55,000km of rural roads built in Bihar in 10 years, says PM
Patna: Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on Friday said around 55,000km of rural roads have been constructed in Bihar over the last 10 years. Addressing a public rally at Jasoli in Siwan, where he launched development projects worth over Rs 9,000 crore, Modi greeted the crowd in Bhojpuri and highlighted the state's infrastructural progress under his govt. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He said more than 1.5 crore households in Bihar have been connected to electricity and water supply in the past decade and over 45,000 common service centres have been established. "Despite overnight rain, a large number of people came to bless me. I promise a new beginning in Bihar," he said. The PM laid the foundation stone for a 500MW-hour battery energy storage system project, aimed at strengthening the state's power infrastructure and supporting renewable energy. The Centre has approved Rs 135 crore as viability gap funding, calculated at Rs 27 lakh per MWh or 30% of the capital cost, whichever is lower. Batteries ranging from 5MW to 20MW will be installed at substations in Muzaffarpur, Motihari, Bettiah, Bhagalpur, Sitamarhi, Fatuha, Mushahari, Jamui, Kishanganj and Siwan. He also flagged off the Patliputra Junction-Gorakhpur Vande Bharat Express and the first consignment of diesel locomotives manufactured at the Marhaura plant in Saran, which is being exported to the Republic of Guinea. "They used to call Saran backward, but now engines made here are being sent to Africa. Bihar will be hailed in Africa too," he said, taking a dig at the opposition RJD-Congress alliance. Modi inaugurated the new Vaishali-Deoria railway line worth over Rs 400 crore and launched a new train service on the route. He also opened six sewage treatment plants under the Namami Gange project worth over Rs 1,800 crore and laid the foundation for water supply, sanitation and STP projects valued at more than Rs 3,000 crore in various towns of Bihar. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Projects launched include sewerage and water supply works in Patna, Mokama, Fatuha, Begusarai, Bakhtiyarpur, Motihari, Raxaul, Buxar, Ara, Bettiah, Siwan, Sasaram and Chhapra. He said the new Vande Bharat train would boost tourism and industry by connecting Baba Hariharnath in Sonepur and Baba Gorakhnath in Uttar Pradesh. "It will also create job opportunities for youth," he added. Modi said more than four crore poor people have received pucca houses under PMAY, including 57 lakh in Bihar and 1.10 lakh in Siwan alone. "Three crore more houses will be built. I will not sleep peacefully. I will keep working day and night because you are my family. All our schemes prioritise the poor," he said. "What pleases me most is that many of these houses are registered in the names of women who never had property before," the PM added. Over the past few years, tap water has reached more than 12 crore households across the country, including 4.5 lakh families in Siwan, he said, adding that pipelines and STPs have now been approved for dozens of additional cities in Bihar. Goods like makhana, fruits and vegetables from Bihar will also reach international markets, he said.

The major initiatives included the new Vaishali-Deoria railway line, constructed at a cost of over ₹ 400 crore, and a new train service on the route. He also flagged off the Vande Bharat Express between Patliputra and Gorakhpur, which will operate via Muzaffarpur and Bettiah, improving rail connectivity in northern Bihar. 'Bihar will prosper and play a big role in the prosperity of the country,' Modi said, adding that the state, once dismissed as backward, is now becoming a hub for 'Make in India' manufacturing, with the first locomotive from the Marhowra plant being exported to Guinea in Africa. Modi reminded people Bihar's deep historical contributions, invoking the memory of Desh Ratna Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan. He accused previous regimes of turning poverty into Bihar's fate through corruption and inefficiency. 'They never gave the poor access to electricity, water, or housing. Even gas connections needed a recommendation,' he said, drawing a contrast with his government's welfare outreach. In the housing sector, Modi released the first instalment to over 53,600 beneficiaries of the PM Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) and handed over keys to newly built houses to mark the 'Grih Pravesh' of over 6,600 families. 'More than 5.7 million pucca homes have been built in Bihar under this scheme,' he said, noting that many are registered in the names of women, which he called a symbol of social progress. He cited the World Bank data that 250 million Indians have come out of poverty in the last decade and claimed that nearly 40 million people in Bihar have exited poverty in the same period. He praised Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar's governance, saying that the state's transformation is a result of a coordinated effort. 'This is not just about statistics. These are lives changed,' he said.

Mr. Ramesh said, "The advertisement-loving prime minister is once again on a tour of Bihar. The Congress leader claimed that oppression against the deprived classes is at its peak in Bihar, the law-and-order situation is extremely bad, criminals have become unbridled and the common citizens are helpless. Everyday, there are reports of killings, robberies and violence against women, he claimed. There is no employment opportunity for youngsters in the State, and they are forced to migrate from Bihar, the former Union minister said. "During this visit, the prime minister will also express his electoral concern about the pollution of Mother Ganga. But the truth is that in the last 11 years, 'Ganga cleaning' has become just an election jumla, which is suddenly remembered before every poll," he added. The Congress accused the BJP-led Centre and the JD(U)-BJP government in Bihar of not fulfilling their promise of purifying the Ganga and claimed that the condition of the river is such that its water is neither drinkable nor suitable for bathing. Addressing a press conference, party MP Manoj Kumar cited a report to claim that of the 13 STPs built for the Ganga and its tributaries in Bihar, only seven are working. He said the promise made to purify the Ganga water under the "Namami Gange" project has turned out to be false. "Narendra Modi and (Bihar Chief Minister) Nitish Kumar together neither took any step towards flood control nor made the Ganga water drinkable. Even the NGT imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the Bihar government," he claimed. Mr. Kumar said that due to the high amount of faecal coliform (FC) bacteria, the NGT has stated that the river's water is neither fit for drinking nor for bathing.
