DC's unlikely Clayface movie casts its lead actor after an "exhaustive search" as DC boss James Gunn says he and The Batman director Matt Reeves were "blown away" by the audition
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It's official: one of DC Studios' most unlikely films has found its lead actor, as Tom Rhys Harries has been cast as Clayface based on an audition that DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn says left him and The Batman director Matt Reeves "blown away." "After a long and incredibly exhaustive search, we finally have our DCU Clayface in Tom Rhys Harries," Gunn says on social media. "Both Matt Reeves and I were just blown away by this guy, and can't wait for you to see this film, directed by James Watkins and written by Mike Flanagan." Clayface initially joined the DC Universe slate thanks to the strength of Flanagan's script, which fast-tracked the film into development. A version of Clayface appeared in the Creature Commandos animated show, where he was voiced in grunts and roars by Alan Tudyk, though it's actually unclear whether the version of Clayface in the live-action film will be the same character in the show. As it happens, there are actually numerous versions of Clayface in comics. The most famous is Matt Hagen, the second Clayface and the first to possess shapeshifting clay powers, thanks to his involvement in Batman: The Animated Series. The other most famous is Basil Karlo, the original Clayface, who started out as an actor driven to commit murder while in disguise before gaining clay powers of his own. It's been rumored that a version of the Basil Karlo Clayface will be the villain of the long (long, long) awaited The Batman 2, with the Penguin streaming series introducing characters with connections to Karlo. That said, none of that will have much bearing on how the DCU Clayface goes down, as it will take place in the core DC Universe movie continuity, while The Batman exists separately in its own world. Clayface is set to be released on September 11, 2026, as part of DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors The Batman villain who can be anyone he chooses has been cast, and DC Studios has chosen to go with a fresh face rather than a big name. "After a long and incredibly exhaustive search, we finally have our DCU Clayface in @tomrhysharries," Gunn wrote. "Both Matt Reeves and I were just blown away by this guy, and can't wait for you to see this film, directed by James Watkins and written by Mike Flanagan." While Gunn only mentioned Flanagan in his announcement as writer, it was reported back in May that the "Clayface" script had been rewritten by Hossein Amini, best known as the writer for 2011's "Drive". Tom Rhys Harries's other more noteworthy credits include Guy Ritchie's "The Gentleman" as well as "Kandahar". According to Deadline, he won the "Clayface" role over competitors such as Tom Blyth, Jack O'Connell, George MacKay, and Leo Woodall. The character Clayface has technically already shown up in the DCU, specifically in a number of episodes of the animated series "Creature Commandos". He's voiced by Alan Tudyk in the series, who also voices a much more comical version of the character in "Harley Quinn". It will be interesting to see if the "Creature Commandos" appearance is referenced at all in the film, considering Clayface appears to be killed in the series. Tom Rhys Harries's version of Clayface will not be the very first live-action portrayal of the villain. Versions of the character have appeared in "Pennyworth", "Birds of Prey", and "Gotham." However, it will be the first live-action theatrical appearance of the character. It is interesting that TheWrap's report specifies the Matt Hagen version of the Batman villain will appear in the film. Most fans were likely expecting the failed actor Basil Karlo. Unlike Karlo, in the comics, Hagen is a treasure hunter who is transformed into Clayface after encountering a radioactive pool of protoplasm. "Clayface" hits theaters September 11, 2026. The film will be directed by James Watkins of "Speak No Evil" fame. Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris are producing. DC's 'Mister Miracle' Animated Series in the Works, See the First Look Image
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios revealed a new adult animated series at the Annecy Animation Festival, this one following the DC superhero Mister Miracle. A first look image was shared from the series, which you can see below. First look at a 'MISTER MIRACLE' animated series. No trap can contain him. He is Scott Free, the worldwide celebrity sensation known as Mister Miracle, and he is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. But can he pull off the ultimate trick – and escape death itself?" DC's Mister Miracle. DC's Mister Miracle. DC Comics Tom King, who wrote the acclaimed comic book series upon which the animated series is based, serves as showrunner. No information yet has been shared about what network or platform "Mister Miracle" will be available on. "Mister Miracle" is the second adult animated series Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios has collaborated on, the first being this year's "Creature Commandos" whose second seasons is currently in production. According to Variety, "Mister Miracle" will follow escape artist and superhero Scott Free who seems to have put together the perfect life with his wife Big Barda. But things start to look dark when war breaks out between the planets of Apokolips and New Genesis, and the villain Darkseid finally obtains the Anti-Life Equation which he means use to take over the entire universe. Scott Free is the only hope to end the war between the two planets, but he begins to question whether or not the Anti-Life Equation is already fracturing his reality. One big question that needs to be answered is whether or not, like "Creature Commandos", "Mister Miracle" is part of the DCU narrative or will be considered part of the "Elseworlds" stable of projects like "The Batman" and "Penguin". "Mister Miracle" is not one of the series mentioned as part of DC's "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters" line-up, but considering the inclusion of the New Gods, it would certainly be a fitting entry. If it is part of the DCU, something like "Mister Miracle" could mean a lot to the narrative moving forward. Though it's an animated series, "Creature Commandos", for example, introduced fans to Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr. who will return in both "Superman" and the second season of "Peacemaker". The Clayface Movie Is Reportedly Looking At 4 Familiar Actors For The Lead, And They're Great Choices
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. After James Gunn's Superman flies onto the 2025 movies schedule next month and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow follows in June 2026, Clayface will be the next of the upcoming DC movies. Officially greenlit last December, this flick will mark the cinematic debut of the shapeshifting member of Batman's rogues gallery, and follows his DC Universe debut in the Max subscription-exclusive animated series Creature Commandos. However, rather than have Alan Tudyk reprise Clayface, someone else will inhabit the character's messy shoes on the big screen, and I like these four actors who are reportedly in consideration. If scooper MyTimeToShineHello is to be believed, George MacKay, Tom Blyth, Jack O'Connell and Leo Woodall are all testing to play Clayface in the DCU. One of these young English actors is expected to land the role, though there's no mention of who in the quartet is looking likelier than the rest. Assuming this information is accurate, then this is an exceptional lineup of talent to choose from. More on Clayface DC's Clayface Movie Has Reportedly Hit A Setback, But There's Good News While We Wait For The Clayface Movie, There's A New Batman Story That Fans Of The Shapeshifting Villain Need To Check Out In case any or even all of these four actors are unfamiliar to you, here's a quick rundown. George MacKay is arguably best known for playing the title protagonist of 2003's Peter Pan and co-leading the 2019 World War I movie 1917 alongside Dean-Charles Chapman. Tom Blyth rose to fame playing Coriolanus Snow in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, and is currently leading the MGM+ series Billy the Kid. Jack O'Connell starred in Ferrari with Adam Driver and was just seen performing opposite Michael B. Jordan in Sinners. Finally, Leo Woodall appeared in The White Lotus Season 2 and appeared alongside Renée Zellweger earlier this year in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. Feel free to do deeper dives into their resumes on your own. The point being, I certainly wouldn't mind if one of these four actors was selected to play Clayface. Whether it's MacKay, Blyth, O'Connell, Woodall or maybe even someone who hasn't been revealed yet, they will be the fourth actor to portray this villain in live action, as Clayface was previously played by Kirk Baltz on Birds of Prey, Brian McManamon on Gotham, and Lorraine Burroughs on Pennyworth. The Clayface movie has been described as a 'Hollywood horror story' about a B-movie actor who takes a substance that's meant to keep him relevant, but turns him into a clay monstrosity. Meaning, we're almost certainly getting the Basil Karlo incarnation of Clayface given his acting background, though I suppose he could also be merged with Matt Hagen like Batman: The Animated Series did. Either way, what I'm curious about is if these one of these actors will be playing Clayface in his original form, or is this meant to be the idealized version of himself. We'll find out as we move closer and closer to Clayface's September 11, 2026 drop in theaters. James Watkins is directing the DCU movie, and although Mike Flanagan penned the original screenplay, Hossein Amini is now rewriting it.

Peacemaker: James Gunn Teases John Cena vs. Batman in DCU
James Gunn wants to see John Cena's fight Batman in the DCU. Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU officially kicked off last December with the animated Creature Commandos series. Gunn's Superman movie is now being released in United States theaters next month before Peacemaker Season 2, which is part of the new shared DC universe, arrives in August 2025. At CCXPMX 25 this past weekend, per ComicBookMovie, Cena and Gunn were both asked who they'd like to see Cena's Christopher Smith character fight at some point in the DCU. While Cena didn't have an answer, Gunn said that he wants Peacemaker to fight Batman at some point. At this time, it's not clear who will be playing the Dark Knight in the DCU, as no official casting announcement has been made. A Batman movie titled The Brave and the Bold is currently in the works and is being directed by The Flash's Andy Muschietti, though there haven't been a lot of substantial announcements since that project in some time. Peacemaker Season 2, meanwhile, premieres on HBO Max on August 21, 2025. The season will have eight episodes in total. 'The new season follows Christopher 'Chris' Smith, aka Peacemaker, the vigilante Super Hero as he struggles to reconcile his past with his newfound sense of purpose while continuing to kick righteous evil-doer butt in his misguided quest for peace at any cost,' the official logline reads. Along with Cena, the cast of Peacemaker Season 2 includes Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase/Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee as John Economos, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sol Rodríguez as Sasha Bordeaux, Tim Meadows as Langston Fleury, Michael Rooker as Red St. Wild, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Filion as Guy Gardner, and Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord.
