Shayne O'Cass's tips and inside mail for Monday racing at Tamworth and Albury

Form analyst Shayne O'Cass presents his best bets and inside mail for Monday's NSW meetings at Tamworth and Albury. â– â– â– â– â– TAMWORTH TIPS BEST BET Race 4 No.2 EVERLASTING KISS: Local ion a good yard, last start winner over her main rival as well. NEXT BEST Race 3 No.3 HELLWITHASMILE: Cody Morgan housed gelding whose trials indicate an early career win. VALUE Race 2 No.3 PRIDE OF NATIONS: A $2,000 buy whose trial was not quite priceless, but good anyhow. QUADDIE Race 4: 2,3 Race 5: 2,4,5,10 Race 6: 1,2 Race 7: 2,7 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW Kody Nestor has some good rides on Monday's card. TAMWORTH INSIDE MAIL RACE 4: Benchmark 66 (2100m) EVERLASTING KISS (2) has plenty more to offer on the track but she is a breeder's dream for later on. For starters, she is by Justify but it only gets better when you factor in that her fifth dam is Eight Carat. As far as the 'punt' goes here, Everlasting Kiss is racing at home today having beaten her main rival, DESCENDING MIST (3), when they met at Inverell last start. That said, there wasn't much between them. BET: EVERLASTING KISS (2) to win (best bet) exacta 2 to beat 3. NOT IN DOUBT (5) is trained by Cody Morgan who has a 21 per cent winning strike-rate here. With that said, the local Not In Doubt has the visitor's draw but he has been so consistent that it is hard to go around him. GREAT POINT (4) is third-up now and getting close to a win. Those two fifths this prep were behind Tasoraay and Red Rags To Bulls. BET: NOT IN DOUBT (5) to win, quinella 5,4, Daily Double 1st Leg 5, 2nd Leg 2. TAVROS (3) is trained here; he has raced at home four times for two wins and a third. On top of that, his jockey Aaron Bullock is one for one on this (bargain) $12,000 yearling. Never won under 1400m but he is fresh-up off a decent trial. STARRY JACK (1) is so used to carrying big weights. Such an honest horse, such an in-form one too being a last start winner. Myalaby has a tidy CV of 12 starts for two wins and four placings. Most impressive at Warren recently. BET: TAVROS (3) each-way, quinella 1,3. THIS ONE TIME (2) was a $15,000 weanling, sold again at the Classic Yearling Sale making $36,000. Already a winner of $41,000 in six runs, she has some amazing broodmare sires; Seattle Slew, Secretariat, all the way back to Man O'War. Now for what really matters; she (and her jockey) are on a hat-trick, one for one at track and distance. Dynamic Syndications filly SAGAPONACK (7) is a Snitzel, a great granddaughter of Lady Jakeo and is also on a hat-trick! BET: THIS ONE TIME (2) to win, quinella 2,7. â– â– â– â– â– ALBURY TIPS BEST BET Race 2 No.2 DONEGAL BAY: Only needed an extra 50m and he wins the 900m maiden; 1000m now. NEXT BEST Race 6 No.11 JATO: Neville Begg/Danny Beasley galloper who is talented beyond this grade. VALUE Race 7 No.8 JUST LIKE LIAM: Been somewhat unlucky; nice race for him here. ALBURY INSIDE MAIL RACE 4: Benchmark 58 (1175m) TI TREE ROYAL (2) is a Ron Stubbs trained local who led throughout to win rather easily at Corowa first-up with Jason Lyon on from a good draw. same deal today only he is back home. Could/should be hard to run down again. SUNDROP (9) didn't run too badly either side of her Corowa win. Is usually strong late and often in significantly better races than this one on Monday. Luke Pepper's IMABARBIEGIRL (6) has claims. BET: TI TREE ROYAL (2) to win, SUNDROP (9) to place, exacta 2 to beat 9. ROCKBARTON SHOUT (1) has raced 13 times for Andrew Dale; winning five, four seconds and twice third. Been here twice for a win and a second. That second was a nose behind Ditterich who will run here as well. back to Rockbarton Shout just to add that she has 'a winning draw' if good enough. MAGNOLIA STAR (13) was too fast for the others when she won here on May 27. BET: ROCKBARTON SHOUT (1) to win, Daily Double 1sr Leg 1, 2nd Leg 8. JATO (11) was bought by Neville Begg for $25,000 as a weanling. The Starcraft filly (out of Zabeel Adrian Knox runner-up, Rahveel) has a real future in the mid to long term. The Danny Beasley-trained 3YO has done some good things in her five starts. She is a 64-rater in an 82 but has a lot of upside. SMART POPPY (5) beat Blow In by inches last at Wagga with Saturday's Highway placegetter Salute Again in third that day. JUST LIKE LIAM (8) hasn't had the best of luck of late. He could have nearly won a Benchmark 66 at Wagga on Town Plate day but for barrier one (boxed in). Back to the mile from two 2000m runs with three weeks off to freshen sets him up to run well. BELLMAN (2) was scratched from a race at home at Wangaratta on Sunday to run here. The Andrew Dale trained Kiwi-bred gelding has finished runner-up in four starts at the Albury 1600m. WHIRLWIND (4) and WARPAINTED (6) are among the chances.

Reunited owners of dachshund Valerie share stunning update

Australia's famous lost and found dachshund has just celebrated her third birthday after being reunited with her owners, and that's not all the pooch has been up to. The sausage dog was welcomed home by owners Georgia Gardner and Josh Fishlock after spending 529 days lost on South Australia's Kangaroo Island. 'Valerie has spent almost half her life missing, so to be able to celebrate this birthday with her at home is everything to us,' Ms Gardner said. 'We didn't get to celebrate her second birthday as she was still missing. 'But this year, we're making up for it with a little family party with all the pets together at home, FaceTime with our parents, lots of cuddles, new toys and of course, dog-friendly birthday cake and a puppuccino or two!' International media attention descended on South Australia to cover Valerie's miracle rescue story, but now the dachshund is settling into a new lifestyle in Albury, NSW. The sausage dog has been busy appearing as a 'celebrity guest' at the local RSPCA's Million Paws Walk, 'welcome home' gifts are being sent to the pooch from across the country, and Hollywood has come knocking. 'If you had told me a year ago that we'd get Valerie home and everyone would want to know about it, my head would have exploded,' Ms Gardner said. 'We're getting movie and book inquiries and messages from the New York Times, The Washington Post and BBC. I'm from a small town of 800 people and Valerie is my little dog. 'If those book and movie projects happen, I'd be absolutely gobsmacked!' The dog has even found time to pick up some employment. Valerie was recently appointed as an 'ambassador' for The Paws Room – a company that makes designer pet furniture. In her role, the dachshund has already started showing off the products, recently pictured in a wooden crate designed to calm pets. 'We knew Valerie would initially need a safe and calming space to rest and readjust,' Ms Gardner said. The dog is getting reintroduced to the creature comforts brought from domestication, enjoying puppuccinos and regular walks. 'Valerie is cheeky, bold and full of personality. And after everything she's been through, she deserves a safe space and all the treats in the world,' Ms Gardner said.

Sienna Toohey, 16, surfaces as bright hope for Australian swimming

A 16-year-old schoolgirl is being hailed as the future of Australian swimming after earning world championship selection. Sienna Toohey left seasoned campaigners including Kaylee McKeown in awe with a stunning swim at Australia's selection trials in Adelaide on Tuesday night. The Albury teenager, who only started swimming because she wanted to play water polo, triumphed in the women's 100m breaststroke. Toohey's victory, in a personal best time of 1:06.55, secured her berth at the world titles in Singapore from 27 July to 3 August. 'All of these people being my idols, now I get to be on the team with them,' Toohey said. 'These are people that I was watching two years ago, saying I want to be like them.' The daughter of the relieving principal at Albury High School, Toohey initially wanted to be a water polo player. 'My parents told me that I couldn't do water polo if I didn't swim, so I started swimming,' she said. 'And then my water polo progressed and my swimming was too at the same time. 'I got to the point where I had to choose swimming or water polo. Obviously, I chose swimming – it was the right choice.' Five-time Olympic gold medallist McKeown was among those impressed with Toohey's feat at the South Australian Aquatic Centre. 'I was 16 when I made my first team and it really taught me a lot being with the older guys,' McKeown said after winning the 100m backstroke final on Tuesday night. 'I'm excited to see young swimmers coming through the ranks. 'The more experience that they can get leading into LA [the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics], we have a really good chance of doing Australia proud.' McKeown, who has told of the mental toll during her decorated career, offered some advice to the precocious Toohey. 'Just to enjoy yourself,' McKeown said. 'The more you be serious, the more you're harsh on yourself, you keep just digging yourself in a bit of a hole and it's quite hard to get out of.' 'The team I was first aiming to get on was definitely that one,' she said. 'Now that I've made this one, we'll have to push up the timeline a bit more.' Also on Tuesday night, Alex Perkins threatened the national women's 50m butterfly record by clocking 25.36 seconds, 0.05 shy of Holly Barratt's benchmark set six years ago. Injury-plagued Ed Sommerville, 20, made his first senior long-course national team by winning the men's 200m freestyle in 1:44.93 ahead of Sam Short (1:45.71). Joshua Edwards-Smith prevailed in the men's 100m backstroke in 54.28 and and Matt Temple took out the men's 100m butterfly in 51.00.

Wagga preview: Trainer Gary Colvin is confident in Southern Dancer's potential as she looks to overcome unlucky streak

Southern Dancer may only have one win to her name but trainer Gary Colvin is adamant her record should read much better. The three-year-old claimed a maiden win over 1175m at just her second start and has been placed in five of her next 11 starts. The latest of those placings was over 2050m at Wodonga 12 days ago when third to First Day when luck wasn't her friend. ' Southern Dancer is probably one of the unluckiest horses I've ever had,' said Colvin. 'She has had a lot of bad draws and no luck in a number of races. 'We went to Wodonga last start and she just got held up at a vital stage. 'With a 200m straight, it was too late when she got out but she hit the line full of running. 'Hopefully all the bad luck is behind her now.' Punters get the cash! ðŸ'° The well-backed Southern Dancer handles the conditions and lets down powerfully to take Race 1 at @AlburyRacing under Holly Durnan for trainer Gary Colvin. â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) July 29, 2024 The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! The daughter of I Am Immortal steps out in the Benchmark 58 Handicap (2000m) which is a Heat of the Wagga Stayers Series with Blaike McDougall to again ride. 'Blaike rode her at Canberra a couple of starts back and said she will get over 2400m metres,' Colvin said. 'I'll just stick to the 2000 metres for now but I really like her. 'Back to a big track, I'm confident she will run really well.' In the same race, he also saddles up Kerma Art who is having his first go at the 2000m. 'He won a couple of races and is usually not too far away,' he said. 'He has been running up to a mile but he's a bit of a one-pacer so I thought I would try him over the 2000 metres and see what happens. 'He's no star but he should be thereabouts. Lightly-raced four-year-old Deflector has been very good in placing at her two runs this preparation and is a leading contender in the Maiden Plate (1300m). The daughter of Pride Of Dubai resumed with a third to Master Patrick in a Wagga Super Maiden over 1000m where she was held up early in the straight. She then finished a nose second to Sundrop over 1200m at Corowa 18 days later. 'She is coming along quite nicely and I expect her to go very well,' Colvin said. Master Patrick flies home on the outside and wins at a BIG price! He was $101 on @tabcomau fixed odds! ðŸ'° @AshMorgan6 | @tpd_racing â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 1, 2025 'She is a typical Pride Of Dubai, taking a bit of time to mature but she is starting to it her straps now. She is getting better with every run. 'You like to see them continuing to come on and that is what she is doing.' Another maiden who is closing in on his first win is Doc March who contests the Maiden Plate (1600m). The son of Prized Icon was runner-up in consecutive starts at Wagga before a fourth to Chilly Charlie at Canberra on May 9. 'He just got back and could make up the ground to win in a couple of races here at Wagga,' Colvin said. 'I knew he wanted a bit of ground but he is on his way and going pretty well. 'He has had about a month since his last run but he is ticking over very well.' Joining him in this race is Astern Torch who is coming off a third to Track And Field on the Wagga Riverside 12 days ago. 'He has been a very frustrating horse. He showed me ability early on but is a bit of a one-pacer,' he said 'He keeps doing enough to convince me to persevere with him.' Meanwhile, Colvin said he is pleased with stable star Another One who resumes from a long spell at Randwick on Saturday. â– â– â– â– â– Trainer Lyndall Olson is hoping home track advantage can offset her queries as Gold Card and Zaru strive for success in one of the day's features. Gold Card and Zaru line up in the Corey Brown Cup at Taree just two weeks after the track was flooded. The heavy ground is just one query Olson has for the pair who appreciate soft tracks at this stage of their careers. 'As they have gotten older, they have shown they prefer soft tracks rather than the heavy,' Olson said. Gold Card kicked off his latest campaign with a win in the Hannam Cup over 1007m at Taree on March 17 before a five week gap into his next start when a three length seventh to Cassiel at Canterbury. A vintage @Aaronbullock90 ride sees Zaru take out Race 7 at Taree! â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) January 31, 2025 He steps up to 1250m in the Benchmark 82 race where he is a perfect four from four over the track and distance. 'It was a nice win over the 1000 metres then we went to Canterbury and he wasn't disgraced at all,' said Olson. 'I'm just a bit worried about the time he has had between runs. 'It's been just over six weeks between since his last race. Whether he needs the run or not. 'We have taken the three kilos off with Leanne Boyd aboard but he well and I expect him to run a nice race.' Zaru finished down the track when resuming under 61kg at Taree on May 13 but Olson isn't reading too much into that performance. 'It was hard to make ground from back in the field with his weight and also the 1000 metres was too short for him,' she said. 'We just had to find a race for him to kick off in. 'As he has gotten older, he is a become wiser and he doesn't like the heavy going any more. 'We've got Aaron Bullock back on and he does seem to have a way with him. 'Like Gold Card, he loves his home track.' Olson has no qualms about the track rating for Gold Melody after she scored a stylish win over 1250m on a Heavy 10 at home on May 13. The four-year-old is a strong chance again in the Benchmark 58 Handicap (1300m). 'She did really well to win last start. It was a nice ride from Anna (Roper),' she said. 'She has trained on really well and I think she is a good chance again from barrier one.'

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley set to farewell ‘extraordinary' mother Angela Braybrooks on Friday

Sussan Ley will farewell her 'extraordinary' mother Angela Braybrooks at a funeral in her hometown of Albury. Ms Braybrooks died just days after the Opposition Leader became the first woman to win a party room vote to leader the federal Liberal Party. The former mental health nurse will be farewelled by family and friends at St Matthew's Church in Albury on Friday. Several of Ms Ley's Coalition colleagues are also expected to attend. Ms Braybrooks died in Albury in the early hours of May 17 'comfortable and at peace'. Sharing the news of her mum's death, Ms Ley thanked staff at Riverwood Aged Care Facility, where Ms Braybrooks was receiving end of life care. Ms Ley paid tribute to her 'extraordinary' mother, and shared her gratitude that she was able to share a final Mother's Day with her late mum. 'Mum was a mental health nurse who helped so many people through her life. She taught me the values of resilience, self-reliance and persistence,' Ms Ley wrote in a social media post. 'Growing up in wartime Britain, Angela could never have dreamt that her daughter would become Australia's first female Leader of the Opposition, but because of her, that happened this week. 'Like so many of her generation, she weathered uncertain times with strength and determination. 'I have taken inspiration from her every single day of my life and I always will.' Ms Ley also opened up on the final days she spent with her mum. 'It was a gift of fate that I was able to share Mother's Day with my mum one last time on Sunday,' she wrote. 'On Monday night in Canberra, our parish priest organised a FaceTime call, telling Angela she had to 'hang on' to see one more special moment in her daughter's life. 'If she could do that, he promised her, 'we'll have champagne tomorrow'. 'On Tuesday, hours after I was afforded the enormous privilege by my Liberal colleagues of leading our party, I drove back down the Hume Highway to be at her bedside. 'While mum was no longer verbal, she watched every moment of my press conference. 'As I walked back into her room that afternoon, her eyes lit up with excitement. It was a moment I will treasure, forever.'
