BMW has streamlined the XM lineup (but not the car itself)
BMW has streamlined the XM lineup (but not the car itself) It's now the 50e or the Label… or nothin' Skip 10 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Turn on Javascript to see all the available pictures. 1 / 10 BMW has reshuffled the XM pack slightly, with only two trim levels now available (down from three): the 50e and range-topping Label. The engines remain unchanged, with the 50e's turbocharged hybrid straight-six delivering 469bhp and around 50 miles of electric range. That's from a universal 25.8kWh battery. Advertisement - Page continues below Meanwhile, the Label's V8 ramps the output up to 738bhp, though zero emission driving is lowered slightly to 47 miles. Both cars will now also accept improved charging speeds of up to 11kW. Bimmer has also used the opportunity to broaden the Label's equipment list, adding a new Welcome Light Animation, bigger 22in alloys (with optional 23s) and a series of new colours for the seat upholstery accents. Those include 'Night Blue Merino' and 'Vintage Coffee Brown'. It builds on the various things you get with the 50e, such as a 3D prism graphic along the roof panel, a 14.9in infotainment and 12.3in instrument screen, and a Harmon Kardon surround sound system. Plus, it looks very easy on the eye in there… unlike out there. Pricing starts at £112,580 for the 50e and climbs to £154,470 for the Label. Which is a lot of money to scare children (and no doubt some adults) witless on the pavement. Advertisement - Page continues below Top Gear Newsletter Thank you for subscribing to our newsletter. Facelift BMW XM range revealed with streamlined solitary model
Previous base model departs, leaving the renamed Label as the sole derivative without any powerplant changes. Introduced two years ago as the M division's powerful product ever, BMW has restructured the controversial XM range by making the previously known Red Label the only variant as part of the SUV's first mid-life overhaul. New outside Now known simply as the XM Label, the updates are minor and externally consist of standard 22-inch M light alloy wheels in place of the previous 21-inch wheels, the removal of the red accents, new, optional, 23-inch gloss black M light alloy wheels and a gloss black finish for the kidney grille surround. ALSO READ: Sci-fi in red as BMW unleashes new 550 kW XM Red Label A new welcome animation and Frozen Tanzanite Blue colour from the BMW Individual catalogue round the XM's aesthetics off. Subtle changes inside Mostly colour and upholstery changes have taken place inside. Image: BMW Inside, the revisions are even more subtle and limited to a new black Merino leather upholstery option with Coffee Brown detailing, or Silverstone Merino leather with black detailing. Same powerplant, quicker charging Up front, BMW has upgraded the 25.7-kWh battery pack to now support AC charging up to 11 kW instead of the previous 7.4 kW. No uptakes in power have, however, been achieved with the electric motor still developing 145kW/280Nm and the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 430kW/750Nm. XM now rides on 22-inch alloy wheels as standard instead of the previous 21-inches. Images: BMW Combined, the XM Label outputs 550kW/1 000Nm that goes to all four wheels via the eight-speed Steptronic that acts as housing for the electric motor. The claimed all-electric range is 76 km and the top speed once again limited to 250 km/h or 290 km/h with the optional M Driver's Package selected. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes 3.8 seconds. In South Africa soon Confirmed to make its official public debut at this weekend's 24 Hours of Le Mans, the XM Label has been approved for South Africa, though an official date of reveal hasn't yet been made. While pricing wasn't disclosed either, the German-market variant will start at €183 400, which amounts to a directly converted R3 767 919. Locally, pricing for the Red Label currently starts at R3 650 000, thus expect a price increase once sales of the 'new' Label commence. The Base XM Is Dead for 2026. Long Live the BMW XM Label
BMW is making some serious changes to the XM for 2026. The base trim has been dropped, leaving the 738-horsepower XM Label as the only model available. There's also a better charging rate for the hybrid system, and a host of new exterior colors and interior themes to choose from. As before, the 2026 BMW XM Label gets its power from a twin-turbo V-8 making 577 hp, combined with an electric motor mounted between the engine and transmission. All 738 pound-feet of torque travel through an eight-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels. BMW quotes a 0-60 time of 3.6 seconds, and an electronically limited top speed of 155 miles per hour (or 175 mph, if you option the M Driver's Package). Photo by: BMW In the past, going for the XM Label (previously known as the Label Red) represented a significant jump in performance over the 644-hp base model. Buyers also got some exclusive red-painted exterior trim pieces to visually set it apart. Choosing the Label also came at a cost; the 2025 XM Label started at $187,875 with destination, a $26,200 premium over the standard car. New Options to Choose From Aside from a handful of red-accented exterior badges, the 2026 XM Label has dropped those flashy red trim pieces. BMW has added a handful of new colors to choose from, including the Individual Frozen Tanzanite Blue metallic you see here. Buyers can also now opt to have the XM's standard 23-inch wheels in black (22s are available as a no-cost option). There's a trio of new interior themes to choose from, too: Individual Night Blue full Merino leather with Vintage Coffee accents, Individual Black full Merino leather with Vintage Coffee accents, and Individual Silverstone extended Merino leather with black accents. Better Onboard Charging The XM Label's drivetrain is a full carry-over for 2026. That means it has the same 19.2-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack under the floor. The only change, according to BMW, comes in the M Hybrid's onboard charger. The charging rate has been bumped to 11 kilowatts, up from just 7.4 kilowatts. Photo by: BMW Photo by: BMW Photo by: BMW Before the change, BMW claimed a full charge would take 3 hours, 15 minutes. The company didn't quote an updated time, but we have to assume it's a bit quicker now. Like before, the plug-in system in the XM Label unlocks a fully electric driving range of 30 miles. Launch Date & Pricing BMW will reveal the 2026 XM Label on Saturday, June 14, in France at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Production at the company's Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant will kick off in August, though pricing hasn't been released. The previous XM Label carried a starting MSRP of $187,875, so expect a small price bump to match the added options and better charging. 2026 BMW XM Comes Exclusively in 738-HP Guise and Charges Faster
BMW has dropped the base model from the XM's lineup for 2026, leaving only the 738-hp Label variant. The XM will charge more quickly than before, with BMW upping the maximum charging rate from 7.4 to 11 kilowatt. BMW will also offer a new Frozen Tanzanite Blue exterior color; production of the 2026 XM starts this August. The BMW XM and its aggressive snout debuted for the 2023 model year with a 644-hp plug-in hybrid powertrain, before adding the even brawnier Label variant for the 2024 model year. For 2026, the XM lineup reverts back to just one trim, ditching the base model and retaining only the 738-hp Label model. The 2026 BMW XM also receives a series of new optional colors inside and out, along with a faster charging rate for the battery. Just One Type of XM Since the entry-level XM is no longer, the combination of a twin-turbocharged V-8 and an electric motor will generate 738 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque in all XMs for 2026. The 4.4-liter engine is good for 577 hp on its own, while the transmission-mounted electric motor makes 194 hp. An eight-speed automatic transmission routes those motivating forces to all four wheels, allowing this behemoth to blast from zero to 60 mph in a claimed 3.6 seconds. However, in Car and Driver's instrumented testing, the 644-hp version leapt to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds; the Label is likely even quicker than BMW says. Top speed is limited to 155 mph, but opting for the M Driver's package unlocks a 175-mph maximum. This content is imported from Third party. View Photos BMW Along with simplifying the lineup, BMW has added a new optional BMW Individual color called Frozen Tanzanite Blue metallic. The 23-inch alloy wheels can also now be had in Jet Black, and BMW also implemented a new "Welcome Light Animation" that displays as the owner approaches and unlocks the car. There are three new BMW Individual interior color combinations for 2026. Two of these—Night Blue with Vintage Coffee accents and black with Vintage Coffee accents—are "full" Merino leather packages, meaning virtually every surface of the cabin is covered in the rich material. The last, Silverstone with black accents, is an "extended" Merino leather package, meaning some areas, such as the lower dash, do not receive leather upholstery. View Photos BMW Lastly, but arguably most importantly, BMW has increased the onboard AC charger from 7.4 kilowatts to 11 kilowatts, which will allow the XM to replenish its 26-kWh battery more quickly. BMW says production for the 2026 model year will kick off at its Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant in August, with pricing to be revealed later. The 2025 XM Label starts at $186,175, and we expect the price to rise only slightly for the 2026 model year.
