AI traffic system in Pune boosts safety & transparency in city

Techday NZ5 days ago

SenSen.ai has partnered with the Pune Traffic Police to deploy an artificial intelligence-based traffic enforcement system on Fergusson College Road in Pune, India, as part of efforts to support India's smart city agenda.
The pilot scheme, which uses AI-powered cameras to monitor traffic and identify violations, commenced on one of Pune's busiest thoroughfares. The system is programmed to detect infractions such as illegal parking, wrong-side driving, and obstruction of traffic flow. Within its initial day of operation, the technology recorded 200 violations. Over the course of the first 13 days, a total of 742 electronic challans (e-challans) were issued. These included 201 notices for no parking, 420 for double parking, and 121 for travelling on the wrong side of the road.
Automated enforcement
The AI system sends immediate alerts of violations to the city's traffic control room, enabling rapid response by authorities without the need for manual observation. As part of the initiative, a large digital screen has been installed on Fergusson College Road to publicly display real-time breaches, aiming to increase transparency and public compliance. "This AI-based system is a game-changer for urban traffic management," said Amitesh Kumar, Pune Police Commissioner. "By automating violation detection, we aim to improve road discipline and reduce manual workload for our officers."
The broader aim of the project is to improve road safety and streamline traffic flows by addressing violations that contribute to congestion and accidents. Authorities noted that early data from the deployment indicate meaningful improvements in rule adherence by road users on the monitored stretch.
Integrated platform
SenSen's Live Awareness Platform underpins the enforcement system. It combines data streams from a variety of sensors and camera feeds to offer a single, real-time overview of urban traffic dynamics. According to information provided, the technology has previously been adopted in several international cities including Brisbane, Singapore, and Chicago, supporting local governments in their own traffic management and public safety programmes.
The collaboration in Pune follows the deployment of similar AI traffic monitoring systems elsewhere in India, such as the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, where the mechanisms are used to monitor vehicle speeds and track other drivings violations to mitigate risks and promote road safety.
Global and local context
SenSen's partnership with the Pune Traffic Police aligns with a wider movement in India to incorporate artificial intelligence into urban infrastructure as cities balance rapid growth with increasing transportation and safety challenges. The company's technology is also in use across North America, Asia, and the Middle East, and has been integrated into operations by a variety of commercial and public sector organisations.
According to the organisations involved, the introduction of these systems demonstrates the potential for technology firms based outside of India to support local authorities with digital solutions, with the aim of practical improvements to urban living standards.

At least three impacts in Israel during Iran missile attacks, 23 hurt

Don't miss out on the headlines from Breaking News. Followed categories will be added to My News. Three areas of Israel including coastal hub Tel Aviv were hit Sunday morning during waves of Iranian missile attacks, with at least 23 people injured, according to rescue services and police. Several buildings were heavily damaged in the Ramat Aviv area in Tel Aviv, with holes torn in the facades of apartment blocks. "Houses here were hit very, very badly," Tel Aviv mayor Ron Huldai told reporters at the scene. "Fortunately, one of them was slated for demolition and reconstruction, so there were no residents inside. "Those who were in the shelter are all safe and well. The damage is very, very extensive, but in terms of human life, we are okay." The Israeli police said in a statement that they had been deployed to at least two other impact sites, one in Haifa in the north and another in Ness Ziona, south of Tel Aviv. A public square in a residential area of Haifa was left strewn with rubble and surrounding shops and homes have been heavily damaged, AFP photos showed. Eli Bin, the head of Israeli rescue service Magen David Adom, told reporters that a total of 23 people had been wounded nationwide in the attacks, with "two in moderate condition and the rest lightly injured." Two waves of missiles were launched at Israel from around 7:30 am (0430 GMT), the Israeli military said. Sirens rang across the country, with air defences activated shortly afterwards, causing loud explosions heard in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Israeli police reported "the fall of weapon fragments" in a northern area encompassing the port of Haifa, where local authorities said emergency services were heading to an "accident site". Reporting on missile strikes is subject to strict military censorship rules in Israel, but at least 50 impacts have been officially acknowledged nation-wide and 25 people have been killed since the war began with Iran on June 13, according to official figures. Tel Aviv, the southern city of Beersheba and the northern port of Haifa have been the three areas most frequently targeted by Iran. Israel's sophisticated air defences have intercepted more than 450 missiles along with around 1,000 drones, according to the latest figures from the Israeli military. crb-adp/ds/dcp Originally published as At least three impacts in Israel during Iran missile attacks, 23 hurt

UCL finalist manager admits Barcelona are being missed at Club World Cup

UCL finalist manager admits Barcelona are being missed at Club World Cup Simone Inzaghi, now leading Saudi side Al-Hilal, did not hold back when speaking ahead of his team's FIFA Club World Cup clash against RB Salzburg. Inzaghi, who recently guided Inter Milan to the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League final after beating Barcelona in the semi-finals, praised the quality of the ongoing tournament. Advertisement However, he also made sure to highlight what he sees as a major shortcoming: the absence of FC Barcelona. Al-Hilal opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid, a strong result against one of Europe's top clubs. But despite the high level of competition, the Italian manager pointed to a missing piece. 'The Club World Cup has been fantastic so far. All the elite clubs are here. We are only missing Barcelona,' said Inzaghi as quoted by SPORT. Indeed a major absentee The Club World Cup features teams based on performances from previous seasons, which left Barcelona out of the picture. Barcelona have missed out on Club World Cup. (Photo by) Advertisement This is despite their domestic dominance during the current campaign and the fact that they went furthest among La Liga teams in the latest Champions League edition. Inzaghi's comments reflect the feelings of many in the football world who believe Barça's exclusion doesn't quite match the level they have shown this year. Thunderstorm delays and mixed match quality have already drawn attention during the tournament, but it is the absence of giants like Barcelona that stands out most to seasoned professionals like Inzaghi. It is clear that when a coach with Champions League pedigree makes such a remark, it is not casual. Advertisement For a tournament that aims to bring together the world's top clubs, missing a team of Barcelona's stature feels like a noticeable gap. The message from Inzaghi is simple but powerful that if you want a true world championship, Barcelona should be there.
