Cape Cod restaurant news: Bar opens at Provincetown's Pilgrim Monument, bakery changes

Eat Cake 4 Breakfast has been purchased by the Nelson siblings. You may know the Nelsons ― Tori, 31, Tara, 30, and Todd F. Nelson Jr., or TJ, 25 ― from the summer of 2023 when they ran the Cousins Maine Lobster truck parked on Route 6A in Yarmouth Port or sometimes at Mashpee Commons.
The bakery's founder, Le Cordon Bleu alum Danielle Nettleton, brought her French training to Eat Cake 4 Breakfast when she opened in 2015 and earned a reputation for rich, layered croissants (chocolate and pistachio is a favorite), scones, cookies and Brewster Buns ― a cinnamon roll made with croissant dough.
For the past few weeks, Nettleton has been giving the Nelsons a crash course in baking. Although the new owners are, through their website eatcake4breakfast.com, looking to hire a full-time pastry chef, they also want to know how everything is made.
The siblings said they are aiming to re-open in early to mid-June, with all of Nettleton's specialties.
'We know how many people love this place and we want to keep it just the same for them,' TJ Nelson said.
But the new owners are also eventually looking to add some lunch sandwiches, fancy coffee drinks and gelato ― as well as extended hours. When they get to the point of adding some of their own baked goods, the siblings said, the first will be a chocolate snack cake with cream filling that they grew up making with their great aunt, Louise Romano, who died a few weeks ago.
Nettleton said Eat Cake 4 Breakfast sold for $1.35M with the property. She said she is moving to Litchfield County, Connecticut, to raise her daughter with the help of family.

The new Shallop Bar is open to serve craft cocktails or mocktails to anyone who has paid admission to Pilgrim Monument & Provincetown Museum or is a member of the nonprofit. Individual membership is $60 or $75 for two.
'Whether you're here for the view, the history or the vibe, this is your perfect pit stop,' organizers wrote. The Shallop Bar will be 'captained' by the monument's new food and beverage director Greg Whittle, according to the post.

Seventh-generation farmers John and Sarah Bartlett have opened a mainland location of the Nantucket farm that's been in their family for more than 200 years. The new farm is located at 2199 Main St. in West Barnstable on the land that was formerly Harvest Moon Farm. The farm will be open daily, selling seasonal produce, flowers and locally made goods, according to its website, bartlettsfarmwestbarnstable.com/.
"Rain, wind, and a full-blown nor'easter couldn't stop us from kicking off our first season in West Barnstable. We'll be here every day from 10 a.m.– 6 p.m., ready with farm-fresh goods, local favorites, and everything you need to brighten up this soggy start to the weekend," Bartlett Farm staffers wrote on the farm's Instagram.

Bio is currently serving his second term as president after a contested election two years ago in the coastal West African country. He was president when ECOWAS imposed severe sanctions on Niger following a coup two years ago. Niger cited the sanctions as one of the reasons for leaving the bloc. Sierra Leone was one of the countries that supported a military intervention in the country in 2023. At home, Bio is facing an ongoing synthetic drug crisis and a stagnating economy. Bio's new position comes as the region faces its most severe crisis in decades with jihadist forces controlling vast swaths of the Sahel, a semi-arid region south of the Sahara. In the past few years, ECOWAS has struggled with the departure of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger which have all faced military coups. All three juntas left the bloc, and created their own security partnership, the Alliance of Sahel States. They have cut ties with the traditional Western allies, ousting French and American military forces, and instead sought new security ties with Russia. The three countries have been the hardest hit by jihadist violence in recent years.

OCUFA Challenges Ontario Government's Narrative on Postsecondary Funding Crisis, Welcomes Review with Call for Meaningful Faculty Consultation
TORONTO, ON, June 21, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) today responded to the announcement by Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security (MCURES) Nolan Quinn of $55.8 million to expand teaching training seats across Ontario. While OCUFA welcomes any new investment in the postsecondary sector, the organization asserts that the Ontario government is not taking meaningful action to address the deep-seated financial crisis facing Ontario's world-class public universities. Minister Quinn highlighted that the investment would train up to 2,600 new teachers by 2027, prioritizing accelerated programs, French and technological education, and seats in northern, rural, Indigenous, and remote regions. However, when asked on the broader financial challenges confronting the sector, Minister Quinn attributed these issues to 'unilateral decisions' by the federal government regarding international student study permits. 'The financial struggles plaguing Ontario's postsecondary education sector are not a sudden development, nor are they solely a result of federal changes to international student permit caps', stated OCUFA President Nigmendra Narain. 'For decades, Ontario's universities have endured chronic underfunding, consistently ranking dead last in Canada in per-student funding. We are disappointed to see the Ontario Government downplay its own responsibility in supporting this vital sector.' OCUFA is deeply concerned that Ontario's universities are currently grappling with program closures, enrollment pauses, increasing precarity among faculty, and significant challenges in funding the province's most promising talent. The undergraduate programs that produce the students who enter teacher's college are not only underfunded, but are now facing cuts, limiting the academic preparation of teachers. While the $55.8 million for teaching pathways is a positive step, OCUFA emphasizes that these recent commitments only scratch the surface of the sector's needs. To simply reach Canada's national per-student funding average, Ontario requires an immediate investment of at least $2.78 billion, possibly more depending on the impact of declining international student enrolment. Without substantial and ongoing funding commitments, Ontario's position as a world leader in postsecondary education, research, and scholarship will continue to be at jeopardy. OCUFA welcomes the Minister's announcement that his ministry will be reviewing how funding is delivered across the postsecondary sector.
