Democrats are blowing their opportunity to hammer Trump on tariffs, Washington Post columnist warns

Washington Post columnist Catherine Rampell slammed the Democratic Party on Friday over not being more aggressive in its criticisms of President Donald Trump's tariffs. In a new piece, the economics columnist argued that liberal lawmakers are not meeting the threat of the tariffs with their "mealymouthed" concerns. "This has been the mealymouthed critique of President Donald Trump's trade wars from many Democrats this past week. They awkwardly triangulate between bashing Trump's catastrophic ideas and touting support for their own similarly spirited, if scaled-down, ideas. No wonder their message is falling flat," she wrote. Rampell described how bad the tariffs will be, stating they'll "raise a typical household's annual costs by $2,700," and that because of them, "recession risks have surged, companies have begun furloughing workers, and our once-close allies are flipping us the bird." She declared that Democratic lawmakers should be having a field day over this, but they're not. "If this is a curse to the U.S. economy, it should be a windfall for Democratic politicians. Instead, Democrats are blowing their good fortune," she said, adding, "Rather than shouting from the rooftops that trade wars are bad, Democrats babble in 'yes, buts.' Yes, these particular tariffs are costly and regressive, they say, but when Democrats impose tariffs, somehow they present no such downsides." Rampell mentioned how the party has seemed to contradict itself on tariffs in the past, noting how it "assailed" the first Trump administration's tariffs "in the 2018 midterms and 2020 presidential election — shortly before adopting them as their own." As the columnist recounted, former President Biden "extended (nearly) all of Trump's existing tariffs," even after denouncing them previously. "In some cases, he expanded them or replaced them with slightly different trade barriers. He did so with vigorous support from his party," she wrote. Rampell then ripped multiple Democratic Party figures who have had more nuanced talking points about President Trump's tariffs in recent days, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, D-Mich., who has met with Trump in the Oval Office multiple times this year to discuss his protectionist policies. Whitmer has been carefully criticizing Trump's tariffs while also acknowledging and understanding the president's "motivation behind the tariffs" and even agreeing with Trump that we "need to make more stuff in America." Rampell slammed Whitmer for criticizing the tariffs but providing no real alternative to them. "On Wednesday, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) gave a speech criticizing Trump for wielding tariffs like a 'hammer.' When asked how would she deploy tariffs differently, Whitmer could not answer. 'I don't know how I would have enacted them differently,' she said. 'I haven't really thought about that. What I have thought about, though, is, you know, tariffs are, need to be used like a scalpel, not a hammer.'" The columnist also slammed Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., for critiquing Trump's tariffs while having supported Biden's. She wrote that Warren's "real problem with Trump's tariffs is that companies will use them as an excuse for 'price gouging' and profiteering. The stock market massacre suggests investors don't agree tariffs will be profitable. But even if Warren's critique were true, the same logic should apply to the Biden-née-Trump tariffs Warren backed." She also accused "lefty populist thinkers" of only criticizing Trump because the tariffs aren't being used for their agenda. Additionally, Rampell said that the party has backed itself into "a corner" on this topic because they're also trying to appeal to their supporters in pro-tariff constituencies, like unions. The columnist concluded her points, arguing that since "Americans hate Trump's tariffs," "Democrats should stop pulling their punches." "What the country needs is an unequivocal, full-throated condemnation of pandering protectionism," she said.

MSNBC's New Weekend Primetime Quartet Has Already Started a Conversation

MSNBC's new Saturday and Sunday primetime panel, 'The Weekend,' won't kick off until later this month, but the show's four hosts just got their first chance to chew over their plans. At first glance, Ayman Mohyeldin, Elise Jordan, Catherine Rampell and Antonia Hylton don't seem to have too much in common. Each has a distinctive background that is unlike the others. Hylton gained traction working for upstart news outlets including Mic and before joining NBCUniversal. Rampell has made a name for herself not only for economic analysis at The Washington Post but also as a frequent talk-show contributor to everything from CNN's 'News Night' to HBO's 'Real Time.' Mohyeldin first began to emerge at NBC News delivering reports last decade from the Middle East. And Jordan has worked for Senator Rand Paul and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. 'We all have different specialties, and you'll see those flavors' when the program launches. MSNBC is betting heavily on multi-host panels such as these. Rebecca Kutler, who was named to lead the progressive-leaning news outlet earlier this year, has assembled three different blends of analysts, journalists and experts and will use them for many of MSNBC's weekend hours as well as at 7 p.m. on weekdays. The aforementioned ensemble will be stationed in primetime on Saturdays and Sundays. Meanwhile, Jonathan Capehart, Eugene Daniels and Jackie Alemany will gather on weekend mornings, and Michael Steele, Alicia Menendez and Symone Sanders-Townsend will anchor MSNBC's early-evening slot, which is meant to gather viewers for primetime. MSNBC is expanding its use of panel shows in tandem with its two main competitors. At Fox News Channel, the roundtable program 'The Five' is typically the most-watched hour on the schedule, and the network's grid also has room for 'The Big Weekend Show' and 'Outnumbered.' CNN has gained some traction with the 10 p.m. panel program 'NewsNight,' anchored by Abby Phillip. Mohyehldin says there's an opportunity in weekend prime, where he has been leading a show as a solo anchor for MSNBC since 2021. 'I've come to realize that the people who watch on Saturday and Sunday nights are very dedicated viewers. There are people who really are passionate and care about this country and what's happening around the world,' he says. 'We know that there are millions of things that people can be doing on Saturday and Sunday night.' All four of the co-anchors believe they will have room to offer viewers a deeper conversation, because they will have three hours to fill each weekend evening. 'I hope we can be the people who bring our viewers' context about stories that have developed during the week, says Hylton, and help the audience 'make sense' of what they've been following, There could also be room for levity, she says. 'Everything can't be that our lives are over and our country is crumbling. We can remind people of the good that's out there, and I hope we are part of that, too.' And while each member of the group holds a different place in the spectrum of opinion, they all have hope of avoiding some of the 'hot talk' for which the panel format is famous. 'An interesting dinner table conversation that's not personally offensive is the goal,' says Jordan. 'We shouldn't all be in agreement all the time. That's not interesting. Nobody learns anything from that,' she adds, but the hope is for 'civil disagreements, but I think from a place of mutual respect.' WaPo Columnist Catherine Rampell Joins MSNBC as ‘The Weekend' Co-Host

Washington Post columnist Catherine Rampell is joining MSNBC as a co-host of the 'The Weekend,' where she will sit alongside Ayman Mohyeldin and another to-be-named co-host in the evenings. Rampell, a frequent guest on various MSNBC shows, made the announcement on Tuesday morning while appearing on 'Ana Cabrera Reports.' An exact date for Rampell's first 'The Weekend' show, which airs from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET on Saturdays and Sundays, is not set just yet, but a person with knowledge of her hiring said she will start this spring. Rampell, a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Princeton University, is known for her work covering economics, politics and public policy, with an emphasis on data-driven stories. Prior to the Post, she worked at The New York Times, where she covered economics and theater. In 2021, she received the Online Journalism Award for Commentary. Her hiring is the latest in a string of changes from new MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler, who took over the top job earlier this year for Rashida Jones. Last week, MSNBC signed Politico alum and current White House Correspondents' Association President Eugene Daniels to be its new Senior Washington Correspondent, as well as The Washington Post's Jackie Alemany as a Washington Correspondent. Both will serve as co-hosts of a new version of 'The Weekend' that airs in the mornings, alongside Jonathan Capehart. Kutler's push to revamp MSNBC also included the jettisoning of longtime MSNBC anchor Joy Reid and the promotion of former Biden Administration Press Secretary Jen Psaki into a primetime role. Alex Wagner has also lost her primetime gig, but will remain at the channel. The moves come after MSNBC's ratings took a big hit following the 2024 election, but have enjoyed a recent increase following President Trump's inauguration.
