Opposition Leader Sussan Ley set to farewell ‘extraordinary' mother Angela Braybrooks on Friday
Sussan Ley will farewell her 'extraordinary' mother Angela Braybrooks at a funeral in her hometown of Albury.
Ms Braybrooks died just days after the Opposition Leader became the first woman to win a party room vote to leader the federal Liberal Party.
The former mental health nurse will be farewelled by family and friends at St Matthew's Church in Albury on Friday.
Several of Ms Ley's Coalition colleagues are also expected to attend.
Ms Braybrooks died in Albury in the early hours of May 17 'comfortable and at peace'.
Sharing the news of her mum's death, Ms Ley thanked staff at Riverwood Aged Care Facility, where Ms Braybrooks was receiving end of life care.
Ms Ley paid tribute to her 'extraordinary' mother, and shared her gratitude that she was able to share a final Mother's Day with her late mum.
'Mum was a mental health nurse who helped so many people through her life. She taught me the values of resilience, self-reliance and persistence,' Ms Ley wrote in a social media post.
'Growing up in wartime Britain, Angela could never have dreamt that her daughter would become Australia's first female Leader of the Opposition, but because of her, that happened this week.
'Like so many of her generation, she weathered uncertain times with strength and determination.
'I have taken inspiration from her every single day of my life and I always will.'
Ms Ley also opened up on the final days she spent with her mum.
'It was a gift of fate that I was able to share Mother's Day with my mum one last time on Sunday,' she wrote.
'On Monday night in Canberra, our parish priest organised a FaceTime call, telling Angela she had to 'hang on' to see one more special moment in her daughter's life.
'If she could do that, he promised her, 'we'll have champagne tomorrow'.
'On Tuesday, hours after I was afforded the enormous privilege by my Liberal colleagues of leading our party, I drove back down the Hume Highway to be at her bedside.
'While mum was no longer verbal, she watched every moment of my press conference.
'As I walked back into her room that afternoon, her eyes lit up with excitement. It was a moment I will treasure, forever.'

This practice however, was causing issues, sometimes restricting breathing and movement, and creating back pain. Since returning to training, however, Lucas-Rodd said they are relishing the freedom of not needing a sports bra or chest bindings. 'Going out onto the track in our training guernseys or our singlets, I just feel so, so happy and so just like me,' they said. 'I had huge discomfort around my chest, huge dysphoria. It didn't match up with what I felt internally I should look like.' The halfback came out publicly as non-binary in 2023, saying at the time that they 'don't really identify strongly as my assigned gender at birth, which is female.' 'I don't really feel strongly that I fit into that label as a female, and at the same time I don't feel like I'm a male, either. I guess I'm in between that,' they said in a video shared on the Hawthorn website. 'So for me, the label 'non-binary' feels most comfortable about how I identify in terms of my gender.' Lucas-Rodd spoke to their Hawthorn teammates about the surgery when returning to training and said they were met with 'such love and acceptance'. While opening themselves up to public commentary by sharing their story has been nerve-racking, Lucas-Rodd said they hope to help others in a similar position. 'It's also to show gender diverse and trans people that there is a place for them in sport,' they said. 'Coming out publicly with top surgery, people will say and do what they want, but I'm trying to show people that no matter what gender you are, no matter how you express that, no matter anything about you, that you belong in sport and you belong in sport at a professional and elite level. 'That's a big thing for me … being like regardless of your gender and how you express that, there is this place for you in sport.' Lizzo reveals secret to her weight loss and finally sets the record straight on Ozempic use
It's about damn time. Lizzo has spoken about her weight loss journey - and clarified her Ozempic use - months after clapping back at rumours about the drug. 'I've tried everything,' the singer, 37, said on Trisha Paytas' Just Trish podcast on Thursday, per Page Six. The Grammy winner explained however that she abandoned the semaglutide, which has not been approved for use for weight loss in Australia, early into her journey. 'Ozempic works because you eat less food, yeah? So if you eat right, it makes you feel full,' she said. 'But if you can just do that on your own and get mind over matter, it's the same thing.' Ozempic is also associated with a number of side-effects including most commonly gastrointestinal disorders like nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting, in a way that doctor-approved changes to diet and exercise are not. Lizzo revealed that she saw the best results when she ditched her vegan diet. 'When I was vegan, I was consuming a lot of fake meats, I was eating a lot of bread, I was eating a lot of rice and I had to eat a lot of it to stay full,' she recalled. 'When I started actually eating whole foods and eating, like, beef and chicken and fish, I was actually full and not expanding my stomach by putting a lot of fake things in there that [weren't] actually filling me up,' the songwriter continued. She went on to defend those who use weightloss drugs. 'It's not easy,' Lizzo insisted. 'It's a drug to help somebody with something they're struggling with.' She added that 'telling someone they're cheating' is a 'way of being fatphobic.' According to the TGA in Australia, 'Ozempic has been included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. This means that the medicine has been evaluated by the TGA for its safety, quality and efficacy for that indication only.' Lizzo made headlines in September 2024 for hitting back at an Instagram hater questioning whether she was taking the type II diabetes drug. 'Whyyyy [sic] do u follow me?' she asked at the time. The following year, Lizzo explained that she had, instead, applied 'a calorie deficit' and cut 'sugary stuff' from her diet. 'Everybody's body is different,' she reminded her social media followers in April. 'Find out what works for you.'
