Why Gianluigi Buffon 'VETOED' Jose Mourinho as Italy coach after Adidas 'agreed to part fund' appointment of controversial Portuguese
Jose Mourinho was being considered for the role of Italy coach before Azzurri legend Gianluigi Buffon vetoed his appointment — according to reports from Italy. Italy last week appointed former AC Milan and Valencia boss Gennaro Gattuso, as the successor to Luciano Spalletti. The Italian Federation acted quickly to bring in the 47-year-old as their new national coach with Spalletti given his marching orders after Italy's dismal 3-0 defeat by Norway in Oslo on June 6. Before they settled on Gattuso, however, they came very close to appointing Mourinho — according to La Repubblica. The report explains that the national team's kit supplier, Adidas, were ready to cover part of the Portuguese's boss' salary. Mourinho is an Adidas ambassador and has had a close relationship with the German company for over a decade. Nonetheless, the Italian Federation would have had to fork out a significant compensation fee to Fenerbahce with the Special One still contracted to the Turkish club for one more year. Jose Mourinho was being seriously considered for the role according to reports from Italy Any approach for Mourinho was apparently stopped in its tracks though by Italy legend Gianluigi Buffon. The 47-year-old is the head of delegation of the Italian national team. Buffon reportedly did not want former Chelsea, Man United and Tottenham boss Mourinho as Italy coach because he felt the team would react best to a national legend at the helm. Reports in Italy have also claimed that Buffon threatened to resign if Roberto Mancini was reappointed as manager. When his fellow 2006 World Cup winner Gattuso was appointed, Buffon said: 'My contract ends on June 30 every year, so resignations were never an issue. 'We chose Rino in consultation with the President and the other professionals we spoke to. I don't think there are good or bad coaches at this level, but rather coaches who are functional to what the team needs. It was a good moment for Rino to become the national team coach.

Jose Mourinho's bold comment to Abramovich to seal huge Chelsea transfer
Didier Drogba would become a Chelsea legend after his move from Marseille in 2004, but Jose Mourinho has revealed how he had to bravely convince Roman Abramovich to sign him Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho once boldly told ex-club owner Roman Abramovich to simply "pay and don't speak" for Blues legend Didier Drogba. Chelsea signed the Ivorian from Marseille for £24million in July 2004, and ended up with a Stamford Bridge hero. With Abramovich's financial revolution at Chelsea gathering pace at the time, Mourinho instructed his employer that he must have the powerful striker in his ranks. And he did not have time for the Russian's questions, risking his standing with the billionaire. "[Roman] Abramovich was asking me, 'Who do you want for the striker?' All the big names in Europe at that time, I told 'Drogba,'" Mourinho relayed. "(Abramovich asked) 'Who is he? Where does he play? Where is he playing?' (I replied) 'Mr Abramovich, pay. Pay and don't speak'. And Didier was an iconic player for Chelsea, for the Premier League." True to Mourinho's insistence, Drogba illustrated his extraordinary talent right off the bat by netting 16 goals despite battling injuries in his inaugural season. He went on to win the Premier League on three occasions, four FA Cups and the Champions League in his first stint at the club. The Ivorian icon eventually moved to Shanghai Shenhua after eight seasons, but he didn't last long in the Chinese Super League. He quickly made his way to European football with Galatasaray, reports Football London. "I played [against] him [Drogba] when I was in Madrid and he was with [Wesley] Sneijder in Galatasaray - they almost killed me, but they didn't and he was fantastic also for Galatasaray," Mourinho added. "Then he came back to Chelsea and I told him, 'You are not number one anymore, but I need you here to help me with the team, with the more experienced players, with the [Eden] Hazards, with the Willians, with the young guys'. He was phenomenal again. There are players with their character and personality, and they are important from day one in their career." In an interview with BBC Football Focus in 2018, Drogba revealed that Mourinho's admiration was reciprocated. "He changed my life, he changed the story of my family," said Drogba. "He told me if you want to be the best, you have to come and play with one of the best teams in the world and one of the best managers in the world… no, the best manager in the world. Everyone was saying £24m was a lot of money. People doubted. When I left, I think the way everyone reacted, I think I covered the investment." In two spells with Chelsea, Drogba, now 47, scored an incredible 164 goals in 381 games. His legend is cemented with the Ivory Coast star also winning the Premier League Golden Boot in 2006/07 and 2009/10. After his second spell in West London, he wrapped up his career with MLS sides Montreal Impact and then with Phoenix Rising in 2018.

Jose Mourinho 'holds talks' with Son Heung-min as Fenerbahce chase Spurs star
Son Heung-min could end up leaving Tottenham Hotspur for Fenerbahce this summer with former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho eyeing up a reunion with the South Korea star Former Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho is keen to set up a reunion with Son Heung-min in Turkey, it has been claimed. Mourinho's Fenerbahce finished second in the Super Lig last season and are looking to strengthen as they aim to get through qualfiying rounds and reach the league phase of the Champions League. One of those targets is South Korea forward Son. Spurrs triggered an extension in the 32-year-old's contract back in January, but his deal only runs until the summer of 2026 and the London club could cash in for the right price. There have been Saudi Pro League links, though Son previously turned down a big-money offer to move to the gulf state. Now, though, reports in Turkey suggest Mourinho is ready to give the forward a way out. Fenerbahce are expected to need to part with around £25million if they want to land Son. However, the player is said to be open to the switch. Son played 70 times for Spurs under Mourinho, scoring 29 goals and adding 25 assists. He scored the first of his four Premier League hat-tricks under the Portuguese, scoring four of his team's five goals in a victory over Southampton in 2020. Spurs have been busy in the early part of the transfer window, completing permanent moves for Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel after successful loans. They also continue to be linked with Bryan Mbeumo, and a move for the Cameroon forward would leave them well-stocked in attack. They have also made a change in the dugout, with Thomas Frank replacing Ange Postecoglou. Former Brentford boss Frank has spoken to club media for the first time since taking charge "The feeling of being the new head coach is extraordinary, really looking forward to this massive challenge," Frank said. "Together with a lot of good people, only heard good stuff about the club, training ground, players, good squad. Massive club, massive potential. Just super, super excited."They've done a very good process, Daniel Levy and Vinai [Venkatesham] and Johan Lange. I've had very good conversations with them where we've discussed everything, details about the club's structure and processes. "Of course I came here to put my view on things and how I saw it, my ideas and the way I want to do things. The way I try to build a team. It's not just me, yes the head coach is important but if I don't have good people around me, it's impossible. If you want to achieve something big, you go together." Mourinho and Fenerbahce at centre of Turkish football scandal as leaked texts force resignations
A major scandal has erupted in Turkish football, leading to the resignation of multiple members of the Turkish Professional Football Disciplinary Board (PDFK) with Jose Mourinho at the heart of it. The controversy stems from leaked WhatsApp messages where PDFK members allegedly mocked Fenerbahce and its high-profile head coach, Mourinho. Turkish publication Ajansspor revealed the inappropriate exchanges, which included messages like, 'Mourinho is being given too much leeway. If this continues, he'll pay the price for it next year,' alongside other derogatory comments aimed at Fenerbahce. In the wake of the leaks, the Istanbul-based club released a furious statement on Tuesday, publicly condemning the 'WhatsApp correspondence' of the PDFK members. The club called on Turkish Football Federation (TFF) President Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu to take 'strict actions.' Tarafsızlık sorgulanıyor: PFDK Üyelerinin ifşa olan yazışmaları hakkında Bugün kamuoyuna yansıyan ve Profesyonel Futbol Disiplin Kurulu üyelerine ait olduğu iddia edilen yazışmalar karşısında kulübümüz Türkiye Futbol Federasyonu'na resmi başvurusunu yapmıştır. Tarafsızlık… — Fenerbahçe SK (@Fenerbahce) June 17, 2025 Haciosmanoglu swiftly responded by requesting the resignations of those involved in the scandal. As a result, all implicated PDFK board members, including their Chairperson, have stepped down from their roles. Related Topics Jose Mourinho / Fenerbahce
