What's cooking with Perhebat: Sewing and brewing as soldiers return to civilian life
KLUANG: With her military career 'sewn up' including a stint with the Malaysian Battalion Team (Malbatt) in Lebanon, this tough lady wishes to exchange the gun for needle-and-thread thus continuing the legacy of her seamstress-mother once she returns to civilian life.
Senior Warrant Officer (Rtd) P. Maygala, 41, who served in the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) until her retirement last year (2024), said her feminine intuition persuaded her to study business management as a second career in the Transition Training programme, organised by the Ex-Servicemen Affairs Corporation (Perhebat).
'Many people ask me why tailoring and not other fields such as security ... my answer is simply that I am a woman, a mother, so the feminine spirit prevails despite the military discipline. Even before joining the army, I helped my mother at her tailoring shop,' she told Bernama after the Perhebat Certificate presentation here today by Commander of the RMN Reserve Force, First Admiral Azhar Adam.
Maygala, who has served for 21 years including joining the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping force, thanked the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) and Perhebat.
'Having just graduated and receiving the certificate today, I will join my mother's clothing business in Johor Bahru by the end of the year,' she said.
Another Perhebat graduate, Corporal (Rtd) Helmi Mohd Balawi, 43, said he would open a coffee-based cafe armed with the knowledge he gained from Perhebat 'sTransition Training.
With his simmering interest in coffee, he wants to have a meaningful life while generating income after retirement.
'I served in the Johor Military Force (JMF) for 26 years, so I have no other skills. That's why I joined the Perhebat's Transition Training so that I can adapt to civilian life,' he said.
Meanwhile, First Admiral Azhar said the MAF and Perhebat would increase their cooperation with the private sector to provide more job opportunities.
According to him, eight new memorandums of understanding and agreements have been signed by the MAF in 2025 to support human capital development of MAF retirees and veterans to explore new fields.
'Besides teaching business to produce entrepreneurs, we are shifting our focus to the field of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of military assets with specialised training.
'This Transition Training has churned out a total of 3,473 MAF retirees while five JMF retirees have received certificates. A total of 514 personnel and veterans have also been awarded the Malaysian Skills Diploma,' Azhar added.

49 MAF veterans secure second careers in high-tech industry
MELAKA: Forty-nine Armed Forces (MAF) veterans have successfully secured second careers in the high-technology industry through the Veteran MyWIRA programme launched in January last year. Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari said this marks a significant achievement in ensuring that the veterans not only secure employment but also earn a better income after completing their service. 'They are now working in the electrical and electronics industry in Penang with a starting salary of RM2,900. 'This programme helps ensure a more comfortable livelihood, considering that many veterans fall into the B40 group as they lose about half of their income after retiring,' he told a press conference after officiating the Pingat Jasa Malaysia (PJM) award ceremony at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh, here today. Adly said the ministry is committed to ensuring at least 70 per cent of MAF veterans secure a post-retirement career through various initiatives including collaboration with the Ministry of Human Resources and higher learning institutions. 'In addition to programmes that empower veterans in entrepreneurship and ensuring that the defence industry involves at least 30 per cent of veterans, we have also launched a Second Career campaign through work-based learning where the veterans' previous careers and expertise are given academic recognition. 'For this purpose, we are working with several higher learning institutions such as Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) to confer them with certificates or diplomas so that these credentials can be used to pursue a second career and their experience can be formally recognised,' Adly said. Earlier at the event, 1,000 MAF veterans from Melaka and Negeri Sembilan were awarded Pingat Jasa Malaysia (PJM), a medal bestowed in recognition of their valour and sacrifices in fulfilling their duty to the nation. As of March this year, a total of 48,346 MAF veterans have been conferred the PJM since it was coordinated by the Armed Forces Veterans Affairs Department (JHEV) in March 2004.

Kota Kinabalu: The Ministry of Defence remains committed to strengthening the Armed Forces Veterans Affairs Corporation (Perhebat) as a key platform for facilitating second careers for veterans, in line with the Defence White Paper (KPP), which emphasises human capital development and the socio-economic wellbeing of Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) retirees and veterans. It reaffirmed its goal to transform Perhebat into an effective enabler and connector for veterans seeking new career paths. Advertisement 'Perhebat is actively expanding industrial collaborations across various sectors to create more quality employment opportunities for veterans. It is also working to increase training funds through partnerships with the corporate sector to support human capital development initiatives for future retirees and veterans,' it said. Additionally, Perhebat is exploring new areas such as Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) of military assets, aimed at offering both training and job placement opportunities for targeted groups. On June 3, Perhebat signed eight memoranda and notes of understanding (MoUs & NoUs) with industry partners to further support veterans and future retirees in employment placement, entrepreneurship and training programmes. The signatories include Boustead Petroleum Marketing (BHPetrol), Johor Royal Service Corps (Askar Timbalan Setia Negeri Johor), Maxis Broadband, TAB Security, Kamatech Automotive & Engineering, Hexide Engineering, AMS Caddy Academy and Nur Lembah Pangsun Eco Resort. As part of the nationwide Certificate Award Ceremony, 3,473 MAF personnel successfully completed Transition Training. Additionally, 514 personnel and veterans were awarded the Malaysian Skills Diploma under the Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) initiative. The RPEL programme, implemented in collaboration with the Department of Skills Development (JPK), aims to provide value-added opportunities for personnel and veterans to pursue higher education and enhance their employability. Through this initiative, participants can earn the Malaysian Skills Certificate, Malaysian Skills Diploma and Advanced Malaysian Skills Diploma. Since its inception in 2017, a total of 5,793 MAF personnel and veterans have received the Malaysian Skills Diploma. RPEL is a certification programme that formally recognises the experience, skills and achievements gained by personnel and veterans during their service, allowing them to conclude their military careers with certified qualifications. In Sabah, a total of 278 graduates received their awards under Series 1/2025 on June 12. Among them, 33 were awarded the Malaysian Skills Diploma — comprising 32 active MAF personnel and one veteran — while the remaining received the Perhebat Certificate.
