14 drivers of school vehicles caught drunk at wheel in traffic police crackdown in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: In a surprise inspection targeting school transport vehicles at 34 junctions across the city on Wednesday, the Hyderabad traffic police caught 14 drivers for drunk driving.
Among them was an auto-rickshaw driver with a staggering blood alcohol content (BAC) of 276 mg/100 ml, far exceeding the permissible limit of 30 mg.
Police checked around 350 vehicles, seizing 14 of them, including four school-operated buses. The remaining offenders were operating auto-rickshaws and an Omni van. All the accused have been booked under the Motor Vehicles Act.
In response, joint commissioner of police (traffic) Joel Davis on Thursday urged school authorities to equip themselves with breath analyzers to check drivers ferrying students.
He was addressing the managements of 3,218 schools during an event on school safety event, titled 'School Management and Stake Holders Meeting on Students Safety', organised by the traffic police. 'It's a shocking number. I was taken aback when I found out,' Davis said.
'This is the first time we've conducted checks specifically on school transport vehicles,' added deputy commissioner of police (traffic-I) Rahul Hegde.

'The special drive was carried out late in the afternoon, after school hours. Since the academic year began just a week ago, we decided to target drivers responsible for transporting children.'
Despite four of the accused being drivers employed directly by schools, traffic police have so far refrained from taking action against the institutions themselves. 'Unless an accident occurs, we won't hold schools accountable,' Hegde said.
'But it is their duty to ensure they hire only clean drivers, as we're talking about the safety of children.'
The traffic police urged school managements to take greater responsibility in driver recruitment and appealed to parents to exercise caution when choosing auto-rickshaw drivers. 'The special drive against school transport offenders will continue,' the DCP added.
While speaking about the road safety, traffic police said that over 9 million vehicles operate daily in Hyderabad, and only 3,000 personnel are available to manage the city's traffic. Police stated that 8 students have lost their lives in various road accidents between 2023 and 2025.

Gangster wanted for couple's murder killed in Firozabad police encounter
In Firozabad, a notorious gangster named Raju Khan, wanted for murder and robbery, was killed in an encounter with the police early Friday. SSP Saurabh Dixit reported that Khan opened fire on officers after being cornered, leading to retaliatory fire. AGRA: A notorious gangster, wanted in murder and robbery cases, was killed in an encounter with the police in the Firozabad district in the early hours of Friday. Police said the encounter happened at a secluded place under the jurisdiction of Shikohabad Police Station, following which the accused, Raju Khan , was taken to the community health centre in Shikohabad, where he was declared dead by the doctors. SSP Firozabad Saurabh Dixit told TOI that police received an alert from an informer that Khan, wanted in murder and robbery cases, was in the area. "Police surrounded the criminal near Nova Factory and asked him to surrender, but he started firing indiscriminately at the cops. In the retaliatory fire, Khan got injured and died during treatment. We have alerted the NHRC about the incident and requested DM Firozabad to launch a probe into it," SSP Dixit said. Sharing details about Khan's criminal record, Dixit further added that he was wanted in as many as five cases of murder, loot, and attempt to murder. Khan used to target elderly people, and he was currently living in Agra. He would travel from Agra to commit the crimes, police said, adding that he was identified after monitoring footage from 200 CCTV cameras. DIG Agra had announced a reward of Rs 50,000, and the SSP had announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for Raju Khan's arrest. After the incident, an illegal .32-bore firearm, eight live bullets, and 12 bullet shells were recovered from his possession, police said. As per Uttar Pradesh Police data, in the last eight years, the state reported 14,741 encounters, leading to the arrest of 30,293 criminals, while 234 criminals were gunned down.

Security breach at Secunderabad's MCEME; man impersonates IAF officer to enter campus, 4 booked for trespass, cheating & forgery
HYDERABAD: In what can be a serious breach of military security, the Trimulgherry police have registered a criminal case against four individuals, including two women, for unauthorised entry into the Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME), Secunderabad. One of the accused allegedly impersonated an Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander to gain access to the restricted area, raising major concerns over internal security protocols. The case was registered on Thursday based on a complaint filed by an Army officer. Police identified the accused as Rakesh Kumar Naresh Rai, Ashish Kumar, Aaliya Abbashi, and Nagma Bano Mahmood Ali. They have been booked under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including section 61(2) (criminal conspiracy), section 329(3) (trespass), section 319(2) (cheating), and section 340(2) (use of forged documents). According to the FIR, the four individuals entered MCEME on Thursday through MI Techno Chowk Gate allegedly without valid authorisation. Rakesh Kumar reportedly impersonated a Wing Commander and escorted other three inside the campus.
