Arab Economic Summit discusses food security

BAGHDAD: HH Sayyid Shihab bin Tarik al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for Defence Affairs, headed the Sultanate of Oman's delegation to the Fifth Arab Economic and Social Development Summit, which began on Saturday in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad with the participation of a number of heads of states and governments. The summit discussed the Arab food security file, developments in the Greater Arab Free Trade Area (GAFTA) and the completion of requirements for establishing the Arab Customs Union. The summit also discussed the executive plan for the Arab Water Security Strategy in the Arab region to address future challenges and requirements for sustainable development. The summit also reviewed the strategic framework and executive action plan for the Regional Programme for the Economic and Social Empowerment of Arab Women, among other issues. BAGHDAD: On behalf of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, HH Sayyid Shihab bin Tarik al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for Defence Affairs chaired the Sultanate of Oman's delegation at the 34th Arab Summit and the Fifth Arab Economic and Social Development Summit, held on Saturday in Bagdad, the Republic of Iraq. President Dr Abdul Latif Rashid of the Republic of Iraq, delivered a speech in which he warned that the specter of war threatens security and stability in the region. He noted that Baghdad Summit is being held amidst serious challenges endangering the region, the security of Arab nations and the fate of their peoples. He emphasised Iraq's rejection of the forced displacement of Gaza's population under any pretext and stressed the necessity of unified Arab action in the current phase. He called for serious and responsible Arab efforts to save Gaza, reactivate UNRWA's role and ensure the delivery of aid to the Strip. On his turn, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the death toll in Gaza is staggering and unacceptable, accusing Israel of violating international law. He stressed that what is happening in Gaza and the West Bank cannot be ignored. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed Oman's mediation in announcing a halt to attacks in the Red Sea, expressing hope for a political solution in Yemen. He also called for an end to the ongoing war in Gaza and rejected the forced displacement of its residents. During his speech, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas asserted that Israel's killings and forced displacement are part of a broader plan to sabotage the two-state solution. He urged the adoption of an Arab-led initiative to achieve peace. HH Sayyid Shihab and his accompanying delegation were received at Baghdad International Airport by Fuad Hussein, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq, Dr Hamid al Ghazi, Secretary-General of the Iraqi Council of Ministers, Qais Saad al Amri, Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to the Sultanate of Oman, Abdullah bin Nassir al Rahbi, Ambassador of Oman to Egypt and its Permanent Representative to the Arab League, the Charge D'affaires of Oman's Embassy in Iraq, some members of the embassy; and a number of Iraqi officials. — ONA

Iraq Assumes Presidency of Economic and Social Council

Iraq has assumed the presidency of the Economic and Social Council at the ministerial-level meeting in Baghdad, part of the preparations for the Fifth Arab Economic and Social Development Summit. The outgoing president, Lebanese Minister of Economy and Trade Amir Bisat, expressed confidence in Iraq's leadership. Taking over the presidency, Iraq's Minister of Trade, Mr. Athir Dawood Salman [Atheer Dawood Al-Ghurairi], emphasised the need for greater collective Arab efforts to build a resilient economy. The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, congratulated Iraq and stressed the importance of a unified Arab vision for economic integration. Full statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: The ministerial-level meeting of the Economic and Social Council, launched in Baghdad, as part of the preparations for the Fifth Arab Economic and Social Development Summit. The session opened with a speech by Mr. Amir Bisat, Minister of Economy and Trade of the Lebanese Republic and President of the Council's previous session. He highlighted key accomplishments achieved during Lebanon's tenure and underscored the importance of continued joint Arab action in addressing the region's pressing challenges. Minister Bisat officially handed over the presidency of the Council to the Republic of Iraq, expressing appreciation for Iraq's steadfast support of Arab causes, particularly its solidarity with Lebanon during times of hardship. He also conveyed his confidence in Iraq's ability to lead the Council with competence and ability. The Minister of Trade Mr. Athir Dawood Salman assumed the presidency of the current session and welcomed the participating Arab delegations to "Baghdad of Peace" and commended Lebanon for its constructive leadership in the previous session. In his remarks, Minister Salman emphasized that "the Arab nation stands at a historic juncture that calls for deepened collective efforts and greater self-reliance to build a robust and productive Arab economy capable of overcoming regional and global challenges." Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit congratulated Iraq on assuming the presidency and extended his best wishes for a successful term. He noted the rapid transformations taking place across the Arab economy and stressed the need for a unified Arab vision that promotes regional integration and market stability. Secretary-General Aboul Gheit also highlighted Iraq's positive trajectory and affirmed that the summit's agenda will focus on the region's most pressing economic and developmental priorities.
