Tripura government gives jobs to 18 next of kin of victims murdered in political violence

The Tripura Government has started the process of distributing job offers to families whose members were killed in incidents of political violence before the incumbent alliance government came to power in 2018. Jobs were handed to 18 next of kin of the victims, which an official on Sunday (June 22, 2025) described as the first phase of such recruitment. 'A committee was constituted to provide government jobs to persons whose family members were victims of political murders. So far, the panel has received 39 applications, and out of these, 18 persons have been given jobs,' Tripura Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath said at a press conference. 'Several families couldn't even file FIRs with police, and many case records are missing,' he claimed. The BJP-led government in December 2020 announced a scheme to provide jobs to next of kin of those killed in political violence over a period of 46 years with 2018 as the cutoff year. Thereafter, some jobs were disbursed to the affected families, but not blockwise like now. A State Government official said 18 aspirants who were selected from the list recommended by a committee which was earlier set up to identify the victim families. 'The primary consideration for recruitment is based on the financial condition of the families, but all those lost kin would also be considered in the next phases,' the official stated. The apparent policy of the State Government is to support only non-left families who fell prey to violence during previous CPI(M)-led governments. The victims, according to the official assessment, had been connected with the Congress party, as it was the main Opposition party in the state before 2018. CPI(M), now in opposition, alleged that the policy of providing government jobs only to non-left families is 'inhumane', as scores of left supporters were killed in political violence. A party leader pointed to targeted killings of left leaders, workers and supporters during the 'repressive' five-year rule of the Congress-TUJS alliance government from 1988 to 1993. Govt has given jobs to 18 whose kin were political clash victims: Tripura min

Agartala: The BJP-led govt has so far provided permanent jobs to 18 people whose family members have been victims of political violence, state parliamentary affairs minister Ratan Lal Nath on Saturday. Nath said a large number of opposition supporters, during the 35-year regime of the Left Front govt, had been victims of political violence, with most of them being the breadwinners of their families. "Losing their breadwinners, the families landed in distress. Neither justice was ensured nor were they given any assistance from the govt," Nath said. However, after the BJP-IPFT alliance came to power in 2018, the state govt decided to support the families of those who had lost their loved ones to political violence, Nath added. So far, 39 applications have been received, out of which 18 have already been provided jobs, the minister said. The state govt has constituted a panel for scrutiny of applications received for providing employment to family members of those individuals killed in political clashes, he added. The committee, headed by Nath and comprising senior bureaucrats and police officials, examine the applications based on reports from district magistrates and superintendents of police. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo "From 1983 to 2018, several individuals lost their lives due to political clashes. Tripura govt gives jobs to kin of 18 people killed in political violence before 2018

The Tripura government has provided jobs to 18 people whose family members were killed in political violence in the state before 2018, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath said in Agartala on Saturday. The minister said 39 petitions were submitted to the scrutiny committee, and 18 people were offered jobs in various departments. Nath is the chairman of the scrutiny committee, which also comprises the law secretary, secretary of information and cultural affairs, an inspector general of police, and the additional secretary of the home department. 'Another meeting of the committee was held on June 19. We got eight more petitions, and five of the names were recommended. We are reviewing the remaining petitions,' the minister told reporters at the Civil Secretariat. 'We give due respect to democracy. We feel that supporting the family members of those who were killed in political violence is our moral duty. Our government has not shown any discrimination on the basis of political affiliations in this case,' he said. The BJP-led coalition government first came to power in the state in 2018, unseating the erstwhile CPI(M)-led Left Front government which had ruled the state for 25 consecutive years. Criticising the previous government, Nath said, 'Several political murders happened before 2018 during the earlier government's tenure. Murders and political violence are not healthy for democracy. If it happens, it is a failure and embarrassment for shame for the government'. He, however, could not give an exact figure of the political murders that purportedly occurred prior to 2018. 'Petitions received are of cases from different years like 1983, 1987, 1990, 1994, 1995, 1998,1981, 2015, 2016, 2017…,' he said. Nath added that those who wish to apply under the scheme should collect forms from the sub-divisional magistrates' offices. These applications will be assessed by the committee based on inputs shared by district magistrates and superintendents of police. 'If the names are approved by the committee, it will be forwarded to the Finance Department, and based on vacancies in different departments, they will be given jobs,' he added.

Tripura's queen variety pineapples sent to Delhi for global delegates

Agartala: The first consignment of fresh queen variety pineapples from Tripura was dispatched to Delhi on Monday with support from the Bengaluru-based International Competence Centre for Organic Agriculture. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Harvested from an orchard in Badyardighi area of Bishalgarh under Sepahijala district, around 150kg of premium-quality pineapples were flown to Delhi on special request from a private trader. The produce will be served to an international delegation. Hanif Mia, a pineapple farmer cultivating one hectare of land, shared that he has already sold Rs 70,000 worth of produce since the season began a month ago. With technical and financial assistance from Bishalgarh horticulture sub-division officials, local farmers are experiencing renewed optimism in pineapple farming. "Like previous years, we will export Queen variety pineapples to the Middle East, Europe, and East Asian countries, along with major Indian metros, in the coming weeks. In the next phase, Kew variety pineapples will be sold in domestic and international markets. Production has been impressive this year, and demand is notably high," said agriculture and farmers welfare minister Ratan Lal Nath. Apart from pineapples, Tripura has seen a substantial yield of mangoes, jackfruits, and watermelons this season. Markets are witnessing a steady supply of crossbred and high-yielding mango varieties, including Amrapali, Himsagar, Rupali, and Anamika, at relatively affordable prices, the minister added. "The supply of mangoes from West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh has significantly declined this season. Even fruit vendors outside Tripura are preferring locally grown mangoes. Our goal is to establish Tripura as a mango supplier in India within the next two to three years, similar to its reputation for pineapples," he said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Over the past seven years, Tripura's pineapples have gained international recognition, leading to a threefold increase in commercial cultivation driven by rising global demand. Encouraged by this success, farmers have expanded to other crops, with jackfruit and lemon from Tripura being exported to Dubai and London in recent years. Despite the state's potential to produce world-class fruits, farmers have historically struggled with market access. For years, their produce was sold at lower prices in neighbouring Assam or informally traded across the Bangladesh border. Lack of proper market connectivity had once discouraged many farmers, prompting a shift to rubber cultivation. However, since the BJP-led govt assumed office in 2018, significant efforts have been made to promote and market Tripura's horticultural products. Scientists reach out to nearly 2L farmers through Krishi Sankalp drive in Tripura

Agartala: Tripura has achieved remarkable success in the fortnight-long Vikshit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan (VKSA), which concluded on Thursday. Agriculture scientists and extension workers engaged with 1.95 lakh farmers, including 34% women, through 873 meetings held across 956 villages, minister for agriculture and farmers' welfare Ratan Lal Nath said on Friday. Talking to the media, Nath said scientists interacted with farmers and provided tips on increasing crop yields, reducing production costs, adopting natural and climate-resilient farming, improving sustainable marketing, and enhancing processing and value addition of agricultural products. "The success of VKSA in Tripura is the highest recorded in the northeast. The department has identified standout farmers whose success stories serve as inspiration nationwide. Fish cultivators, floriculturists, paddy growers, and vegetable farmers have been earning substantial incomes through agriculture, despite holding impressive degrees. Some have amassed significant wealth through farming," Nath said. He said three districts and 30 blocks in Tripura are now self-sufficient in paddy cultivation. However, the state remains short by 1.5 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of paddy. "For the current Kharif season, we aim to produce at least one lakh MT more than last year. In the next two seasons, Tripura is expected to become self-sufficient in food grain production," he added. Tripura's farmers have been exporting pineapple, scented lemon, lotus, aromatic rice, and spices for the last seven years. The government continues to support them in adopting modern agricultural techniques to improve yields while also promoting organic farming. Additionally, 2.83 lakh farmers have received Rs 843 crore under PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi, while Rs 1,750 crore was disbursed under PM Fasal Bima Yojana.
