Eagles could target after June 1
10 best remaining NFL free agents the Eagles could target after June 1 Post-June 1 signings don't affect the compensatory pick formula, meaning the Eagles can wait and sign free agents later this summer to build more draft capital for the next season. The Eagles have undergone significant changes on both sides of the football field, involving player personnel and a retooled coaching staff. The first wave of free agency saw Josh Sweat (Cardinals), Milton Williams (Patriots), Kenneth Gainwell (Steelers), Mekhi Becton (Chargers), and Oren Burks (Bengals) all depart. Still, they rebounded to make several key signings, including A.J. Dillon (RB), Joshua Uche (LB), Adoree' Jackson (CB), Charley Hughlett (LS), Patrick Johnson (LB), Matt Pryor (OL), and Avery Williams (KR/PR). The Eagles and GM Howie Roseman are big on compensatory picks, and could choose to wait until after June 1 to add more talent to the roster. Post-June 1 signings don't affect the compensatory pick formula, meaning Philadelphia can wait and sign free agents later this summer to build more draft capital for the next season. With June 1 just days away, we're looking at ten free agents the Eagles could sign. Brandon Scherff, G Another potential addition for depth, the veteran offensive guard had a pass block win rate of 93.8% last year, ranked 14th among guards, according to ESPN. Justin Simmons, S Simmons signed with Atlanta last offseason following eight years in Denver. Last season, Simmons recorded two interceptions, seven passes defended, and 62 total tackles in 16 games played in 2024, with his PFF grade ranking 113th out of 170 safeties. Julian Blackmon, S Blackmon had three interceptions in 2024 and seven over the past two seasons. Keenan Allen, WR Roster building in the NFL isn't Madden 25, but if the Eagles wanted to ensure that the pass catchers behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are dependable, they could look to sign the former Chargers and Bears star on a team-friendly deal. Jahan Dotson is the third wide receiver, and Philadelphia has Johnny Wilson and Ainias Smith working to develop. Still, Allen had 70 receptions for 774 yards and seven touchdowns (15 games) last season. Rasul Douglas, CB The 29-year-old former Eagles cornerback didn't record an interception over 15 games and allowed a career-worst 122.0 passer rating when targeted last season. His PFF grade ranked 132nd out of 223 cornerbacks. In 2023, Douglas had five interceptions with a 73.1 passer rating allowed. David Andrews, C If the Eagles are uncertain about the right guard spot, Philadelphia could move Cam Jurgens and sign former Patriots center David Andrews. After going undrafted in 2015, Andrews signed with the Patriots, made 121 starts over nine seasons, and won two Super Bowls. Von Miller, OLB Every team needs a closer at edge rusher, and if the Eagles really wanted to get creative, they could make a run at Von Miller. The eight-time Pro Bowler had six sacks, seven tackles for loss, eight QB hits, and 17 total tackles in 13 games last season. Kyzir White, LB A former Eagles linebacker familiar with the culture, White started all 17 games in his second season with the Arizona Cardinals, making 137 total tackles, one interception, 2.5 sacks, nine tackles for loss, and eight QB hits. White is a liability against the pass, and Vic Fangio would have to get creative with his usage. Jedrick Wills Jr., OT Wills could be in line for a position switch like Mekhi Becton, and he's still a solid pass blocker who has a career pass block win rate of 92.0%. Mike Hilton, cornerback Hilton has a natural feel for playing in space as a coverage defender, and in the slot, he offers the aggressive mentality to tackle and blitz on the edges.
