Heavy vehicles involved in fatal accidents in Pune to be seized

In the wake of a rising number of fatal road accidents involving heavy vehicles, Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar has ordered the seizure of all such vehicles involved in fatal mishaps over the past five years. The initiative follows the tragic death of a woman who was crushed under a heavy vehicle while riding a two-wheeler in the Market Yard area on June 11. (REPRESENTATIVE PHOTO) Acting on the directive dated June 18, the city's traffic department is currently compiling detailed data on heavy vehicles comprising trucks, trailers, and ready-mix concrete (RMC) trucks that were involved in deadly accidents. Once the data is finalized, the police plan to submit a formal proposal to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) for the cancellation of driving licenses of drivers found responsible for the accidents, said officials. The initiative follows the tragic death of a woman who was crushed under a heavy vehicle while riding a two-wheeler in the Market Yard area on June 11. The vehicle had entered a restricted zone violating the ban on heavy vehicle movement during peak hours. 'Given the alarming rise in fatalities, the city police and RTO will now take joint action. Licenses will be called in and vehicles will be impounded,' said Kumar adding that strict enforcement is necessary to protect public safety and prevent further tragedies. Over the past year alone, Pune recorded 334 fatal road accidents, claiming 354 lives. Alarmingly during the last five months, 129 accidents have resulted in 133 deaths with many of them involving heavy vehicles. The traffic police have already imposed a citywide ban on the movement of heavy vehicles such as multi-axle trucks, containers, trailers, and bulkers with more than 10 wheels from Monday to Saturday between 7 am and 10 pm excluding red zones and specific internal roads. Only essential service vehicles will be allowed entry between midnight and 6 am.

Only 28 licences have been approved during this period, including 10 on hereditary claims and nine under the sports quota. Gun licences issued from 2021 to 2023 were 659. From January 1, 2024, to June 3, 2025, 572 applications for firearm licences were received by the city commissioner's office and only 28 were approved. (REPRESENTATIVE PHOTO) From January 1, 2024, to June 3, 2025, 572 applications for firearm licences were received by the city commissioner's office and only 28 were approved. Scrutiny of 140 weapon holders found 49 with criminal backgrounds and their licences were cancelled. Some others have received notices for further scrutiny. 'Applicants must provide substantial and truthful reasons to obtain a licence. A very stringent methodology has been adopted where all details are being verified,' Kumar said. Cases November 2024: Shrikant Shamrao Patil, 45, a retired army major, shot neighbour Dilshad Mulani, 33, in Yerawada during a disagreement over vehicle parking. AI traffic system in Pune boosts safety & transparency in city

has partnered with the Pune Traffic Police to deploy an artificial intelligence-based traffic enforcement system on Fergusson College Road in Pune, India, as part of efforts to support India's smart city agenda. The pilot scheme, which uses AI-powered cameras to monitor traffic and identify violations, commenced on one of Pune's busiest thoroughfares. The system is programmed to detect infractions such as illegal parking, wrong-side driving, and obstruction of traffic flow. Within its initial day of operation, the technology recorded 200 violations. Over the course of the first 13 days, a total of 742 electronic challans (e-challans) were issued. These included 201 notices for no parking, 420 for double parking, and 121 for travelling on the wrong side of the road. Automated enforcement The AI system sends immediate alerts of violations to the city's traffic control room, enabling rapid response by authorities without the need for manual observation. As part of the initiative, a large digital screen has been installed on Fergusson College Road to publicly display real-time breaches, aiming to increase transparency and public compliance. "This AI-based system is a game-changer for urban traffic management," said Amitesh Kumar, Pune Police Commissioner. "By automating violation detection, we aim to improve road discipline and reduce manual workload for our officers." The broader aim of the project is to improve road safety and streamline traffic flows by addressing violations that contribute to congestion and accidents. Authorities noted that early data from the deployment indicate meaningful improvements in rule adherence by road users on the monitored stretch. Integrated platform SenSen's Live Awareness Platform underpins the enforcement system. It combines data streams from a variety of sensors and camera feeds to offer a single, real-time overview of urban traffic dynamics. According to information provided, the technology has previously been adopted in several international cities including Brisbane, Singapore, and Chicago, supporting local governments in their own traffic management and public safety programmes. The collaboration in Pune follows the deployment of similar AI traffic monitoring systems elsewhere in India, such as the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, where the mechanisms are used to monitor vehicle speeds and track other drivings violations to mitigate risks and promote road safety. Global and local context SenSen's partnership with the Pune Traffic Police aligns with a wider movement in India to incorporate artificial intelligence into urban infrastructure as cities balance rapid growth with increasing transportation and safety challenges. The company's technology is also in use across North America, Asia, and the Middle East, and has been integrated into operations by a variety of commercial and public sector organisations. According to the organisations involved, the introduction of these systems demonstrates the potential for technology firms based outside of India to support local authorities with digital solutions, with the aim of practical improvements to urban living standards. Ajit Pawar launches Pune city traffic app

Pune, June 14 (UNI) Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and guardian minister of Pune district Ajit Pawar on Saturday launched an app developed by the Pune city Police Commissionerate for a real time two-way communication between the citizens on the move and the traffic police to get immediate information about the traffic situation to prevent snarls and enhance ease of driving. The PTP TRAFFIC COP APP has been developed based on the concept of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar. Additional Commissioner of Police of Eastern Regional Division of Pune city Manoj Patil presented information about this app through a video. The inaugural event was organized at Vidhan Bhavan which was attended by divisional commissioner Dr Chandrakant Pulkundwar, police commissioner Amitesh Kumar, his counterpart in Pimpri Chinchwad Vinay Kumar Choubey, special inspector general of police of Kolhapur range Sunil Phulari, Pune Municipal Corporation commissioner Navalkishore Ram, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation Commissioner Shekhar Singh and others. Among the many urban problems in Pune, the city people mainly face traffic jams and accidents caused by it. Pollution caused by traffic has become yet another big problem. One of the main reasons is the lack of effective action against drivers who violate traffic rules. In this app, citizens can upload photos of drivers who commit serious traffic violations such as parking vehicles on sidewalks, driving on the footpaths, violating heavy vehicle restrictions, using mobile phones while driving, driving a triple seat vehicle, using black films, using fancy number plates and driving in the opposite direction from no entry passages. Police ban heavy vehicles at Pune's Gangadham Chowk from 6am-11pm after accident death

1 2 3 Pune: Police commissioner Amitesh Kumar on Thursday said heavy vehicles would be banned between 6am and 11pm on a temporary basis and height barriers soon installed in the accident-prone Gangadham Chowk area. Kumar said this after reviewing the traffic situation at the Gangadham Chowk a day after a woman, Deepali Soni (29), riding pillion on a scooter died and her father-in-law, Jagdish Soni (61), was injured as a truck hit their two-wheeler at the busy junction on Gangadham-Shatrunjay road — a stretch banned for heavy vehicles. The truck, which was coming from Market Yard, was not supposed to move towards the Aai Mata temple as heavy vehicles are banned on Gangadham-Shatrunjay road. Besides banning movement of heavy vehicles on the Gangadham-Shatrunjay Mandir road, the police also announced similar restrictions on the Lullanagar-Gangadham Chowk-Bibvewadi Road between 6am and 11pm. Movement of heavy vehicles was also banned on the Seven Loves Chowk-Gangadham Chowk stretch. "We do not want any heavy vehicle to cross the Gangadham Chowk during these hours. A notification in this regard will be issued soon," Kumar said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Aparat portabil de sudura cu laser, suporta sudarea sub apa Esto Cumpără acum Undo Residents of the Gangadham area said Wednesday's was not the first fatal accident at the busy crossing. Exactly a year ago, a woman (59) was killed and her daughter-in-law (37) was critically injured after a dumper truck had hit their scooter near Gangadham Chowk. Following this, police on June 22 last year introduced a ban on heavy vehicles on two roads leading to the Gangadham Chowk on Bibwewadi-Kondhwa Road from 7am to 10pm. The two roads begin from Shatrunjay Temple and Tilekarnagar Chowk and converge at Aai Mata Mandir road and further to Gangadham Chowk. Trucks, cement mixers, dumpers and all types of multi-axle commercial transport vehicles (barring emergency, essential services and public transport vehicles) were banned then on the stretch. The latest accident occurred as the truck driver violated the ban, police said. "We know that there are many construction activities in the area, and ready-mix cement trucks, dumper trucks and other heavy vehicles regularly use the Gangadham Chowk. These vehicles will also not be allowed to cross the Gangadham Chowk," said Kumar, who was accompanied by joint police commissioner Ranjan Kumar Sharma and additional commissioner of police Manoj Patil. "Moreover, there are vegetable shops and godowns at the Market Yard. Godown and shops operating without govt approvals and licences will be sealed. We will also consult the city fire brigade and ambulance association before installing the height barriers," the police commissioner said. "The area has a number of liquor shops and bars. We will serve notices under the Bombay Police Act to the ones close to schools. If they fail to provide satisfactory answers, their licences. People cannot consume alcohol near roads and cause nuisance to other road users," he said. Police will also focus on ways to better the traffic arrangements at the crossing. "Our team will undertake traffic improvement at the junction and prepare a plan to improve mobility and safety. We will remove all encroachments. The Aai Mata Mandir Road has a steep slope towards Gangadham Chowk. We will again discuss the issue with PMC and work on reducing the gradient. It will require engineering solutions. We will review the situation at the chowk after a week," he said. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
