Rangasamy submits memorandum to Vice-President seeking Statehood for Puducherry

The Hindu5 days ago

Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has reiterated the demand for Statehood for Puducherry. In a memorandum to visiting Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday, the Chief Minister said Statehood was essential for the development of the union territory.
He urged Mr. Dhankhar 'to discuss granting of Statehood issue whenever possible at higher levels to take Puducherry to the next level of quality of life and for enhanced tourism and industrial development.'
Mr. Rangasamy said all political parties while in power have impressed upon the Central government the need for granting Statehood to the union territory. The Legislative Assembly has passed several unanimous resolutions demanding the same. It was the earnest desire of all political parties and more importantly people of Puducherry to get Statehood, the memorandum said.
'I would like to emphasize that the elected government of U.T. is a limited government, not by the Constitution but because of the decades old law of Parliament, the U.T. Act of 1963, which is still in force. Even though the government is elected democratically with Council of Ministers and an Assembly, it is unable to function and execute various developmental activities quickly because of lack of powers at the level of Council of Ministers,' he said.
The Chief Minister said the territory would be eligible for additional revenue of ₹ 1,500 crore to ₹ 2,000 crore through devolution of funds if Statehood is granted.

Laughable: RJD MP Manoj Jha replies to PM Modi's ‘Dalit insult' charge at Lalu Yadav

New Delhi: RJD leader and Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha on Saturday issued a rebuttal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Dalit insult' charge at the party supremo Lalu Yadav, during his visit to Bihar and said that these accusations are laughable. PM Modi, addressing a rally in Siwan yesterday, accused the RJD chief of disrespecting Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and tore into RJD for leaving behind "jungle raj" legacy in the state. Reacting to the remarks on Saturday, Jha said, 'Sometimes the Prime Minister says laughable things. Perhaps that's the intent, to make people laugh a little. But the person he is targeting spent his entire life following Babasaheb Ambedkar's ideals.' The RJD lawmaker further pointed to the Prime Minister's silence on 'Dalit insult' during earlier statements made by Home Minister Amit Shah in the Parliament. 'The Home Minister had said in the House, 'Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, if someone took God's name this often, they would have reached heaven.' That day, Mr. Prime Minister, you remained silent. Why the selective outrage now?,' he asked. 'Let me make one last comment, the blue scarf you wore in Bihar suddenly felt too heavy when you reached Odisha. That scarf, which had a saffron stripe that diluted the dignity of the blue, was taken off in front of Lord Jagannath. Why? Did it become too burdensome?' he added. Prime Minister Modi, during a rally in Siwan, Bihar on Friday, had accused the opposition of weakening the legacy of Dr. Ambedkar, the architect of Constitution, through dynastic politics. 'The RJD and its allies have insulted Babasaheb and hindered Bihar's progress through their 'family first' approach,' PM Modi said, while inaugurating and laying the foundation for development projects worth over Rs 5,200 crore. He added that Bihar would play a crucial role in India's journey to becoming the world's third-largest economy.

Party of convicts: BJP's Shehzad Poonawalla slams RJD over Tejashwi's remarks against PM Modi

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla on Saturday launched a scathing attack at RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, following latter's comments mocking Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Terming the RJD as a party of scam convicts, Poonawalla said, 'The party whose history is rooted in fodder scams, where its leader has been convicted, and whose family is facing trial in the land-for-jobs scam, has no moral ground to lecture anyone." 'When such people, driven by arrogance and feudal mindset, mock a Prime Minister who once sold tea on railway platforms and rose from there, their true elitist mentality is exposed,' he added. In a pointed remark about dynastic politics, Poonawalla accused the RJD of placing the family above constitutional institutions. 'This is the same mindset where a family is always placed above constitutional positions. Their history includes instances where even Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's photo was disrespected by placing it near their feet. For them, family comes first, not the Constitution or the nation,' he said. His remarks come after Tejashwi Yadav, addressing the media on Friday, dismissed the Prime Minister's rally in Siwan as orchestrated. 'The administration was deployed to gather the crowd. The public wasn't interested, so they had to be brought forcefully,' Tejashwi alleged. He further claimed: 'Neither PM Modi nor Nitish Kumar are true mass leaders. If Lalu Ji simply stands on the road, lakhs will gather without any effort.' Tejashwi also accused the BJP of misusing state resources, saying, 'They've spent crores from Bihar government funds over days, and yet failed to draw a crowd. That's why officials were used to fill seats.' Poonawalla also criticised Rahul Gandhi saying, "In the INDIA Alliance, and now even in the Congress party, no one takes Rahul Gandhi seriously. He believes that his family's authority is above the constitutional framework. When they win elections in Karnataka, Telangana, or Himachal, and get 99 seats, the Election Commission is praised. But if they lose in Maharashtra or Haryana, they start blaming the Election Commission."
