Puducherry has launched a two-month-long diarrhoea prevention campaign that aims to reach out to an estimated 74,390 children in the 0-5 years age group. Chief Minister N. Over a two-month-long drive with pre-positioning of two ORS packets and zinc as a co-packaging to children under 5 years of age to broad base access to treatment, the effort would also promote individual and community-level hygienic practices, such as washing hands thoroughly with soap and clean water, consumption of safe and purified drinking water and maintaining proper sanitation facilities. The Health Department will also ensure that children receive Rotavirus and Pentavalent vaccinations and Vitamin A syrup as per schedule and encourage exclusive breastfeeding for infants for the first six months before introducing complementary feeding from the seventh month. MLAs V. Aroumougame and S. Ramesh, V. Ravichandran, Health Director, S. Govindarajan, Director, National Health Mission in Puducherry, and Health Deputy Directors V. Anandalakshmi (Family Health and Child Health), Shamimunisa Begum (Public Health) and G. Ragunathan (IEC), Kavitha, school headmistress and health officers participated. Puducherry government to begin distribution of free solar pump sets to farmers soon, says Chief Minister

The government will soon start distribution of solar pump sets to eligible farmers free of cost in the Union Territory, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said on Wednesday. Launching government's En Veedu En Nilam scheme at the Botanical Garden, the Chief Minister said administrative steps were being taken to begin distribution of solar pump sets to the farmers at the earliest. Around 6,000 farmers will be eligible for receiving the pump sets in the Union Territory. The scheme was envisaged to homestead vegetable cultivation in a cluster-based approach by extending an aid of ₹5,000 input cost per individual. The Chief Minister distributed 21 items, including seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, green shade nets and pots worth around ₹5,000 to the beneficiaries at the launch. In the first phase, while around 3,000 people would be provided materials required for terrace farming, another 3,000 beneficiaries would be added to the scheme later. 'The scheme was announced in the Budget to promote terrace farming considering the limited space available for cultivation, especially in the town and the outskirts. Though, around ₹1.5 crore was budgeted initially for the scheme, the allocation has been enhanced now to ₹3 crore,' he said. He urged the people to take up dairy farming. There was a huge potential for milk production as the territory was only producing around 45,000 litres per day. 'During the last four years, the government was able to implement stalled welfare programmes as well as introduce new schemes. The free rice distribution was relaunched successfully without any complaint on the quality of rice supplied. The government will soon start distribution of 2kg wheat free of cost to ration card holders,' he said. The Puducherry government was implementing all the promises made to the people in a phased manner. It was important for the administration to maintain close relationship with the Centre to avail more funds. 'It is important to have the support of the Centre. Otherwise, we will have to raise additional revenue by increasing taxes for implementing the schemes,' he said. Minister for Agriculture C. Djeacoumar and Speaker R. Selvam participated.

Rangasamy submits memorandum to Vice-President seeking Statehood for Puducherry

Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has reiterated the demand for Statehood for Puducherry. In a memorandum to visiting Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday, the Chief Minister said Statehood was essential for the development of the union territory. He urged Mr. Dhankhar 'to discuss granting of Statehood issue whenever possible at higher levels to take Puducherry to the next level of quality of life and for enhanced tourism and industrial development.' Mr. Rangasamy said all political parties while in power have impressed upon the Central government the need for granting Statehood to the union territory. The Legislative Assembly has passed several unanimous resolutions demanding the same. It was the earnest desire of all political parties and more importantly people of Puducherry to get Statehood, the memorandum said. 'I would like to emphasize that the elected government of U.T. is a limited government, not by the Constitution but because of the decades old law of Parliament, the U.T. Act of 1963, which is still in force. Even though the government is elected democratically with Council of Ministers and an Assembly, it is unable to function and execute various developmental activities quickly because of lack of powers at the level of Council of Ministers,' he said. The Chief Minister said the territory would be eligible for additional revenue of ₹ 1,500 crore to ₹ 2,000 crore through devolution of funds if Statehood is granted.
