Why Gianluigi Buffon 'VETOED' Jose Mourinho as Italy coach after Adidas 'agreed to part fund' appointment of controversial Portuguese
Jose Mourinho was being considered for the role of Italy coach before Azzurri legend Gianluigi Buffon vetoed his appointment — according to reports from Italy.
Italy last week appointed former AC Milan and Valencia boss Gennaro Gattuso, as the successor to Luciano Spalletti.
The Italian Federation acted quickly to bring in the 47-year-old as their new national coach with Spalletti given his marching orders after Italy's dismal 3-0 defeat by Norway in Oslo on June 6.
Before they settled on Gattuso, however, they came very close to appointing Mourinho — according to La Repubblica.
The report explains that the national team's kit supplier, Adidas, were ready to cover part of the Portuguese's boss' salary. Mourinho is an Adidas ambassador and has had a close relationship with the German company for over a decade.
Nonetheless, the Italian Federation would have had to fork out a significant compensation fee to Fenerbahce with the Special One still contracted to the Turkish club for one more year.
Jose Mourinho was being seriously considered for the role according to reports from Italy
Any approach for Mourinho was apparently stopped in its tracks though by Italy legend Gianluigi Buffon. The 47-year-old is the head of delegation of the Italian national team.
Buffon reportedly did not want former Chelsea, Man United and Tottenham boss Mourinho as Italy coach because he felt the team would react best to a national legend at the helm.
Reports in Italy have also claimed that Buffon threatened to resign if Roberto Mancini was reappointed as manager.
When his fellow 2006 World Cup winner Gattuso was appointed, Buffon said: 'My contract ends on June 30 every year, so resignations were never an issue.
'We chose Rino in consultation with the President and the other professionals we spoke to. I don't think there are good or bad coaches at this level, but rather coaches who are functional to what the team needs. It was a good moment for Rino to become the national team coach.

Kevin De Bruyne wants Napoli boss Antonio Conte to reunite him with Jack Grealish in transfer blow to Man Utd star
KEVIN DE BRUYNE wants Napoli boss Antonio Conte to reunite him with Jack Grealish. Conte has been quizzing De Bruyne about his old Manchester City pal, whose future was sealed when he was axed from Pep Guardiola's Club World Cup squad. 4 4 And the Belgian, 33, who joined the Italians earlier this month, hopes his glowing reference will see Conte also try to land playmaker Grealish. City are willing to take a huge hit on the £100million they paid Aston Villa four years ago. And Grealish, 29, faces a big pay cut as Napoli would pay little more than half of his current £300,000-a-week salary. He will accept that if it gives him a chance of forcing his way back into England boss Thomas Tuchel 's World Cup plans. Everton would love Grealish to be their marquee signing as they begin life in their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock — but the lure from Italy is stronger. SunSport revealed on Monday that Napoli have £45m to spend on Grealish or Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho — but will only buy ONE. Conte's Serie A champs could start their title defence with SIX former Prem stars in their line-up. Scott McTominay 's move from Manchester United went so well he was Serie A's Player of the Year. He is partnered in the midfield engine room by ex-Chelsea and Brighton midfielder Billy Gilmour. And striker Romelu Lukaku is another former United man on their books. Jack Grealish has gone from eye-catching showman and heartthrob to miserable bench warmer - and I know who's to blame Bournemouth midfielder Philip Billing arrived in January, in a move that could become permanent. City would even sanction a loan switch for Grealish — especially if there is a commitment to buy.
