TG seeks NOC from Jal Shakti Ministry and A.P. for utilisation of 1,500 tmc ft in Godavari and Krishna

The Telangana Government has sought a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Union Jal Shakti Ministry and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh allowing it to utilise 1,000 tmc ft of Godavari and 500 tmc ft of Krishna water. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has urged Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil to ensure that the Central Government gives its consent for the NOC allowing Telangana to utilise 1,500 tmc ft water as it would suffice to realise the goal of irrigating 1.5 crore acres of land. 'We have no objection if the Centre examines the clearances for projects proposed by Andhra Pradesh after allocating 1,500 tmc ft water from the two rivers,' the Chief Minister told the Union Minister. He termed as inappropriate the Centre's attitude in responding speedily to the projects proposed by the neighbouring State and neglecting Telangana's projects. This would give scope for apprehensions between the two States that could in turn lead to problematic situations, he said, seeking the Union Minister's cooperation in according clearances to Palamuru-Rangareddy, Tummidihatti and Sammakka-Sarakka projects at the earliest. Funds for Musi project The Centre should consider granting funds for the Musi rejuvenation project proposed by the Telangana Government on the lines of similar projects taken up on Ganga and Yamuna rivers. Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, who briefed reporters after the meeting, said that the Jal Shakti Minister responded positively to the State's request. Mr. Patil told the Chief Minister and the Irrigation Minister that the Centre was yet to receive the detailed project report pertaining to the Godavari-Banakacharla project. The Union Minister also assured the State delegation that he would take the initiative in convening the meeting of the Apex Council headed by him and comprising the Chief Ministers of the two Telugu States as members soon.

No injustice to any State on proposed Banakacharla project: Centre

The Centre will evaluate the proposed Banakacharla irrigation project in a fair manner as per existing norms and after consulting all the stakeholders, said Union Minister for Water Resources C.R. Patil on Wednesday. He told his Cabinet colleague and Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy at his office in Shram Shakti Bhavan, New Delhi, that no State will face any injustice. Metro Phase II Mr. Kishan Reddy also met Union Minister of Housing and Urban Development Manohar Lal Khattar, and discussed the Hyderabad Metro Rail phase two proposals submitted by the Telangana Government. Mr. Khattar stated that the DPR after incorporating Centre's suggestions was received and it was under evaluation. The Centre is keen to support the project, he said in a press release. Playing politics Meanwhile, Nizamabad MP D. Aravind accused the Congress and BRS of playing politics on AP's Banakacharla project, ahead of local body polls. 'This is a plan hatched by former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao to rake up the Telangana sentiment. Why can't Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy discuss the issue with his AP counterpart N. Chandrababu Naidu if there are any grievance about the project,' he questioned. The MP wanted to know if the Congress Government has any plans or funds to take up projects to make use of the Godavari river waters which AP has plans to make use of with the proposed new project. The political game plan of the Congress and BRS parties appears to blame the Central Government despite having no clue on perceived grievances, he added.

CM Revanth Reddy firm on countering A.P. on Banakacherla

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has announced his firmness to counter neighbouring Andhra Pradesh' moves to take up the Banakacharla-Polavaram project claiming that it is against the interests of Telangana. The CM, who participated in a meeting of all party MPs here on Wednesday, asked them to cooperate in passing a unanimous resolution against the proposed project to mount pressure on the Central Government against giving its go ahead. 'We shall stay on one page in the larger interests of the people of Telangana. We will pass a unanimous resolution cutting across political lines in this direction,' he said, adding that he would meet Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil on Thursday. It was decided at the meeting that the issue would be raised in the ensuing monsoon session of Parliament next month. 'We will meet all the Ministers concerned including the Union Finance Minister, to oppose the project,' he said. The project still needs environmental and other clearances and the ministers concerned would be requested not to accord them. 'I will stay in New Delhi for three or four days if need be to mount pressure on the Centre,' he said. The political battle would be followed by legal battle where in the government is prepared to rope in the best lawyers to defend its cause and protect the State's interests. Asserting that the meeting was not for political purposes, he said the foundation for the Banakacharla project was laid in 2019 when the then Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao assured AP Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy that he would extend his cooperation to the neighbouring State's efforts to make Rayalaseema fertile through the diversion of Godavari water to Krishna and Penna basins. 'Mr. Rao and Mr. Jagan agreed to divert 400 tmc ft Godavari water to Rayalaseema region in this direction,' he said.
