Drunk driving: 14 drivers of school vehicles caught drunk at wheel in Hyderabad traffic police crackdown
HYDERABAD: In a surprise inspection targeting school transport vehicles at 34 junctions across the city on Wednesday, the Hyderabad traffic police caught 14 drivers for drunk driving.
Among them was an auto-rickshaw driver with a staggering blood alcohol content (BAC) of 276 mg/100 ml, far exceeding the permissible limit of 30 mg.
Police checked around 350 vehicles, seizing 14 of them, including four school-operated buses. The remaining offenders were operating auto-rickshaws and an Omni van. All the accused have been booked under the Motor Vehicles Act.
In response, joint commissioner of police (traffic) Joel Davis on Thursday urged school authorities to equip themselves with breath analyzers to check drivers ferrying students.
He was addressing the managements of 3,218 schools during an event on school safety event, titled 'School Management and Stake Holders Meeting on Students Safety', organised by the traffic police. 'It's a shocking number. I was taken aback when I found out,' Davis said.
'This is the first time we've conducted checks specifically on school transport vehicles,' added deputy commissioner of police (traffic-I) Rahul Hegde.
'The special drive was carried out late in the afternoon, after school hours. Since the academic year began just a week ago, we decided to target drivers responsible for transporting children.'
Despite four of the accused being drivers employed directly by schools, traffic police have so far refrained from taking action against the institutions themselves. 'Unless an accident occurs, we won't hold schools accountable,' Hegde said.
'But it is their duty to ensure they hire only clean drivers, as we're talking about the safety of children.'
The traffic police urged school managements to take greater responsibility in driver recruitment and appealed to parents to exercise caution when choosing auto-rickshaw drivers. 'The special drive against school transport offenders will continue,' the DCP added.
While speaking about the road safety, traffic police said that over 9 million vehicles operate daily in Hyderabad, and only 3,000 personnel are available to manage the city's traffic. Police stated that 8 students have lost their lives in various road accidents between 2023 and 2025.

Delhi Police apologises for wrongly identifying journalist as suspect in criminal case
NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police has apologised for wrongly identifying a Noida-based journalist as a suspect in a criminal case, an official said on Friday. A team from the Prem Nagar Police Station in outer Delhi, comprising a sub-inspector, a head constable and a constable, was investigating a case registered under sections 318(4) (cheating involving valuable security) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, he said. "The team was tracking the location of the accused identified as Rahul, a resident of Bahadurgarh, through his mobile phone," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam said. It led the team to a petrol pump in Sector 38, Noida, where they found a man in a car with his wife, whose description matched the suspect, he added. "When the team asked him to produce an identity card, he reportedly refused and entered into an argument. The man later identified himself as Rahul Shah, a Noida-based journalist," the DCP said. Upon realising the mistake, the police team apologised and returned to the police station. "No misbehaviour or force was used during the incident," the officer said. The confusion was due to the similarity in facial features and the name, the DCP said, adding, "As soon as the team confirmed that the individual was not the accused, it expressed regret and disengaged from the interaction." An internal note has been made regarding the incident, and no further action is being pursued.

Cyber fraud syndicate linked to China busted, 3 arrested
NEW DELHI: Three men were arrested in connection with a cyber fraud syndicate operating across states and channelling cheated money to China via USDT and cryptocurrency platforms, police said on Thursday. The accused have been identified as Mahender Singh Rajawat (25), who supplied bank accounts and coordinated with one Sarvesh for USDT transactions; Ariph Khan (25), who was in contact with Chinese handlers, provided accounts for transactions, and coordinated withdrawals and crypto conversions; and Laxmi Narayan Vaishy (23), who facilitated the laundering of fraud proceeds. 'A complaint was lodged by K. Kant, who mentioned that he was contacted via social media with a proposition to earn money by posting positive reviews for hotels and restaurants online. Initially, the complainant received small payments for such tasks,' a senior police officer said. However, he was soon deceived into transferring over Rs 15.8 lakh under various false pretences, such as welfare tasks, account unfreezing, and credit score improvement. 'Though the complainant had deleted the contact number and the fraudulent link, the team conducted a detailed technical analysis and tracked the money trail, leading to multiple raids in Jaipur, Ajmer, and nearby regions. Later, accused Rajawat was nabbed. He revealed the roles of co-accused Ariph Khan and Laxmi Narayan Vaishy. Multiple raids were carried out at their hideouts, and both Khan and Vaishy were apprehended,' Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel said. Six smartphones, calling devices, and SIM cards used in the fraud were recovered. The devices contained chats and contact details of the Chinese handlers, along with records of cryptocurrency transactions via USDT. 'It was revealed that Khan and Vaishy were in direct contact with a Chinese national operating via Telegram from outside India. They provided multiple bank accounts for laundering the proceeds of crime. The cheated money was deposited into these accounts, withdrawn within 20 minutes, and converted to USDT (cryptocurrency),' the DCP said.

A National Students Union of India (NSUI) leader and his friend were killed in a high-speed crash that occurred on National Highway 66 in Mangaluru city in the early hours of June 18. The accident is alleged to have been caused by drunk driving, the police said. Om Shree Poojary, 24, the NSUI vice-president for the Dakshina Kannada region, was a front-seat passenger in the car driven by his friend Aman Rao, 22. The car was proceeding at a speed beyond 100 km per hour when Rao lost control of the vehicle, and it hit the wall of a narrow bridge on the highway at 1.30 am on June 18, the police said. The two men succumbed to injuries at a local hospital in Mangaluru. Among the three other passengers who were in the car, one person, Ashish, 23, suffered grievous injuries while two others — Vansh Devadiga, 22, and Jerry, a foreign passport holder — suffered minor injuries. The Mangaluru traffic police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving on the basis of a complaint filed by Devadiga. According to the police, the youths were partying on the night of June 17 and were returning to Mangaluru City from the Talapady region of Dakshina Kannada when the accident occurred near the Dream Deal Centre at Jappinamogaru in Mangaluru city. 'We are deeply saddened by the passing of Om Shree Pujari, a dedicated leader and pillar of our student movement. His commitment to students' rights and justice will always be remembered,' the NSUI said in a statement on social media regarding the death of its leader. Following the accident, the Mangaluru city police have issued a warning against speeding on roads and drunk driving. It stated that 75 deaths have occurred due to road traffic accidents in the city this year. 'Driving under the influence of alcohol significantly increases the risk of accidents, potentially resulting in fatalities and lifelong trauma for families. As per Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, those caught for drink-driving may be fined up to Rs 10,000. Overspeeding, a leading cause of road accidents, is punishable under Section 183 of the Act. Fines range from Rs 1,000 for LMVs to Rs 2,000 for HMVs,' the Mangaluru police said in a statement. Mangaluru Police Commissioner C H Sudhir Reddy said on June 18 that out of the 75 road accident deaths, 70 were caused due to rash and negligent driving. In the majority of cases victims were under the age of 25, he said. 'This is a serious concern,' Reddy stated.
