Keniogan folks hopeful of 24-hour power supply

Published on: Tuesday, June 17, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 17, 2025 By: Abbey Junior Text Size: Sabah Electricity personnel inspecting the upgraded generator facility at the Pulau Keniogan power station, which now supplies electricity to the island for up to 18 hours daily as part of efforts to achieve 24-hour coverage. BELURAN: Villagers on Pulau Keniogan are one step closer to enjoying 24-hour electricity, as Sabah Electricity ramps up efforts to improve power supply on the remote island. The community, made up of some 200 households, currently receives electricity for 18 hours a day — an upgrade from the previous 12-hour schedule — following the installation of a new, more efficient diesel generator. Advertisement Sabah Electricity Chief Operating Officer Ir. Ts. Mohd Yusmanizam Mohd Yusof said the move was part of the utility's commitment to ensure equitable access to electricity for all, including rural and island communities. 'We've sent a new, more efficient generator to Pulau Keniogan to ensure a more dependable power supply,' he said. 'We are working towards 24-hour electricity. Our goal is to make sure that every Sabahan gets the best service and electricity supply possible.' Pulau Keniogan, located off the coast of Sandakan and accessible only by boat, is home to a Bajau-majority fishing community that has long depended on candlelight, kerosene lamps and small private generators to get through the night. Local development officer (UPPM) Lokman Madlis said the longer electricity hours had already improved daily life for many residents. 'Alhamdulillah, it now feels like we're not so isolated anymore,' he said. 'People here have freezers, some even have air-conditioning and Astro. With longer electricity hours, we can store our catch properly and send it to the mainland for sale the next day. This really helps our income, especially for those who depend entirely on fishing.' Community representative Kamarzaman Marof echoed similar sentiments, saying full-day electricity is not just a convenience but a necessity. 'We really need 24-hour supply because ice is crucial for the fishermen,' he said. 'Without it, it's hard to keep our catch fresh. Some of us go out to sea in the morning and only return late in the day. If the ice melts or there's not enough, the fish will spoil and we lose money.' He pointed out that many elderly villagers rely on fans or cooling appliances due to the heat, adding that 24-hour power would improve their comfort and health. Sabah Electricity is currently working with the Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW) to complete a solar hybrid project on the island. Once completed, it is expected to provide long-term, clean and reliable energy to the village. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Residents fed up with Nosoob Baru road conditions

Published on: Wednesday, May 28, 2025 Published on: Wed, May 28, 2025 Text Size: PENAMPANG: After more than a year of enduring hazardous road conditions, residents of Kampung Nosoob Baru are demanding urgent action from local authorities. They are citing safety concerns, property damage, and a complete lack of accountability. Michelle Chin Ling Ling, Parti Impian Sabah Treasurer and Kapayan Division Chief, criticised the inaction by the Unit Pemimpin Pembangunan Masyarakat (UPPM). Advertisement 'The residents of Kg Nosoob Baru have been enduring severely damaged road conditions for over a year. "Despite multiple reports submitted to UPPM, there has been no concrete action taken. 'The only response received so far has been waiting for funds. This ongoing delay has caused daily inconvenience and concern for the villagers," she said. Chin added that Parti Impian Sabah is calling on the public to pressure on the UPPM through social media and other platforms to push for urgent repairs. 'Our community deserves safe and accessible roads. We cannot afford to wait any longer," she stressed. Among the frustrated residents is Eric Constantine, who suffered a tire blowout after hitting one of the many potholes in the village. 'I hit a pothole in my village and my tire got completely torn. 'We've already informed the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), and we're still waiting for the PPM to take any action. "This road has been full of holes for so long, and the response has been incredibly slow. We keep reporting it and nothing gets done.' He expressed concern over reports that the area's appointed PPM officer had resigned after joining an independent political party. 'The people don't care if the PPM quit or switched parties, just get someone who can actually do the job. "This is about road safety, not politics. What if a motorcyclist hits a pothole and gets seriously injured or worse? 'And where do I go to claim compensation for my damaged tire?' he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? GRS yet to decide on PH partnership for Sabah polls

Mohamed Razali (third left) presenting a JKKK appointment letter during the event, while Abqaree (second left) looks on. KOTA KINABALU (May 25): Speculations that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) will only partner with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the coming state elections remain a speculation, said GRS executive secretary Datuk Mohamed Razali Mohamed Razi. Mohamed Razali said the word speculation in terms of politics means that anything is possible, as politics itself is dynamic, so for now, GRS has not made any decision on the matter. However, he stressed that at the end of the day, whatever decision they make will be based on the interests of the rakyat. 'So, we leave it to the top leadership to decide, but I reiterate that our objective is to do what's best for the people of Sabah. 'Because GRS does not act exclusively, but inclusively. We have to recognise and appreciate our friends who are not in Sabah. 'To me, that is very important,' he told reporters after the ceremony to hand over Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) appointment letters for the Darau state constituency at Kampung Warisan here today. Meanwhile, Mohamed Razali called for the GRS-led state government to be maintained to ensure political stability as well as the continuity of its various initiatives in addressing longstanding issues such as water, roads and electricity. He did not deny that these issues are prevalent in the Sepanggar area, but assured that the government has been taking action. Mohamed Razali, who is also Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Darau chief, said the government has a direction and has done many things to tackle these problems through documented short and long-term plans, but such issues require time to resolve. 'Hence, we need stability to keep the momentum. And continuity, that is very important. 'If we keep changing governments, the next administration will come in with new policies, and it is the rakyat who will be affected,' he said. Meanwhile, Mohamed Razali said around 500 people had attended the programme at Darau, which was held in conjunction with the 'Jelajah Darau D'Hati' roadshow, jointly organised with the Darau Community Development Leaders Unit (UPPM). He said his team will be travelling from village to village during the roadshow to bring various services to the rakyat, in collaboration with government agencies such as the State Welfare Department and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living. The National Registration Department is also involved in the programme to assist in settling documentation issues faced by the villagers, he said. Other activities held during the Sunday programme include a Rahmah Sale as well as a Mobile Legends e-sports competition, as he highlighted the need to involve the youth in community events. Also present was UPPM Darau head Abqaree Fawwaz Abekan.
