"Complete absence of caste census in notification raises lots of doubts": Congress leader Supriya Shrinate
New Delhi [India], June 16 (ANI): Congress leader Supriya Shrinate on Monday said that complete 'absence' of the term caste census in the government's gazette notification issued for 16th Census has raised questions over the mindset of the BJP on this subject. Speaking to ANI, Shrinate recalled that the government had earlier promised that a caste census will conducted by them. 'Census is a decadal exercise and it has been delayed which is why people are not able to get the benefits of government schemes. This is a routine notification. There is no mention of the caste census here, a promise that the government said would be fulfilled on April 30,' Shrinate said. Asserting that BJP has always opposed the idea of caste-based reservations, Shrinate pointed out that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have forced the government to conduct a caste census. 'BJP should be the last one talking about the SC/ST and OBC as they have historically been against the constitution... Pt. Nehru brought the first amendment to the constitution about reservation, but it was opposed by Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee... RSS Chiefs opposed the reservations... This government filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court in September 2021 saying we are against the Caste Census,' she said. Earlier today, Congress General Secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi over 'no mention' of caste census in the gazette notification for the population census by the Ministry of Home Affairs, asking, 'Has the Prime Minister changed his mind?' 'Today's gazette notification says only census will be done in late October of 2026 in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal and the rest of the country it will be done in March 2027. It does not talk of the word caste census. So my question is, has the Prime Minister changed his mind again? Why is there no mention of the caste census?' the senior Congress leader said while speaking to ANI. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a notification on Monday announcing that the 16th census will be carried out in snow-bound non-synchronous areas of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand from October 2026 and the rest of the country from March 2027. 'In exercise of the powers conferred by Section three of the Census Act 1948 and in suppression of the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Home Affairs dated March 26, 2018, the Central Government declared that a census of the population of India shall be taken during the year 2027,' the MHA notification read. The reference date for the census shall be March 1, 2027, except for the Union territory of Ladakh and the snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. On April 30, Union Minister Ashiwni Vaishnaw announced that the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs has decided to include caste enumeration in the general census. (ANI)

New Delhi [India], June 16 (ANI): Raising questions on the Census 2027, Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Monday questioned Union Home Minister whether the Census data would follow the Telangana model or if the country was staring at another 'Jumla.' 'Dear Mr. Amit Shah, will the 2027 Caste Census follow the Telangana model, or is India staring at another Jumla? The first caste census since 1931 has been officially notified. But we have questions. Big ones. And the country deserves answers,' the post on social media X read. Tagore also questioned the government, asking if it was following the Telangana model or avoiding it for political convenience. He also raised questions if the Census 2027 would release full caste data, including the OBCs or would it be another round of data collection. Tagore also raised questions on what was stopping the Government from having a precise and transparent Census. Furthermore, Tagore questioned if the 2027 Census would become a tool of justice or would be another headline. 'Will the 2027 Census become a tool of justice, or just another headline? Mr. Shah, history is watching. India is waiting. And the OBCs will not settle for optics without outcomes,' he further wrote. "Congress suggested Karnataka govt to re-enumerate caste census data": KC Venugopal
New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): After Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar met the Congress top leadership in New Delhi on Tuesday, Congress MP KC Venugopal said that the meeting discussed two to three crucial issues, including the caste census and the Bengaluru stampede. Speaking to the media, Venugopal said that as some people have 'apprehensions' about the caste census data, the Congress top leadership has suggested that the Karnataka government re-enumerate the data. 'Rahul ji, CM of Karnataka, PCC chief of Karnataka and state in-charge met today. Basically, 2-3 issues were discussed. First was the caste census, which the Karnataka government will be going to discuss on June 12 in a special cabinet meeting. The Congress party thinks that whatever the Karnataka Government has done on the Caste Census, it has to be agreed upon in principle. However, there are some apprehensions from some community sections and people about the data. The Congress party has suggested that the Karnataka government re-enumerate within a stipulated time.' Speaking on the Bengaluru stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 that killed 11 people and left over 50 injured, KC Venugopal said that CM Siddaramaiah briefed the Congress leadership about the action taken by the government. 'We also discussed the current political situation, including the tragic incident that happened in Bengaluru. CM and PCC President briefed the leadership about the incident and the action taken by the government afterwards. We are concerned about every single life. We didn't want to get involved already, a judicial probe has been ordered, but we want the probe to be completed in a fixed tenure,' the Congress leader said. 'The Central government's attitude was one of the most important things discussed. They are completely neglecting the state of Karnataka. The Central Plan Allocation to Karnataka is totally unacceptable. They are marginalising Karnataka into a corner. This is an injustice to the people of the state,' Venugopal added. The Karnataka CM and Deputy CM met the Congress top leadership today at Indira Bhawan in New Delhi. Bihar, Karnataka and Telangana have already conducted a caste census in their respective state. Telangana has also implemented a 42 per cent backwards class reservation for people in the state. The Karnataka State Commission for Backwards Classes has also submitted the caste census (socio, economic and educational survey) report to the Siddaramaiah-led cabinet. The caste census report, if released, will be the second by a Congress-ruled state, after Telangana. (ANI)

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 6 (ANI): Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav, on Friday, emphasised that the Caste Census will only be done properly under the PDA (Pichde, Dalits, Alpsankhyak) government in 2027. Speaking with the media, Yadav said, 'Caste Census will happen in 2027, under the PDA (Pichde, Dalits, Alpasankhyak) Government. Only then will the Census be done properly.' Further, Akhilesh Yadav claimed that there is an incomplete museum in Agra of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which the Samajwadi Party's government will not only complete, but also install a grand statue of Shivaji Maharaj at Lucknow 'In honour of a great personality like Chhatrapati Shivaji is an incomplete museum in Agra whose architect is the Samajwadis, will not only make the museum in his name, but we will also install a grand statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Lucknow Riverfront; his throne will be made of gold. Samajwadis will honour him like that in 2027,' Akhilesh Yadav said. Uttar Pradesh will witness the next Assembly elections in 2027 between the two most prominent parties, i.e., Bharatiya Janata Party and Samajwadi Party. The Congress is likely to contest the polls in alliance with the SP. In the current session, the Uttar Pradesh Assembly has 403 elected members, 258 of whom are from the Bhartiya Janata Party, 107 from the Samajwadi Party, and 13 from the Apna Dal. Earlier today, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi attended the 'Samvidhan Sabha' in Rajgir, Nalanda. Addressing the gathering, Gandhi emphasised the need for a caste census and criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's stance on the issue. He questioned PM Modi's claim of being an OBC while asserting that the BJP denies the existence of caste in India, emphasising the need for a genuine caste census. 'Narendra Modi used to say in every speech, I am OBC. Then, on the caste census, they say that there is no caste in India. If there is no caste in India, then how did Narendra Modi become an OBC? My goal is to conduct a caste census. I had said this to Narendra Modi face to face in Lok Sabha - there will be a caste census, and you know he has a habit of surrendering,' Rahul Gandhi posted on Congress X handle. Rahul Gandhi emphasised the importance of conducting a caste census, asserting that it would reveal the country's actual social and economic dynamics. (ANI)
