Heavy rain fills Western Cape dams, allays fears of 'Day Zero'
The latest official dam level stats for the Western Cape show that cumulatively the six major dams in the province are well above 60% of capacity – and are continuing to rise.
The six major dams in the Western Cape – the Berg River, Steenbras Lower, Steenberg Upper, Theewaterskloof, Voelvlei and Wemmershoek – all saw increases as rain lashed the province in recent days and weeks.
The good news is that even more rain is forecast for the coming days as we rapidly approach the winter solstice.
The City of Cape Town (CoCT) uploaded its latest stats on Wednesday, 18 June.
The latest figures show the six dams are a combined 64.7% of total storage.
That's up from the 63.8% the previous week.
However, the current levels are down on the same period a year ago when the combined percentage stood at 66.4%.
Theewaterskloof, which accounts for more than 50% of the Western Cape's total dam capacity (480 188 MI of a total of 898 221 MI) is at 63.5% of capacity, while the next biggest dam, Voëlvlei (164 095 MI), is at 60.5%.

The Western Cape government has activated its disaster readiness plans as winter cold and wet conditions are forecast to persist into next week. The Provincial Disaster Management Centre also advised households to prepare emergency kits. A 'grab-and-go' kit should include identification documents, essential medicines, phone chargers, cash, and a first aid kit. 'Assess where you live, as your home may flood if you are near a river or if there is poor drainage,' the centre said. Authorities have emphasised the importance of heeding weather warnings from credible sources such as the South African Weather Service or local municipalities. Residents should evacuate early in flood-prone or low-lying areas and avoid driving or walking through floodwaters. 'Just 15 cm of fast-moving water can knock you down, and a depth of two feet can float a car,' the department warned. Contact with floodwater should also be avoided due to contamination of sewage, fuel, or chemicals. Bredell stressed the role of public cooperation: 'These men and women are trained to keep us safe, and they risk their own lives to do this. 35 Johannesburg areas to be affected by a power outage
City Power Johannesburg has scheduled a planned power outage that will affect 35 areas. The power outage will occur on Wednesday, 25 June 2025, at Nirvana, Nancefield Substations and Alexandra Substations. The power utility explained that the power outage is necessary to do maintenance work on its electricity network for better service provision to its customers.
