Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth over ₹5 ,200 crore in Siwan, Bihar , aiming to boost infrastructure, connectivity, and socio-economic growth in the region.Addressing a public gathering, the Prime Minister said the projects would significantly contribute to Bihar's development and reaffirmed the state's role in shaping a prosperous India. He also highlighted that a record 25 crore people across the country have risen out of poverty in the past decade, with nearly 4 crore from Bihar alone.Among the major announcements was the inauguration of the new Vaishali–Deoria railway line and the launch of a new train service on this route. The PM also flagged off the Patliputra–Gorakhpur Vande Bharat Express via Muzaffarpur and Bettiah, improving connectivity in North Bihar.In a significant boost to the 'Make in India' initiative, Modi flagged off the first export locomotive built at the Marhowra factory in Saran district, headed to the Republic of Guinea. He called it a matter of pride that an engine made in Bihar would now run on African tracks.The PM inaugurated six sewage treatment plants (STPs) under the Namami Gange project worth over ₹1,800 crore and laid the foundation stone for additional water supply, sanitation, and STP projects worth over ₹3,000 crore in several towns across Bihar. These initiatives aim to improve water access and sanitation in urban and rural areas.He also laid the foundation stone for a 500 MWh Battery Energy Storage System across 15 grid substations, including in Siwan, Muzaffarpur, Motihari, and Bettiah. The system is expected to help stabilize power supply and reduce electricity costs for consumers.As part of housing initiatives, Modi released the first instalment to over 53,600 beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban (PMAY-U) and handed over keys to select families whose houses have been completed.Taking aim at previous governments, Modi accused them of neglect, lawlessness, and corruption, stating that Bihar had long suffered from poverty and backwardness due to misgovernance. Kerala student returns in special flight from Iran
Fadila Kachakkaran, a Malayali student pursuing her second-semester MBBS programme at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, arrived in New Delhi on Saturday, June 21, 2025, on a special flight arranged as part of the Union government's 'Operation Sindhu' to evacuate Indian nationals from the conflict-affected regions of Iran and Israel. She was part of the special flight carrying Indian nationals that reached Delhi airport around 5 p.m., said a communication issued by the Department of Non-Resident Keralites Affairs (NoRKA). A native of Mudikode in Malappuram, she was expected to reach Kochi airport from Delhi around 11.50 p.m. by an IndiGo flight, it added. Muhammed Kachakkaran, her father, who is a civil engineer in Saudi Arabia, had reached Delhi to receive her. She had gone to Tehran in September 2024 to pursue the MBBS programme, the communication said. A special team formed to help people caught in conflict zones return home safely as per the directive of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has been coordinating the evacuation operations. The team is led by Chetan Kumar Meena, Additional Resident Commissioner at Kerala House, New Delhi, according to the communication. Mr. Vijayan had earlier instructed him to ensure necessary facilities for returning Keralites. Accommodation will be provided at Kerala House for Keralites arriving in Delhi. They will be sent to the State as soon as flights are available. The Chief Minister had earlier said that Malayalis wishing to return to the State should register their names through the NoRKA Global Contact Centre helpline: 1800 425 3939 (toll-free) or +91 88020 12345 (for international missed calls).

Nitish will be CM if NDA wins elections, says JD(U)
Patna: Amid fresh speculation over the NDA's chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming assembly elections, the JD(U) on Saturday reiterated that Nitish Kumar would be the alliance's nominee. The party cited the BJP's past statements affirming that the leader who spearheads the campaign would ultimately take the top post. The renewed debate followed an interview given by Union home minister Amit Shah to an English daily. When asked who would be the NDA's CM candidate, Shah said on Friday, "Only time will decide who will be the Bihar CM. But what is clear is that we will fight this election with Nitish as chief minister." Reacting to the comment, JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said, "All NDA constituents, including their state presidents and Amit Shahji, have clearly said that the election would be fought under Nitish's leadership. So, naturally, he will be the CM if the people give him the mandate. The public also desires this." He dismissed suggestions of ambiguity, saying that even PM Narendra Modi has invoked Lalu Prasad's 'jungle raj' while affirming Nitish's leadership. "Even the 2020 elections were fought under Nitish and he became CM," Neeraj Kumar added. Highlighting the NDA's unified stance, Kumar said, "The alliance has adopted the slogan '2025, Phir Se Nitish.' When this is the message on posters and in slogans, Shah's statement must be understood in that context." However, leader of the opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav took a swipe at JD(U), saying that Nitish's authority had diminished to such an extent that ticket distribution would now be done by Shah.

Trump confirms DR Congo-Rwanda peace deal
US President Donald Trump took credit Friday (June 20, 2025O for a peace deal negotiated in Washington between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda — and complained that he would not get a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. The warring African nations said in a joint statement on Wednesday that they had initialled an agreement aimed at ending the conflict in eastern DRC -- to be formally signed in the U.S. capital next week. "This is a Great Day for Africa and, quite frankly, a Great Day for the World!" Trump said in a Truth Social post confirming the breakthrough. The president said officials from DR Congo and Rwanda would be in Washington on Monday for the signing, although their joint statement said they would put pen to paper on June 27. The resource-rich eastern DRC, which borders Rwanda, has been plagued by violence for three decades, with a resurgence since the anti-government M23 armed group went on a renewed offensive at the end of 2021. The deal — which builds on a declaration of principles signed in April — was reached during three days of talks between the neighbors in Washington, according to their statement.
