Facelift BMW XM range revealed with streamlined solitary model

The Citizen12-06-2025

Previous base model departs, leaving the renamed Label as the sole derivative without any powerplant changes.
Introduced two years ago as the M division's powerful product ever, BMW has restructured the controversial XM range by making the previously known Red Label the only variant as part of the SUV's first mid-life overhaul.
New outside
Now known simply as the XM Label, the updates are minor and externally consist of standard 22-inch M light alloy wheels in place of the previous 21-inch wheels, the removal of the red accents, new, optional, 23-inch gloss black M light alloy wheels and a gloss black finish for the kidney grille surround.

Subtle changes inside

Inside, the revisions are even more subtle and limited to a new black Merino leather upholstery option with Coffee Brown detailing, or Silverstone Merino leather with black detailing.
Same powerplant, quicker charging
Up front, BMW has upgraded the 25.7-kWh battery pack to now support AC charging up to 11 kW instead of the previous 7.4 kW.
No uptakes in power have, however, been achieved with the electric motor still developing 145kW/280Nm and the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 430kW/750Nm.

Combined, the XM Label outputs 550kW/1 000Nm that goes to all four wheels via the eight-speed Steptronic that acts as housing for the electric motor.
The claimed all-electric range is 76 km and the top speed once again limited to 250 km/h or 290 km/h with the optional M Driver's Package selected. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes 3.8 seconds.
In South Africa soon
Confirmed to make its official public debut at this weekend's 24 Hours of Le Mans, the XM Label has been approved for South Africa, though an official date of reveal hasn't yet been made.
While pricing wasn't disclosed either, the German-market variant will start at €183 400, which amounts to a directly converted R3 767 919.
Locally, pricing for the Red Label currently starts at R3 650 000, thus expect a price increase once sales of the 'new' Label commence.

The Audi RS Q8 is a high-riding supercar

With the hammer dropped all the way, the 4.0l motor spits out 471kW/850Nm, with a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.6 seconds. We have tested faster from Audi — the electric RS E-Tron GT comes to mind. But this offers a different sensation entirely. Old school and visceral, the mechanical symphony that happens as pedal depression translates to pace is something to savour. On a hard launch, you can feel the Quattro system gripping as it sends the hefty RS Q8 from rest and towards road-shredding higher velocities. To say accessing its full performance capabilities is foolproof might be an overstatement because even with its leech-like all-wheel drive system, the RS Q8 could be a lethal weapon in overzealous hands. One needs full sensitisation to its weight and deceptively brutal acceleration before getting into a proper, comfortable rhythm of dynamic driving. A tag of R3,265,100 is what the model goes for, before options and individualisation. This includes a five-year/100,000km maintenance plan. For reference, the Lamborghini Urus begins at R4,875,000 while the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT comes in at R4,506,000.

Driving impressions: Why the BMW X3 20d xDrive M Sport stands out in the SUV market

The BMW X3 is a crucial mid-sized SUV for the Munich-based company and remains one of its top sellers and is also the most popular model in South Africa. Recently I was on the N1 driving to Johannesburg when I passed three trucks carrying proudly made in South Africa vehicles. There's a tinge of pride knowing that a load of Nissan Navaras, Ford Rangers and BMW X3s are on their way to foreign lands, the fact that they're on trucks and not on rail for reasons we all know notwithstanding. I happened to be testing the BMW X3 20d xDrive M Sport at the time and knew that the new owners would be well pleased. The X3 is a crucial mid-sized SUV for the Munich-based company and remains one of its top sellers and is also the most popular model in South Africa. With its overall refinement it's not difficult to understand why. Exterior Now in its fourth iteration and first launched in 2003, it has aged well, and as the generations have progressed, it has grown considerably in size, so much so that a friend that had the second generation years ago hardly recognised it. It's taken a while, but the large distinctive kidney grill seems to be less polarising than when it first saw the light and it actually suits this year's Car of the Year. Because it's such an important model for the brand they have tinkered too much with the exterior. It now sports more angular lines and what BMW calls a monolithic appearance and while personally I prefer the previous generation's look, the new X3 is one of those cars that look better in the metal than in pictures. The rear sports a flush-mounted window with a long roof spoiler and under the flared wheel arches it stands on attractive 19-inch alloys. Engine The BMW four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine stands out as one of the best motors ever made and in the X3 produces 145kW and 400Nm coupled to a 48V mild hybrid system adding an additional 8kW and 25Nm for short bursts. It's connected to an eight-speed Steptronic transmission driving all four wheels. Interior As you would expect, the interior is very much a glass screen and premium affair with an abundance of illuminated surfaces. While it looks pretty cool, especially at night in the different driving modes, I can't help thinking that it comes across as one of those flashing disco-type speakers sold at the China Mall. I mean, is a flashing red light bar across the dash when the hazard lights are in use really necessary? Regular touchpoints and plastic bits are covered with recycled materials which look like they'll stand the test of time, especially since the X3 is likely to be a family's main mode of transport. The door-mounted ventilation controls, however, felt flimsy and spoiled an otherwise well cocooned and solid cabin. Fitted with BMW Operating System 9, the infotainment system though is still a bit clumsy and not particularly user friendly. It's not the most intuitive system with most settings including the air conditioning requiring some form of double tap to get to the right menu. It's mitigated somewhat with the iDrive system with QuickSelect that allows functions to be activated directly without having to enter a submenu or using your voice to adjust certain functions. Fortunately the volume can still be adjusted via a dial.

Polestar secures $200m investment from Geely's Li Shufu

Polestar said on Monday it had secured a $200m (R3,565,800,000) equity investment from major shareholder PSD Investment, a company controlled by Geely Holding founder Li Shufu. The Swedish EV maker will sell more than 190-million Class A American depositary shares (ADS) to PSD Investment, which will hold 44% of Polestar. After the transaction Li Shufu will hold a total of 66% in Polestar through PSD investment and the Swedish subsidiary of Geely. The Swedish carmaker has faced challenges in boosting demand for its vehicles amid a softer market and intense competition, and like many other EV makers had a need for further funding. While the carmaker has received loans froms banks in the past year, further financial support from Geely and Li Shufu, also known as Eric Li, have not materialized. The transaction will also reduce Volvo Cars' stake in Polestar to 16% from 18%, after the Swedish carmaker cut its holding and halted financial support last year amid analyst criticism over the burden Polestar placed on its resources. Polestar said the private investment in public equity transaction is intended to provide working capital and fund general corporate purposes. The company said before the closing of the transaction PSD Investment plans to convert 20-million of its Class B ADS shares into Class A ADS shares in a bid to keep its total voting power in Polestar below 50%.
