LNG Canada produces first liquefied natural gas for export, sources say

HOUSTON (Reuters) -The Shell-led LNG Canada project has produced the first liquefied natural gas for export from its facility in Kitimat, British Columbia, two people familiar with the startup of the plant told Reuters on Sunday.
"At 4 a.m. local time LNG Canada started producing its first LNG," one of the sources told Reuters.
The facility is the first large-scale Canadian LNG project to begin production and also the first major facility in North America with direct access to the Pacific coast, significantly reducing sail time to Asian markets.
When fully operational it will have a capacity to export 14 million metric tonnes per annum (mtpa), according to company statements.
LNG Canada did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The super-chilled gas is being produced from the facility's Train 1, which has capacity of 5.6 mtpa, and the first LNG cargo is expected to be shipped by the beginning of July, the two sources said.
Only a portion of the processing plant is operating, according to the two people. Train 1 has had difficulties with one of its lines and will only produce at half its capacity until the problem is solved, one of the sources said.
LNG tanker Gaslog Glasgow is approaching LNG Canada's Kitimat port, according to LSEG ship tracking data. The vessel is expected to arrive on June 29 and will be loaded with LNG, the sources said.
The LNG Canada project is a joint venture between Shell Plc, Petronas, PetroChina, Mitsubishi Corporation and Kogas.
Once the facility enters service, Canadian gas exports to the U.S. will likely decline, traders said, as Canadian energy firms will have another outlet for their fuel. For now, the U.S. is the only outlet for Canadian gas.
Canada exported about 8.6 billion cubic feet per day of gas via pipelines to the U.S. in 2024, up from 8.0 bcfd in 2023 and an average of 7.5 bcfd over the prior five years (2018-2022), according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That compares with a record 10.4 bcfd in 2002.

Statement by Prime Minister Carney on the passing of the Honourable John McCallum

Ottawa, On, June 22, 2025 /CNW/ - "Deeply saddened to learn of the passing of John McCallum, who was an inspiration, a mentor, and a friend. "John served Canada and academia with great distinction, helping us to find solutions to our biggest economic challenges, and always with good humour and grace. "As an exemplary public servant, economist, diplomat, and parliamentarian, John's contributions to Canada were as deep as they were diverse. Outside of politics, his ideas and analysis established him as one of Canada's foremost economists. As Chief Economist at the Royal Bank of Canada, his insights shaped national conversations on fiscal policy, growth, and competitiveness. "As a Member of Parliament, he brought that same purpose and conviction to public service. His leadership in Canada's Cabinet included serving as Minister of National Defence, Veterans Affairs, Immigration, and more. As Canada's Ambassador to China, he brought his expertise to shaping one of Canada's most consequential bilateral relationships. "John believed in Canada as a place of opportunity and enormous potential. With his values of humility and service, John leaves a lasting legacy to his community and country. With my deepest condolences to John's friends and family at this difficult time." This document is also available at SOURCE Prime Minister's Office View original content:

Receiver planning sale of Yukon gold mine involved in contaminant release disaster

The court-appointed receiver of a Yukon gold mine that suffered a catastrophic heap-leach facility failure last year says it plans to sell the mine and will be seeking approval within the week to start the process. In its fifth receiver's report issued earlier this month, PricewaterhouseCoopers Inc. says it will seek court approval for a sale process for the Eagle Gold Mine near Mayo, Yukon, in a motion scheduled to be heard Wednesday in an Ontario court. Eagle Gold Mine was the site last June where a containment failure at the heap-leach facility released about two-million tonnes of cyanide-laced ore and water into the environment. PricewaterhouseCoopers was made receiver of the mine last year by an Ontario court through an application by the Yukon government. In an email, the territory's government confirms the receiver is planning to begin a sales process by July for the Eagle Gold Mine, if it were to be approved by the court. But the territory also says it is "premature to say what the process will look like," stating that it will likely be "robust, transparent and fair" since it is subject to court supervision. "The Government of Yukon is a key stakeholder as the main mining regulator and lender to the Receiver, and it will ensure that the interests of Yukoners are protected and communicated to the Receiver," the government's statement said. "Right now, the focus of the government and the Receiver is to address environmental remediation and site safety." The Yukon government said earlier this month that the work is continuing at the mine site to manage additional water from the spring snowmelt, while water contaminated from the failure is being treated and discharged.
