Govt committed to 11.25% quota for SEBC in medical, tech colleges: Samal

(SEBC) in medical and technical institutions across the state, marking a significant step towards fulfilling a pre-election promise, party's state unit president Manmohan Samal said here on Tuesday.

ddressing a news conference, Samal said the govt would soon decide on expanding the reservation benefits after it approved a similar quota for admission in general undergraduate and postgraduate courses on May 14. "This is just the beginning of our commitment to ensuring constitutional rights for backward classes," Samal said, while criticising the stance of opposition parties on backward classes' welfare.
Samal accused both BJD and Congress of neglecting backward classes during their respective tenures. He particularly questioned BJD's handling of a 2017 Supreme Court case regarding the 50% reservation cap, stating, "While the BJD govt spent crores on lawyers for mining cases, they remained silent on OBC reservation matters."
Samal's statement comes a day before BJD plans a demonstration demanding 27% reservation of seats for the SEBC students.
Samal said though there is a provision of a 27% quota for other backward classes (OBCs) nationally, the 11.25% cap has been set in Odisha, complying with the SC guidelines under which the overall quota can't exceed 50%, and the state already has a 38.75% quota for SCs and STs together.
Samal said the BJP will fulfil all its manifesto promises. "While 11 of the 21 promises were fulfilled, the remaining 10 will be done within another six months," he said.

On the BJP promise of returning chit fund money to duped investors, Samal said the process is very much on, and the same would be definitely provided to 100% of the investors. He blamed the previous BJD govt for the delay, claiming crucial papers were misplaced.
Responding to Samal's statement on the reservation for backward classes, BJD MLA Arun Sahoo said the BJP has responded to BJD's demand for this quota, which is a welcome move.
"However, BJP has been traditionally opposed to backward classes' interests since the Mandal Commission days in the 1990s. Only time will tell if they will walk the talk," he said.
Former Union minister and Congress member Srikant Jena said the quota for backward classes should be a minimum of 27% both in education and jobs. "The govt should approach the SC and convince it of the situation in Odisha, which has a high percentage of SC, ST and backward class population," he said.
On Samal's promise to return chit fund money, BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty said the BJP has already failed as it promised to return the money within days of forming the govt. "The BJP chief is trying to mislead people by passing the blame onto BJD," he said.

The Tripura Government has started the process of distributing job offers to families whose members were killed in incidents of political violence before the incumbent alliance government came to power in 2018. Jobs were handed to 18 next of kin of the victims, which an official on Sunday (June 22, 2025) described as the first phase of such recruitment. 'A committee was constituted to provide government jobs to persons whose family members were victims of political murders. So far, the panel has received 39 applications, and out of these, 18 persons have been given jobs,' Tripura Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath said at a press conference. 'Several families couldn't even file FIRs with police, and many case records are missing,' he claimed. The BJP-led government in December 2020 announced a scheme to provide jobs to next of kin of those killed in political violence over a period of 46 years with 2018 as the cutoff year. Thereafter, some jobs were disbursed to the affected families, but not blockwise like now. A State Government official said 18 aspirants who were selected from the list recommended by a committee which was earlier set up to identify the victim families. 'The primary consideration for recruitment is based on the financial condition of the families, but all those lost kin would also be considered in the next phases,' the official stated. The apparent policy of the State Government is to support only non-left families who fell prey to violence during previous CPI(M)-led governments. The victims, according to the official assessment, had been connected with the Congress party, as it was the main Opposition party in the state before 2018. CPI(M), now in opposition, alleged that the policy of providing government jobs only to non-left families is 'inhumane', as scores of left supporters were killed in political violence. A party leader pointed to targeted killings of left leaders, workers and supporters during the 'repressive' five-year rule of the Congress-TUJS alliance government from 1988 to 1993. Shah's anti-English position harms India

Union Home Minister Amit Shah's denunciation of the English language is ill-conceived and uninformed, and will only work against the country's unity and development. Speaking at the launch of a book by a former civil servant in Delhi on Thursday, Shah said, ''The time is not far away for people speaking in English in the country to feel ashamed'. The prejudice against English is part of the ideology and politics of his party, and Shah has only given expression to it. He is right in saying that the languages of our country are the jewels of our culture, but wrong in dismissing the role of English as a linking and unifying language. He is also right in saying that we should take pride in our languages, but pride in one's own language need not translate into shame about another language. Languages are not zero sum games, and the knowledge of another language does not mean degradation or devaluation of the mother tongue. Languages gain by interaction. It is the official language in many states. India is also said to have the second largest English-speaking population in the world. It is difficult to imagine English losing its status in the near future, going by the people's attitude towards it. The usefulness and popularity of a language don't always depend on government policies. People's relationship with language is a sensitive matter and governments should handle it with care and caution. .Shah's tirade against English should also be seen in context of the efforts of the central government and the BJP to promote Hindi aggressively. This has resulted in apprehensions about domination of Hindi in non-Hindi states. English was the language of power in India during colonial times but after the British left, it serves as a link language, with an equal relationship with all languages of the country. The replacement of English would lead to its place being taken up by Hindi, which comes with political baggage. English is also India's window to the world in every respect, and closing that window would hurt and set the country back. Shah says India cannot be imagined with a foreign language. But the idea of India is not static--it has room for English, which is no longer considered a foreign language.
