Wayward Teens Find Solace in Horse Country During Sundance Award-Winning ‘East of Wall' Trailer
Kate Beecroft makes her directorial debut with the Sundance Audience Award-winning Western 'East of Wall,' which blends genre tropes with docu-fiction storytelling. It was Beecroft's investigative instinct and deftness for storytelling that led her to encounter Tabatha, a real-life rancher on whose own life 'East of Wall' is based. Tabatha stars as a fictionalized version of herself in the feature set in South Dakota. The official synopsis teases that 'East of Wall' is an 'authentic portrait of female resilience in the 'New West' inspired and played by the women and girls who live it. Set in the Badlands of South Dakota, Tabatha, a young, rebellious rancher, who rescues and resells horses, must make hard decisions to deal with her fractured family, financial uncertainty, and unresolved grief, all while providing refuge for a group of wayward neighborhood teens.' More from IndieWire Zoe Saldaña Says Her 'Emilia Pérez' Oscar Is 'Trans': The Statue 'Goes by They/Them' Two Lost Exploitation Films from Trash-Cult Favorite Andy Milligan Will 'Re-Premiere' at Tribeca Tabatha Zimiga and her daughter Porshia Zimiga are joined by actors Scoot McNairy and Jennifer Ehle for the film. Beecroft told IndieWire that she first realized Tabatha's story belonged on the screen after driving through her town in 2019 with DP Austin Shelton. Beecroft spent the next five years living at Tabatha's ranch for three weeks every month. 'Really, what I was doing was just talking to them all the time, and having them tell me their stories,' Beecroft said of creating the story around Tabatha and her family. 'So, in a way, it was kind of like an audition. If you can tell me a story and keep me into that story, then you have something that could be held on screen. And they all did.' Beecroft added of structuring the film to include parts of the Zimiga's life, 'When it is somewhat fiction, they don't feel so naked. I don't want to put these kids in a position where they feel naked. It just wasn't fair, but it also wasn't fair for their artistry.' 'East of Wall' is screening as a Spotlight feature at Tribeca Festival and also will screen at the 2025 Bentonville Film Festival. The film is produced by Beecroft, Lila Yacoub, Melanie Ramsayer, and Shannon Moss, with Scott Frank, Al Engemann, Naia Cucukov, Peter Richards, Randy Wooten, Caitlin Gold, Ryan Hawkins, John D. Martin, and Staci Hartman executive producing. 'I am a no name director, no name DP, no name cast. I had no one attached to it,' Beecroft said of getting 'East of Wall' made. 'The only thing I could do, especially as a female filmmaker, especially with no name, was make the best pitch trailer possible, so I can be like, 'Look what me and my DP can do without any crew, without any money. If you give us money, imagine what we could do with more.'' Sony Pictures Classics will release 'East of Wall' in theaters on Friday, August 15. Check out the trailer and poster below. Pedro Almodóvar's Next Movie ‘Bitter Christmas' Set for Spanish Theaters and Streamer Movistar Plus+
Pedro Almodóvar has found his next project. The auteur is now at work on 'Bitter Christmas' for Spanish streaming platform Movistar Plus+. Almodóvar also collaborated with the platform on his English-language feature debut, 'The Room Next Door.' 'Bitter Christmas,' or 'Amarga Navidad,' stars a slew of Almodóvar newcomers and staples, including Bárbara Lennie ('Petra'), Leonardo Sbaraglia ('Pain and Glory'), Aitana Sánchez-Gijón ('Parallel Mothers'), Victoria Luengo ('The Room Next Door'), Patrick Criado ('Riot Police'), Milena Smit ('Parallel Mothers'), and Quim Gutiérrez ('Darkbluealmostblack'). The film will be released in Spanish theaters in 2026, with Warner Bros. Pictures Spain distributing. It will then debut exclusively on the Movistar Plus+ platform. 'Eddington' Trailer: Ari Aster's Western of Pandemic Paranoia Hits Theaters After Dividing Cannes IndieWire has reached out to Almodóvar's representatives for details about a possible U.S. release, though it can be assumed Sony Pictures Classics will release the film in North America, as it has all of Almodóvar's recent outings. We're told that festival play and a U.S. release will take place before the Movistar+ premiere. 'Bitter Christmas' centers on advertising director Elsa, now mourning the loss of her mother over a December holiday weekend. The official synopsis, as shared by Variety, reads: 'She throws herself into work as a form of escape, not realizing she's denying herself the time to grieve. Her relentless pace is interrupted when a panic attack forces her to take a break. Her partner, Bonifacio, becomes her anchor in this moment of crisis. Elsa decides to travel to the island of Lanzarote with her friend Patricia, who is also looking to get away from Madrid, while Bonifacio stays behind in the city. The story of these three characters, and several others, runs parallel to that of screenwriter and film director Raúl Durán, intertwining fiction and reality. 'Bitter Christmas' explores how life and fiction are inseparably linked, sometimes painfully so.' The project is currently filming in Madrid and Lanzarote. Almodóvar and his brother, Agustín Almodóvar, produce through their El Deseo banner in collaboration with Movistar Plus+. Almodóvar won the 2024 Venice Film Festival Golden Lion for 'The Room Next Door,' distributed stateside by Sony Pictures Classics. 'I was very concerned about the English,' Almodóvar told IndieWire about his first film in English. 'We wanted an English that should sound American. My films have never been naturalistic. I have never aspired to the mumbling or babbling or pausing or some of those things that happen in regular language. I like my language to be concentrated and precise. In Spanish, it has worked well.' Fans can't wait for this wild rom-com about BDSM and ‘toxic situationships'
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Sony Pictures Classics has just dropped the first trailer for Oh, Hi!, and if the internet is any indication, fans are already obsessed. The chaotic, funny, and unexpectedly tender romantic comedy stars Molly Gordon and Logan Lerman as Iris and Isaac. The film, directed by Sophie Brooks (The Boy Downstairs), follows Iris and Isaac on what should be a dreamy first couples getaway. There's a charming romantic dinner, dancing under fairy lights, and even an experimental foray into BDSM. But things take a sharp left turn when Iris dares to use the word 'couple.' Isaac quickly backpedals, prompting Iris to do something… bold. 'Why would you bring me here? Why would you spend all day acting like my boyfriend!?' she demands, standing over a very handcuffed Isaac. 'You're being kinda crazy right now,' he replies. Spoiler: that does not calm her down. The film co-stars Geraldine Viswanathan, John Reynolds, David Cross, Jimmy Gary Jr., and Polly Draper, rounding out an all-star cast. Since its premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, Oh, Hi! has been building buzz. Kevin Fallon of The Daily Beast's Obsessed called it 'a hilarious comedy' that disrupts rom-com expectations while The Guardian notes '…the film does happen upon a real, and painful, truth of the problems that come from dating without a label.' Many critics have also noted the strength of Molly Gordon's performance, with Variety calling it 'boundless and bouncily unhinged.' It's also struck a chord online, with fans losing their minds over the Lerman-Gordon pairing and the movie's unhinged premise. 'I am so seated for sexy indie Gerald's Game,' tweeted @SeriousMolly. 'Molly Gordon has so much on screen power. She should be in more projects,' added @Haiderjkhan. @_tweetsbyjess declared: 'Girl this seems like a hit to me!! We will be watching.' And perhaps most appropriately, @stylesgala posted: 'Someone is going to have to restrain me when I see oh, hi!' More Trending Gordon, who also co-wrote the story with Brooks, told Vanity Fair the film is about modern dating frustrations and the emotional confusion that comes with them. 'With apps, it's just such a hard time to date in our modern age, and we've had a communication breakdown between sexes,' she said. 'We just wanted to make something that is about how hard it is to just be honest about how you feel about someone.' Catch Oh, Hi! in theaters starting July 25, Bring Your Own Handcuffs (BYOH).
