Sabrina Carpenter Claps Back at Critics, Shuts Down ‘Lolita' Inspiration Rumors
Sabrina Carpenter is no stranger to a little bit of controversy. The singer-songwriter has been central to a few headlines, from her Man's Best Friend album cover to her harmless 'Juno' positions on her Short n' Sweet Tour. Not to mention, she's ruffled a few feathers with her retro-inspired aesthetic and openly sexual nature.
The latest critic to come for Sabrina shared screenshots of her September 2024 W magazine cover shoot next to a still from the 1997 film adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita, which follows the story of a grown man who grooms and sexually pursues a minor. Obviously, the multihyphenate was having none of that when she took to the comments section of his TikTok to defend her artistry and vision.
'I've never seen this movie. It's never been on my mood board and never would be,' the 'Manchild' singer wrote.
Similarly, she clapped back at another person who asked, 'Does she have a personality outside of sex?'
'Girl yes and it is goooooood,' Sabrina responded with her signature dry humor.
The Grammy winner has been dodging such accusations since she rose to fame in 2022 with the release of her album, emails i can't send, and her hilariously iconic 'Nonsense' outros, which she'd customize for each city on tour with new innuendos. In Febraury 2024, she told Cosmopolitan that while people found her to be 'obnoxiously horny,' she was actually learning about her sexuality in real time.
'It's funny too, writing the outros, because I feel like I've learned a lot more about sexuality through writing those than people think,' she shared at the time. 'I think people think I'm just obnoxiously horny, when in reality, writing them comes from the ability to not be fearful of your sexuality as opposed to just not being able to put it down.'
More recently, she opened up about criticism surrounding the sex positions she playfully hits during her live performances of 'Juno'—a song about, well, sex.
'It's always so funny to me when people complain,' Sabrina told Rolling Stone. 'They're like, 'All she does is sing about this.' But those are the songs that you've made popular. Clearly you love sex. You're obsessed with it. It's in my show.'
'There's so many more moments than the 'Juno' positions, but those are the ones you post every night and comment on. I can't control that,' she continued. 'If you come to the show, you'll [also] hear the ballads, you'll hear the more introspective numbers. I find irony and humor in all of that, because it seems to be a recurring theme. I'm not upset about it, other than I feel mad pressure to be funny sometimes.'

When 8th Note Press launched in the summer of 2023, the small publisher had a big advantage over other new presses. It was started by the Chinese technology company ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, the wildly popular social media platform where viral endorsements can transform books into best sellers overnight. That was not enough, it seems, to build a successful publishing business. In late May, 8th Note Press began informing writers that it was shutting down and returning publication rights to the authors. News of the press's demise, which was reported earlier by the The Bookseller, came as a shock to authors who were swayed by the possibility that 8th Note could help engineer best sellers with elaborate marketing campaigns on TikTok. Instead, 8th Note has started taking down digital editions of their books, effectively unpublishing them. The literary agent Mark Gottlieb, who sold the debut novel 'To Have and Have More' to 8th Note, said the company was doing 'irreparable damage' to its authors by shutting down so haphazardly. While publishing imprints frequently come and go, the books and authors they publish are usually moved elsewhere within the parent company, rather than being taken out of circulation entirely. If a book is published then quickly disappears, it can be difficult to resell it to another publisher, Gottlieb said. 'They're wrecking careers in the process of doing this,' he said of 8th Note. 'If you're an author and this is your first book, what the history is going to show is that your book published and quickly went out of print.' 8th Note's precipitous fall was surprising, given its parent company's vast resources and reach. Just last year, the press seemed poised to expand. Last October, its executives announced a partnership with the publisher Zando to put out print editions of its books and distribute them to physical bookstores. The plan was to release 10 to 15 titles a year, with a focus on romance, romantasy and young adult fiction. In the spiritual sequel to his legendary 2004 Victoria's Secret commercial, Bob Dylan has provided narration for a new trailer announcing Machine Gun Kelly's next album, Lost Americana. 'Lost Americana is a personal excavation of the American dream — a journey to find what's been lost,' Dylan drawls in the short clip. He goes on to describe the album as 'a love letter to those who seek to rediscover' and 'a sonic map of forgotten places, a tribute to the spirit of reinvention, and a quest to reclaim the essence of American freedom.' Machine Gun Kelly has officially confirmed the obvious — that it was Bob Dylan narrating his recent album announcement trailer. But in Dylan-esque fashion, MGK declined to give a straight answer as to how the collaboration came about. When asked point blank about Dylan's cameo on Today, MGK quipped, 'A magician never reveals his secrets.' He then continued with something resembling an answer, but still clearly jokey: 'Pure desperation. Just knocking on his door relentlessly, not going away.'
