NCC volunteers set sail on 10-day sea expedition
A group of 60 students from the Naval Unit of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) from various schools and colleges in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu, has embarked on an ocean sailing expedition to Karaikal and back.
Chief Minister N. Rangasamy flagged off the 'Sagar Sangram' expedition organised by the NCC Directorate Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andaman and Nicobar Islands at the Thengaithittu fishing harbour recently.
The group, comprising 35 boys and 25 girl cadets, from NCC units in Puducherry and Cuddalore, set out on a 10-day journey covering an estimated 300 km in three vessels.
Apart from R. Baskar, MLA and A. Mohamad Ismail, Director of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare, a crowd gathered at the harbour and cheered for the group on their departure. The group is being accompanied by three naval unit officers and two associates.
According to a press note, the volunteers will organise various social service events, such as blood donation camps, sapling plantation and cleanliness drives to create awareness among the public at select destinations enroute.
As per schedule, the expedition planned in four legs, will reach Karaikal via Cuddalore, Parangipettai and Poompuhar. The group is expected to return to Puducherry on June 20.
Meanwhile, in a post on 'X', the NCC Directorate said the expedition 'highlights the adventurous spirit and resilience of our young cadets and also underscores the importance of maritime activities in fostering leadership, teamwork, and endurance'.

Mount Everest conquered: Defence Minister Singh felicitates 10 NCC cadets for historic feat
New Delhi: In a stirring ceremony, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday felicitated a 10-member National Cadet Corps (NCC) Mountaineering Expedition Team, including five girls and five boys, for successfully scaling Mount Everest, the world's highest peak on May 18, 2025. During the event held at South Block, New Delhi, the cadets shared their experiences of the expedition, detailing the rigorous training, meticulous planning and challenges encountered. The Defence Minister commended the team for passing the test of courage, discipline, resilience and composure with flying colours. The cadets were honoured with a cheque of Rs 10 lakh for achieving the feat in the harshest of conditions. The young mountaineers, led by Colonel Amit Bisht, achieved the feat in the face of extreme weather and high-altitude challenges, completing the expedition without a single injury. Terming the cadets as a source of inspiration to the younger generation, Defence Minister Singh stated that "with the expedition, the brave cadets have sent a message that even the world's highest peak is no limit for the youth of the country." He exuded confidence that "the cadets would overcome future challenges with the same courage and determination they displayed while scaling Mount Everest." The Defence Minister also lauded the NCC for nurturing the next generation of physically resilient, mentally strong and socially responsible citizens. He also appreciated the family members of the cadets who supported them in this endeavour. DG NCC Lt-Gen Gurbirpal Singh was among the dignitaries present on the occasion. It is pertinent to note here that the feat marked the third successful Everest expedition by the NCC, following similar accomplishments in 2013 and 2016. The expedition team comprised 10 cadets, a contingent of officers, junior commissioned officers, instructors and non-commissioned officers. The team consisted of Subedar Major Balkar Singh, the first Subedar Major of the Indian Army to summit Mount Everest. The young cadet of the team was just 16 years old.

NCC cadets take to skies in Poonch at the edge of PoJK
The cadets of the NCC directorate Jammu Kashmir & Ladakh, participated in a state-level adventure parasailing camp at the picturesque village of Jhullus in Poonch, barely 500 metres from the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (PoJK). This adventure activity conducted from June 3 to 9, was organised by five J&K Battalion NCC, Poonch. The event saw the active participation of 100 NCC cadets and Associate NCC Officers from various colleges across the Poonch and Jammu regions. These young NCC boys and girls hailing from diverse backgrounds, demonstrated exceptional skills, confidence and bravery in undertaking such a challenging activity, which is considered a significant component of adventure training aimed at building leadership, resilience and national pride among the youth. Commanding Officer Col Naresh Kaushik said, 'The event served as a powerful display of the determination and courage of Indian youth and the successful conduct of this activity, in a sensitive border area facing persistent security challenges, reaffirmed the resolve of the nation to empower its youth and reinforce their confidence.' The participants underwent rigorous training sessions, including safety drills, physical endurance exercises and meticulous planning, culminating in parasailing flights. The activity was meticulously organised to ensure safety and maximum experiential learning, allowing the cadets not only to challenge their physical limits but also to develop teamwork, leadership and a sense of discipline.
