Keniogan folks hopeful of 24-hour power supply

BELURAN: Villagers on Pulau Keniogan are one step closer to enjoying 24-hour electricity, as Sabah Electricity ramps up efforts to improve power supply on the remote island. The community, made up of some 200 households, currently receives electricity for 18 hours a day — an upgrade from the previous 12-hour schedule — following the installation of a new, more efficient diesel generator.

Mohd Yusmanizam Mohd Yusof said the move was part of the utility's commitment to ensure equitable access to electricity for all, including rural and island communities. 'We've sent a new, more efficient generator to Pulau Keniogan to ensure a more dependable power supply,' he said. 'We are working towards 24-hour electricity. Our goal is to make sure that every Sabahan gets the best service and electricity supply possible.' Pulau Keniogan, located off the coast of Sandakan and accessible only by boat, is home to a Bajau-majority fishing community that has long depended on candlelight, kerosene lamps and small private generators to get through the night. Local development officer (UPPM) Lokman Madlis said the longer electricity hours had already improved daily life for many residents. 'Alhamdulillah, it now feels like we're not so isolated anymore,' he said. 'People here have freezers, some even have air-conditioning and Astro. With longer electricity hours, we can store our catch properly and send it to the mainland for sale the next day. This really helps our income, especially for those who depend entirely on fishing.' Community representative Kamarzaman Marof echoed similar sentiments, saying full-day electricity is not just a convenience but a necessity. 'We really need 24-hour supply because ice is crucial for the fishermen,' he said. 'Without it, it's hard to keep our catch fresh. Some of us go out to sea in the morning and only return late in the day. If the ice melts or there's not enough, the fish will spoil and we lose money.' He pointed out that many elderly villagers rely on fans or cooling appliances due to the heat, adding that 24-hour power would improve their comfort and health. Sabah Electricity is currently working with the Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW) to complete a solar hybrid project on the island. Speaking at the finance ministry's monthly assembly in Putrajaya, Anwar said continuous efforts had been made since 2022 to bring down the country's fiscal deficit from 5.5% to the latest projection of 3.8% this year. Anwar, who is also finance minister, added that investor confidence would translate to investments, which could help raise the national revenue, provide job opportunities, and contribute to the nation's overall development. Putrajaya brought the deficit down from 5.5% in 2022 to 5% in 2023, and 4.1% last year. The Treasury had said this would slow the growth of the national debt with a drop in new government borrowings each year, from nearly RM100 billion in 2022 to RM92.6 billion in 2023, and around RM77 billion last year. Advertisement Anwar also dismissed claims that the government's debt reduction efforts had compromised public welfare, saying the approach should be seen as a long-term strategy. 'Since we took over, the debt has been reduced by RM20 billion. 'It's like someone inheriting a company after his father passes away. The company owes RM50,000. No more imported food at official events, Anwar tells civil service

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has directed all government departments to cease using imported goods, particularly food, at official events, in a bid to promote local products. Speaking at the finance ministry's monthly assembly, Anwar said that using local produce would not only bolster the local economy but would also open wider opportunities for local farmers to market their goods. Advertisement 'If every government department follows this directive, it will create more opportunities for our farmers to supply local food ingredients,' he said. The prime minister also cited the example of neighbouring countries whom he said were committed to using local food products at all official functions. 'In Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand, I've never been served imported food at any government-hosted official event. It's automatic for them to ensure that only local food is served,' he said. Anwar also criticised the preference by some parties for imported food products despite the government's clear stance. No reason for price hike as refined sugar remains exempt from SST, Finance Ministry tells MSM

The MOF said in a statement today that raw sugar used in the production of refined sugar would be subject to a five per cent sales tax. Advertisement 'However, as previously announced, manufacturers such as MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd are eligible to apply for tax exemption on their raw materials and inputs. 'Hence, there is no reason for any increase in the price of refined sugar — especially since sugar refiners like MSM continue to receive monthly incentives from the government to ensure supply and price stability,' the MOF said. The MOF said this to clarify a statement issued by MSM regarding the impact of the sales tax revision on raw sugar. The ministry said the Madani Government has taken a targeted approach by not imposing taxes on essential goods such as sugar, salt, chicken, eggs, meat, fish, vegetables, cooking oil and rice. The MOF said sugar refiners and manufacturers in Malaysia can apply to the Royal Malaysian Customs Department for tax exemptions as provided for under Item 1, Column (2), Schedule B of the Sales Tax (Persons Exempt from Payment of Tax) Order. Yesterday, it was reported that national refined sugar producer MSM is reviewing the five per cent extension of SST involving raw sugar and is seeking further clarification from the government to monitor the impact on the prices of regulated goods. According to the MSM group chief executive officer, the retail price of sugar in Malaysia has been capped at RM2.85 per kilogramme since 2011, despite the global raw sugar price increasing in recent years. He said that if the tax was imposed on raw sugar, the country's refined sugar producers could pass on the cost to the industry.
