Sayyid Shihab heads Oman's delegation at Arab Summit
BAGHDAD: On behalf of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, HH Sayyid Shihab bin Tarik al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for Defence Affairs chaired the Sultanate of Oman's delegation at the 34th Arab Summit and the Fifth Arab Economic and Social Development Summit, held on Saturday in Bagdad, the Republic of Iraq.
President Dr Abdul Latif Rashid of the Republic of Iraq, delivered a speech in which he warned that the specter of war threatens security and stability in the region. He noted that Baghdad Summit is being held amidst serious challenges endangering the region, the security of Arab nations and the fate of their peoples.
He emphasised Iraq's rejection of the forced displacement of Gaza's population under any pretext and stressed the necessity of unified Arab action in the current phase. He called for serious and responsible Arab efforts to save Gaza, reactivate UNRWA's role and ensure the delivery of aid to the Strip.
On his turn, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the death toll in Gaza is staggering and unacceptable, accusing Israel of violating international law. He stressed that what is happening in Gaza and the West Bank cannot be ignored.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed Oman's mediation in announcing a halt to attacks in the Red Sea, expressing hope for a political solution in Yemen. He also called for an end to the ongoing war in Gaza and rejected the forced displacement of its residents.
During his speech, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas asserted that Israel's killings and forced displacement are part of a broader plan to sabotage the two-state solution. He urged the adoption of an Arab-led initiative to achieve peace.
HH Sayyid Shihab was accompanied by an official delegation that comprised Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidy, Foreign Minister, Dr Abdullah bin Mohammed al Saeedi, Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, Dr Said bin Mohammed al Saqri, Minister of Economy, Abdullah bin Nassir al Rahbi, Ambassador of Oman to Egypt and its Permanent Representative to the Arab League and the Charge D'affaires of Oman's Embassy in Iraq. — ONA

'Unjust war of aggression', says Abbas Araghchi
GENEVA: In a powerful address to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned what he called an 'unjust war of aggression' by Israel and called for immediate global action. Representing 'a peace-loving nation of 100 million,' Araghchi accused Israel of launching unprovoked attacks on Iran since June 13, targeting off-duty military personnel, civilians, hospitals, infrastructure and even peaceful nuclear facilities under IAEA monitoring. 'This is a clear violation of international law and a grave war crime,' he stated. Citing Iran's right to self-defence under Article 51 of the Charter, Araghchi warned: 'We are determined to protect our sovereignty and security.' Araghchi said, "This is a historic moment for human civilisation when a civilised nation has come under an unjust war of aggression. The world, every State, every UN mechanism and body, has to be alarmed and has to act now to stop the aggressor, to end impunity and to hold the criminals accountable for their unending atrocities and crimes in our region." He mentioned that this is a call from someone who has allocated his whole life to dialogue and diplomacy, but who also, is a veteran of an imposed war by Saddam regime and knows how to defend his beloved mother land. He concluded with an urgent call to the international community: 'The time to act is now. This is a historic test for the UN and all who believe in justice and peace.'

Oman participates in League of Arab States meeting
ISTANBUL: The Sultanate of Oman on Saturday participated in the extraordinary meeting of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level which was held in Istanbul, Türkiye. The Sultanate of Oman's delegation was headed by Shaikh Khalifa bin Ali al Harthy, Under-Secretary of the Foreign Ministry for Political Affairs. The meeting condemned the Israeli aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran, which constitutes a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of a UN member state and a threat to regional peace and security. The meeting also underscored the need to halt the Israeli aggression and intensify regional and international efforts to reduce tensions towards achieving a ceasefire and comprehensive de-escalation. — ONA

War must not become refugee crisis, says UN
GENEVA: The United Nations said on Saturday the Iran-Israel war must not be allowed to trigger another refugee crisis in the Middle East, saying once people fled there was no quick way back. UNHCR, the UN's refugee agency, said the intensity of the attacks between the two sides was already triggering population movements in both countries. Such movements had already been reported from Tehran and other parts of Iran, it said, with some people crossing into neighbouring countries. Strikes in Israel had caused people to seek shelter elsewhere in the country and in some cases abroad. "This region has already endured more than its share of war, loss and displacement. We cannot allow another refugee crisis to take root," said Filippo Grandi, the UN high commissioner for refugees. "The time to de-escalate is right now. Once people are forced to flee, there's no quick way back -- and all too often, the consequences last for generations." Israel said on Saturday it had launched fresh air strikes against missile storage and launch sites in central Iran. Iran has responded with barrages which Israeli authorities say have killed at least 25 people. Iran hosts the largest number of refugees in the world -- around 3.5 million -- mostly of them from Afghanistan. If the conflict persists, Iran's existing refugee populations would also face renewed uncertainty and yet more hardship, UNHCR said. The agency called for an urgent de-escalation in the conflict and urged countries in the region to respect the right of people to seek safety. The Israeli government says the unprecedented wave of attacks it has launched at Iran since June 13 is aimed at preventing its rival from developing nuclear weapons -- an ambition Tehran strongly denies. Israel has maintained ambiguity about its own atomic arsenal, neither officially confirming nor denying it exists, but the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute says it has 90 nuclear warheads. — AFP
