Ohio State coach Jake Diebler, former players, praise family culture, expectations at OSU
Ohio State coach Jake Diebler, former players, praise family culture, expectations at OSU The Ohio State basketball program welcomed in some former players for "Vet Week" over the last few days. It's been a great opportunity for the current players on the roster to connect with some of the legends and players that have donned the Scarlet and Gray in the past for some teaching, competition, and camaraderie. One of the things those close to and inside the program always appreciate is the expectations and the family culture through the years. It's clear that the expectations haven't been met over the last decade or so, but head coach Jake Diebler is trying to change that. One thing that has not waned is the family atmosphere, hence all of the former guys coming back to the banks of the Olentangy to be a part of this week. On Thursday, Diebler and the former players spoke to the current roster to let them know about being a part of an extended family and where the program should be going forward. It was a tough love type of moment, especially when the players talked. "The family part of this program is one of my favorite things. It's real," Diebler said. "When we're playing in -- I don't care where -- there's going to be former players in the building and always watching. Their care level is elite. Care just as much as these guys care, because if you do, we'll do something special ..."Many of the guys right here are the ones that put those numbers (accolades) on the wall. You getting to wear Ohio State is the privilege of a lifetime. And our job is just to hold you to that standard." You can watch the rest of the messaging, including guys like Scoonie Penn, D'Angelo Russel, and JJ Sullinger looking to hold the team accountable. Here's to hoping all of this messaging, optimism, and hard work translates to more wins this season, one that results in some of those special things Diebler and the former players were talking about. HBO doc spotlights Ohio State sex abuse scandal
A new documentary about Ohio State University's sexual abuse scandal debuts Tuesday on HBO Max, exploring how former campus physician Richard Strauss abused hundreds of male athletes over two decades. Why it matters: Lawsuits from some survivors are still pending. The George Clooney-produced film, " Surviving Ohio State," will bring more national attention to their cases. Catch up quick: Strauss abused hundreds of male student-athletes from 1978 to 1998 during medical exams, per a 2019 independent investigation and university data. Officials knew about complaints as early as 1979 but "failed to investigate or act meaningfully," the investigation found. Strauss died by suicide in 2005. Survivors first publicly alleged abuse in 2018. 💭 Alissa's thought bubble: I received early viewing access to the documentary, a thoughtful and often-shocking synopsis of a complicated and uncomfortable topic. While much of the information may be familiar to those who have closely followed the story, it does a great job explaining how abuse happened in survivors' voices. Between the lines: Tough-guy gender stereotyping made it harder for them to talk about it and be taken seriously, survivors say — by officials back then, and by the public today. Many depended on OSU for scholarships and Strauss's medical checkoffs to compete, further complicating the situation. "It was a dirty little secret that we all just tip-toed around, and we just dealt with it," a former wrestler says. Zoom in: "Surviving Ohio State" spends time highlighting U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Urbana), an assistant wrestling coach during Strauss's tenure. Jordan has denied knowing about the abuse. Follow the money: Since 2018, OSU has settled with 296 survivors (more than half of plaintiffs) for more than $60 million, university spokesperson Ben Johnson tells Axios. The university also continues to cover the costs of survivors' counseling and other medical treatment. The cases of former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor Larry Nassar and former University of Michigan doctor Robert Anderson attracted more attention and resulted in larger settlements compared with OSU's, though the institutionalized abuse is on a similar scale, the film notes. What they're saying:"We express our deep regret and apologies to all who experienced Strauss' abuse," an OSU statement to Axios reads.

Former Ohio State basketball players get fans pumped for upcoming season
Former Ohio State basketball players get fans pumped for upcoming season If you haven't noticed yet, the Ohio State basketball program is welcoming former players back to Columbus for a week they call "Vet Camp." It's a chance for former OSU players to come back to town and practice, work out, and coach the current roster full of players. It's a great time to connect and be around guys who have been through the thick and thin, who have bled Scarlet and Gray and can relate and provide guidance, competition, and a mature outlook on what it means to be an OSU basketball player. After Monday, many of those who came back to stay in touch with the program they used to play for took time out to express their excitement about the upcoming season on social media. It's a short message by the likes of Greg Oden, D'Angelo Russell, Brice Sensabaugh, Kosta Koufus, and Ron Lewis, and a few others, of the anticipation for what this season could bring. All believe in what head coach Jake Diebler and the program are building and what could be in store for the 2025-2026 season. If you haven't seen the messages each provided, you can get a look now thanks to the Ohio State Hoops "X" account below. Hopefully, these former players are correct because the Buckeye program sorely needs to have a momentum-building year where it makes it back to the NCAA Tournament. It would help immensely if Ohio State also contended for a Big Ten title and more, but baby steps, right? Ohio State basketball welcomes in former players to work out with current roster
Ohio State basketball welcomes in former players to work out with current roster One of the great things about being at Ohio State is all of the former athletes who have made it to the pros coming back to mingle and be around the program. And we're not just talking about football, though that's been where most of the traffic has come from through the most recent of years. Don't forget, despite this downturn in the OSU basketball program, the Buckeye hoopsters have a very good tradition themselves as well. You know a head coach really gets it when he invites those who used to don the Scarlet and Gray back to town to interact and work out with the current roster, and Jake Diebler fits that bill. In fact, Monday just so happened to be one of those days when Ohio State welcomed in some of those OSU legends to be a part of Vet camp. The current players got to play with, and be coached by the likes of Greg Oden, D'Angelo Russell, and E.J. Liddell. It was also a chance to see some of the newcomers interact with the current team and former players. Transfers Gabe Cupps, Christoph Tilly, and Brandon Noel were sweating it out alongside freshmen A'mare Bynum and Myles Herro. Germany product Mathieu Grujicic was also there, but things are still being worked out with his eligibility and visa, according to Eleven Warriors, so he was an innocent bystander. Ohio State is looking to get back to the NCAA Tournament after missing out three straight years. There is a good mix of veteran scorers and incoming talent, so the hope is that all of it comes together to make a run and get back to where the program belongs. WATCH: Ohio State men's basketball players get first look at new court in Value City Arena
WATCH: Ohio State men's basketball players get first look at new court in Value City Arena In case you missed the news late last week, the Ohio State men's and women's basketball programs are getting a new design for their basketball court, and yeah -- it's pretty sleek. Gone is the traditional hardwood color as the base, as it gives way to a gray court with red sidelines, out-of-bounds, and lane areas. It brings OSU into some of the newer looks we've seen across the country with these court designs. Prior to the unveiling to the public, the OSU men's basketball team got a sneak peek at the new court design and layout, and their reactions are pretty priceless -- in a very good way. If you haven't gotten a look at how the likes of Devin Royal, John Mobley, and Colin White reacted to their first look at the new floor inside Value City Arena, we've got their genuine reactions below, thanks to the "Ohio State Hoops" X account (formerly Twitter). Though not completely done and able to be viewed in person yet, we can't wait to see how this new design looks on a 4K high definition television or streaming device.
