Drunk driving: 14 drivers of school vehicles caught drunk at wheel in Hyderabad traffic police crackdown

HYDERABAD: In a surprise inspection targeting school transport vehicles at 34 junctions across the city on Wednesday, the Hyderabad traffic police caught 14 drivers for drunk driving. Among them was an auto-rickshaw driver with a staggering blood alcohol content (BAC) of 276 mg/100 ml, far exceeding the permissible limit of 30 mg. Police checked around 350 vehicles, seizing 14 of them, including four school-operated buses. The remaining offenders were operating auto-rickshaws and an Omni van. All the accused have been booked under the Motor Vehicles Act. In response, joint commissioner of police (traffic) Joel Davis on Thursday urged school authorities to equip themselves with breath analyzers to check drivers ferrying students. He was addressing the managements of 3,218 schools during an event on school safety event, titled 'School Management and Stake Holders Meeting on Students Safety', organised by the traffic police. 'It's a shocking number. I was taken aback when I found out,' Davis said. 'This is the first time we've conducted checks specifically on school transport vehicles,' added deputy commissioner of police (traffic-I) Rahul Hegde. 'The special drive was carried out late in the afternoon, after school hours. Since the academic year began just a week ago, we decided to target drivers responsible for transporting children.' Despite four of the accused being drivers employed directly by schools, traffic police have so far refrained from taking action against the institutions themselves. 'Unless an accident occurs, we won't hold schools accountable,' Hegde said. 'But it is their duty to ensure they hire only clean drivers, as we're talking about the safety of children.' The traffic police urged school managements to take greater responsibility in driver recruitment and appealed to parents to exercise caution when choosing auto-rickshaw drivers. 'The special drive against school transport offenders will continue,' the DCP added. While speaking about the road safety, traffic police said that over 9 million vehicles operate daily in Hyderabad, and only 3,000 personnel are available to manage the city's traffic. Police stated that 8 students have lost their lives in various road accidents between 2023 and 2025.

Hyderabad traffic woes: Cops push carpooling for schools; parents urged, safety steps stressed

HYDERABAD: Traffic police urged parents and schools to use a carpooling app to avoid traffi c congestion near schools. Speaking at an event on road safety for schools titled 'School management and stakeholders' meeting on students' safety',organised by the Hyderabad traffi c police on Thursday, joint commissioner of police Joel Davis noted that nearly 19 lakh vehicles ply on the city roads daily. 'Almost 500-1000 vehicles are used every day to transport children to schools. There is only so much that we can do to widen the roads, so reducing the number of vehicles on the road will help a great deal,' the joint commissioner said. Most carpooling apps allow customers to tailor their rides according to their criteria. Innovative solutions The drivers are verifi ed, and parents can choose if they want a male or female driver, and can track the status of their rides online. Rides are also usually cheaper than ride hailing apps. 'It's a useful app. If schools are willing to avail its services, the traffi c police will help the schools in setting it up,' the joint commissioner said. He also said such an initiative will help schools keep a track on the number of registered vehicles on the app. 'That way, parents will be assured that their carpool driver is genuine,' the joint commissioner added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like USDJPY đang đi lên không? 'There have been instances wherein children become victims of road accidents after they were hit by their school bus. This happened when the children were crossing the road after disembarking the bus. There is a need to create road awareness among school children. The safety of the children during the transport has to be the school management's responsibility,' Rohini said.

Police investigating 'disgusting' display of 'no black', 'no Muslim' votes banners

Victoria Police is investigating after several groups dressed in all black were seen on overpasses along Melbourne's Monash Freeway holding racist and Islamophobic banners. Police said they had been alerted to offensive slogans being displayed at several locations along the freeway just after 9.30am on Saturday — the day of . A witness provided SBS News photos of several of the banners which read: "No black votes should count; No Muslim votes should count; and Only Aussie votes should count. Only Australian citizens aged 18 and over can vote in state and federal elections. Former Australian Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers in 2019 said voter fraud in Australia is negligible. He told a parliamentary committee in 2019 that it was "by and large a very small problem". The witness, who asked to remain anonymous, described the scenes as "disgusting". "Imagine having a little Asian child [or] a Muslim child in the back of a seat just driving with your family on a Saturday morning, and then you just see this racism," the witness, who is an Australian Muslim, told SBS News. "It's just disturbing." The witness said she saw about 30 people spread across three overpasses. A Victoria Police spokesperson told SBS News in a statement: "Police have been told people were seen congregating on several foot and vehicle overpass bridges in the vicinity of Huntingdale Road. "It is believed the people involved, who were described as wearing all black and face coverings, were holding banners which displayed offensive slogans." An alt-right media outlet that promotes white supremacist ideologies published a story on the demonstration, reporting that two dozen members of neo-Nazi group, the National Socialist Network (NSN), had been holding the signs. The article quoted NSN figure Joel Davis, but he did not make any statement as to whether he or the NSN were involved. An account appearing to belong to Davis shared the article on the encrypted messaging app Telegram. Victoria Police could not confirm whether the NSN was responsible, telling SBS News its investigation was ongoing. On Thursday, Victoria Police said it was investigating flyers authorised by the NSN that were delivered to Jewish households in Melbourne. In the past week, some other flyers titled "Flood Australia with Indians" were also seen, which were "authorised by Joel Davis, National Socialist Network".
