Tripura government gives jobs to 18 next of kin of victims murdered in political violence
The Tripura Government has started the process of distributing job offers to families whose members were killed in incidents of political violence before the incumbent alliance government came to power in 2018. Jobs were handed to 18 next of kin of the victims, which an official on Sunday (June 22, 2025) described as the first phase of such recruitment.
'A committee was constituted to provide government jobs to persons whose family members were victims of political murders. So far, the panel has received 39 applications, and out of these, 18 persons have been given jobs,' Tripura Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath said at a press conference.
'Several families couldn't even file FIRs with police, and many case records are missing,' he claimed.
The BJP-led government in December 2020 announced a scheme to provide jobs to next of kin of those killed in political violence over a period of 46 years with 2018 as the cutoff year. Thereafter, some jobs were disbursed to the affected families, but not blockwise like now.
A State Government official said 18 aspirants who were selected from the list recommended by a committee which was earlier set up to identify the victim families. 'The primary consideration for recruitment is based on the financial condition of the families, but all those lost kin would also be considered in the next phases,' the official stated.
The apparent policy of the State Government is to support only non-left families who fell prey to violence during previous CPI(M)-led governments. The victims, according to the official assessment, had been connected with the Congress party, as it was the main Opposition party in the state before 2018.
CPI(M), now in opposition, alleged that the policy of providing government jobs only to non-left families is 'inhumane', as scores of left supporters were killed in political violence. A party leader pointed to targeted killings of left leaders, workers and supporters during the 'repressive' five-year rule of the Congress-TUJS alliance government from 1988 to 1993.

Teenager killed by ‘crude bomb hurled during TMC victory rally' in Kaliganj
A 13-year-old girl was killed in an explosion in West Bengal's Kaliganj on Monday, allegedly after a crude bomb was hurled during a Trinamool Congress (TMC) victory rally following the party's bypoll win. The student was found with an injury on her neck on the verandah of her home in Barochandgar village, an area known to be a Congress-CPM stronghold. She later succumbed. Residents allege that the bomb was thrown from a TMC victory procession targeting a CPM supporter's house. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock and grief over the incident. In a statement, she said: 'I am shocked and deeply saddened at the death of a young girl in an explosion at Barochandgar in Krishnanagar police district. My prayers and thoughts are with the family in their hour of grief. Police shall take strong and decisive legal action against the culprits at the earliest.' Superintendent of Police, Krishnanagar, K Amarnath, told The Indian Express, 'One person has been detained and an investigation is underway. The body was found on the verandah and has been sent for autopsy.' A senior police official, on condition of anonymity, said prima facie it appeared to be a crude bomb. 'No splinters were recovered from the site. While it happened during a victory rally, all angles are being investigated,' the official added. The Election Commission has sought a report on the incident. The girl's mother blamed the TMC for the attack. 'They had been hurling bombs since morning. Those who did this are from the TMC. We are CPM supporters. My whole family votes for CPM,' she said. The West Bengal Police, in a statement on social media, said: 'Today, a 13-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries sustained from an explosion in Kaliganj PS area of Krishnanagar police district. We shall spare no effort to nab the culprits behind this extremely unfortunate death. Raids are on in full swing. Our thoughts are with the family.' The incident has triggered a political row. CPM state secretary Mohammad Selim hit out at the ruling party, questioning the TMC's oft-quoted slogan 'Badla noi, badal chai' (No revenge, we want change), and demanded accountability from its leadership. 'Not speeches, not sweets – bombs were thrown in the name of 'victory' in a bypoll! A minor girl was blown to death even before counting ended in Kaliganj. Only in (Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee)'s Bengal can an election celebration look like a terrorist attack! How brutal, how sick, how inhuman do you have to be to throw bombs while kids are on the street?' BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar posted on X. The by-election in Kaliganj was held following the death of the sitting MLA. TMC candidate Alifa Ahmed won the seat with a substantial margin, results for which were declared earlier in the day.

Odisha is peaceful, tourists don't require special permission: Dy CM
Deputy Chief Minister and Tourism Minister Pravati Parida stated on Monday that Odisha tourists don't require special permission from their home countries to visit the state. Answering media queries over the Level-2 travel advisory issued by the US State Department, Parida said on Monday: 'I was checking with the data and found that the number of American tourists visiting Odisha is very negligible. The US may find the rapid development of India a threat, and for this, they are making such assertions. But I don't feel Odisha or any other state in India are in such a situation that tourists will visit that region after getting permission from their country. Every country is free to make laws for its citizens. However, India is safe under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.' The Tourism Minister also highlighted the prompt action taken by police following the college student gang rape incident at Gopalpur beach in Ganjam district on June 15 that shocked the whole nation. Emphasising the state government's concerns over women's safety, she asserted that police succeeded in arresting all the accused involved in the shameful incident within just a few hours of the incident. She also informed media persons that the state government has already held two meetings mulling steps to increase security at various tourist spots and lovers' points in the state, and a decision in this regard will be taken soon. Earlier, the opposition Congress and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) had targeted the state government over the travel advisory issued by the US State Department, alleging deterioration of the law-and-order situation in the state under the BJP-led government. Senior BJD leader Arun Sahoo has alleged that the advisory issued by the US government corroborates the party's claim that the law and order situation has collapsed in Odisha, and incidents of women facing sexual abuse and other atrocities increased during the last year under the BJP-led state government. He also accused that Moist activities, which were suppressed during the BJD-led government, are rearing their head again in the state. Notably, the US has recently issued a Level-2 travel advisory for several states in India, including Odisha, asking its citizens travelling to these states to 'exercise increased caution' due to crime, especially targeting women and terrorism threats.

AAP's Gopal Italia secured victory in Visavadar whilst BJP's Rajendra Chavda claimed the Kadi seat on Monday as the Gujarat constituency bypoll counting concluded. In Punjab's Ludhiana West assembly seat, AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora showed promising leads, maintaining a 7,000-vote advantage over Congress contender Bharat Bhushan Ashu. Regarding Ludhiana West results, Kejriwal noted that Punjab's residents have demonstrated increased support compared to 2022, indicating their satisfaction with the government's performance. "The people of Gujarat are now fed up with BJP and they are seeing hope in Aam Aadmi Party," he posted on X in Hindi. Expressing gratitude to Punjab and Gujarat residents, Kejriwal emphasised the electorate's rejection of both BJP and Congress in these bypolls. "Many congratulations to all of you on the splendid victory of Aam Aadmi Party in Visavadar seat of Gujarat and Ludhiana West seat of Punjab. Many congratulations and many thanks to the people of Gujarat and Punjab.
