Sabrina Carpenter is the latest victim of cancellation — thanks to Gen Z's turbocharged purity culture
I'll admit, I did have a moment's pause when I saw Carpenter live at London's O2 earlier this year. Not because her performance was anything less than completely stellar (as it was at The Brits, and at Primavera Sound — yes, I'm obsessed with her). But there were an awful lot of literal children in the audience for a multi-hour set that is mainly about boys and shagging. She — infamously — debuts a new sex position each night for her song Juno, and gets the audience to crouch down and sing 'Adore me, hold me and explore me/ I'm so f******' horny'.

Sabrina Carpenter Considered Banning Phones During Her Concerts
If you've ever been to a Sabrina Carpenter show, then you already know it's full of Short n' Sweet treats. So much so, you might want to record her next 'Juno' position or have the entirety of 'Tornado Warnings' on your camera roll to soundtrack your next crash out. Either way, snapping those memories might not even be an option during her concerts in the future. During an interview with Rolling Stone, the 'Manchild' singer got candid about playing live shows and how it feels to see a crowd full of phone cameras aimed at her. Of course, she's no stranger to lenses as a Grammy-winning pop star, but she revealed that she might consider banning phones from her shows at some point in her blossoming career, as artists like Madonna, Adele, and Bob Dylan have done in the past. 'This will honestly piss off my fans, but absolutely,' Sabrina admitted when asked if she'd ban phones. 'Because I went to see Silk Sonic in Vegas, and they locked my phone. I've never had a better experience at a concert. I genuinely felt like I was back in the Seventies — wasn't alive. Genuinely felt like I was there. Everyone's singing, dancing, looking at each other, and laughing. It really, really just felt so beautiful.' At the end of the day, the 'Bed Chem' artist understands why she's faced with a crowd full of phones and 'doesn't blame' her fans for wanting to preserve the moment. 'I've grown up in the age of people having iPhones at shows,' she continued. 'It unfortunately feels super normal to me. I can't blame people for wanting to have memories. But depending on how long I want to be touring, and what age I am, girl, take those phones away.' She then playfully added, 'You cannot zoom in on my face. Right now, my skin is soft and supple. It's fine. Do not zoom in on me when I'm 80 years old up there.'

Sabrina Carpenter Claps Back at Critics, Shuts Down ‘Lolita' Inspiration Rumors
Sabrina Carpenter is no stranger to a little bit of controversy. The singer-songwriter has been central to a few headlines, from her Man's Best Friend album cover to her harmless 'Juno' positions on her Short n' Sweet Tour. Not to mention, she's ruffled a few feathers with her retro-inspired aesthetic and openly sexual nature. The latest critic to come for Sabrina shared screenshots of her September 2024 W magazine cover shoot next to a still from the 1997 film adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita, which follows the story of a grown man who grooms and sexually pursues a minor. Obviously, the multihyphenate was having none of that when she took to the comments section of his TikTok to defend her artistry and vision. 'I've never seen this movie. It's never been on my mood board and never would be,' the 'Manchild' singer wrote. Similarly, she clapped back at another person who asked, 'Does she have a personality outside of sex?' 'Girl yes and it is goooooood,' Sabrina responded with her signature dry humor. The Grammy winner has been dodging such accusations since she rose to fame in 2022 with the release of her album, emails i can't send, and her hilariously iconic 'Nonsense' outros, which she'd customize for each city on tour with new innuendos. In Febraury 2024, she told Cosmopolitan that while people found her to be 'obnoxiously horny,' she was actually learning about her sexuality in real time. 'It's funny too, writing the outros, because I feel like I've learned a lot more about sexuality through writing those than people think,' she shared at the time. 'I think people think I'm just obnoxiously horny, when in reality, writing them comes from the ability to not be fearful of your sexuality as opposed to just not being able to put it down.' More recently, she opened up about criticism surrounding the sex positions she playfully hits during her live performances of 'Juno'—a song about, well, sex. 'It's always so funny to me when people complain,' Sabrina told Rolling Stone. 'They're like, 'All she does is sing about this.' But those are the songs that you've made popular. Clearly you love sex. You're obsessed with it. It's in my show.' 'There's so many more moments than the 'Juno' positions, but those are the ones you post every night and comment on. I can't control that,' she continued. 'If you come to the show, you'll [also] hear the ballads, you'll hear the more introspective numbers. I find irony and humor in all of that, because it seems to be a recurring theme. I'm not upset about it, other than I feel mad pressure to be funny sometimes.'

So when X user @esotericsoul777 asked 'Does she have a personality outside of sex?' the 26-year-old pop star replied on Monday: 'Girl yes and it is goooooood.' Sabrina has also received criticism for the simulated sex positions she demonstrates onstage while performing her song Juno during her Short n' Sweet Tour. 'It's always so funny to me when people complain,' Carpenter told Rolling Stone last Thursday. 'They're like, "All she does is sing about this." But those are the songs that you've made popular. Clearly you love sex. You're obsessed with it. It's in my show.' The two-time Grammy winner continued: 'There's so many more moments than the Juno positions, but those are the ones you post every night and comment on. I can't control that. I'm not upset about it, other than I feel mad pressure to be funny sometimes,' Sabrina noted. On Monday, Carpenter celebrated her new single Manchild debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. 'I love ya @jackantonoff @amyallen!' the Versace brand ambassador - who boasts 105.3M social media followers - thanked her co-producers. 'I can't tell you how much this means to me! This song makes me so happy. Thank you eternally for listening.' Sabrina's previous single Please Please Please also reached the No. 1 spot, while her single Taste peaked at No. 2 and Espresso peaked at No. 3. Carpenter is next scheduled to resume her $33.2M-grossing, 72-date Short n' Sweet Tour on July 5-6 at Hyde Park in London. Carpenter told Rolling Stone last Thursday: 'It's always so funny to me when people complain. They're like, "All she does is sing about this." But those are the songs that you've made popular. Clearly you love sex. You're obsessed with it. It's in my show' (pictured in November) The two-time Grammy winner continued: 'There's so many more moments than the Juno positions, but those are the ones you post every night and comment on. I can't control that. If you come to the show, you'll [also] hear the ballads, you'll hear the more introspective numbers' (pictured May 5) The Pennsylvania-born blonde bombshell has been a singer for the last decade, but her career got a major boost in 2023 while serving opening duties for Taylor Swift. Sabrina - who gets 68.7M monthly listeners on Spotify - originally taught herself how to play piano and guitar with YouTube tutorials. Carpenter had a nepo-baby leg up in the industry thanks to her famous aunt Nancy Cartwright, who has been the voice of 10-year-old troublemaker Bart Simpson since 1987 on The Tracey Ullman Show followed by Fox's long-running animated sitcom The Simpsons.
