
Indian aviation set to grow by 10% by FY2026, but financial losses likely to persist: ICRA report

India's aviation sector is projected to continue growing in FY2026, with domestic air passenger traffic expected to rise by 7–10% year-on-year, reaching between 175 and 181 million passengers, according to a report by ICRA.
This projection follows a 7.6% increase in FY2025, when domestic traffic touched 165.4 million, marking a strong recovery at 16.8% above pre-pandemic levels recorded in FY2020.
However, despite the steady growth in passenger numbers, the industry is likely to remain in the red. ICRA estimates a net loss of Rs 20,000–30,000 crore in FY2026, in line with the losses expected for FY2025. This is a sharp contrast to the Rs 1,600 crore net profit posted in FY2024, said ANI citing the report.
According to the report, continued financial strain is being driven by elevated operating costs, including high aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices and increasing lease obligations tied to new aircraft acquisitions. While the interest coverage ratio—a measure of a company's ability to meet interest payments—is forecast to improve to between 1.5 and 2.0 times, it still reflects a cautious outlook.
On the international front, Indian airlines are also projected to see strong growth.

International passenger traffic is expected to increase by 15–20% in FY2026. In FY2025, Indian carriers flew 33.86 million international passengers, a 14.1% rise over the previous year and nearly 49% higher than the FY2020 figure.
Recent monthly data supports this growth trend. Domestic air travel in May 2025 was estimated at 14.36 million passengers, representing a 4.1% increase over May 2024. However, traffic remained largely stable compared to April 2025.
Airlines also expanded capacity by 5.1% year-on-year during the month.
Despite positive trends in traffic and capacity, ICRA cautioned that profitability will remain under pressure. Persistent high fixed costs, elevated fuel prices, and increased interest expenses from aircraft leasing are expected to weigh heavily on financial performance.
Additionally, carriers may face pressure on yields as they work to sustain high passenger load factors amid rising operating costs.

Air India has voluntarily decided to continue with enhanced pre-flight checks and will not release any aircraft for service 'where there is any doubt', the Tata group airline's CEO Campbell Wilson wrote in a message to the carrier's employees a week after the deadly crash of an Air India Boeing 787-8 aircraft in Ahmedabad. Wilson also reiterated that Air India is cooperating completely in the air crash investigation as it is 'vital that the facts, whatever they may be, are known'. Wilson also said that even though a tragic crash has taken place, Air India's ambition on all counts, including safety and quality, stays the same, 'if not higher than before'. He also assured staff that Air India continues to have the full support of both its shareholders—Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines. 'We have completed the additional precautionary checks on our operating Boeing 787 fleet as requested by the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation), who have publicly declared that they meet required standards. We have also, as a matter of abundant precaution, voluntarily decided to continue additional pre-flight checks for the time being. Where there is any doubt, we will not release aircraft—of any type—for service,' Wilson told staff. An Air India Boeing 787-8 aircraft—operating flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed moments after take-off last Thursday. The ill-fated aircraft had 242 people on board, but only one survived the accident. There were several casualties on the ground as well. This was the worst aviation disaster involving an Indian airline in at least four decades, and the first-ever crash of the Boeing 787 anywhere in the world. The crash is being investigated by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). 'This has been a tragic event and we will learn whatever we can from it so that we are stronger in future. However, our aim in every respect, be it safety, quality, service, scale, reach, professionalism or any other dimension, remains the same if not higher than before,' Wilso said. The Air India CEO also dismissed speculation that Air India management was absent at the last rites of the crew of the doomed flight, assuring employees that the airline had 'senior representation' at each service. 'You may have read social media commentary on the perceived lack of visibility of Air India at the services held for our colleagues. I can assure you that we have had senior representation at each and every one. We are, however, taking care that our presence does not cause disruption at a time so important for families and loved ones, as a matter of respect,' he stated. Wilson said that he had met many Air India staff members who had some similar questions about the crash. In his communication to staff on Friday, the Air India CEO attempted to answer some of those. 'There are many theories (about why the aircraft crashed) but, as the accident is now under official investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, it is not appropriate for us to comment or speculate. We are providing all information requested by the AAIB and are cooperating completely. It is vital that the facts, whatever they may be, are known so that we and the industry at large can learn from them,' Wilson said. On the question of when the investigation report is expected, Wilson said: 'This is completely up to the AAIB. The final report can take many months, though the AAIB may choose to issue interim updates or reports. If there is any discovery during the investigation that suggests airlines or suppliers need to change something urgently, we have confidence that such information would be shared quickly. For our part, we will be transparent with what is shared with us'. Wilson also reiterated that Air India and the Tata group will continue supporting the families of victims 'long after the work in Ahmedabad is done for'. 'This is equally true for those of our colleagues, who we will support in the same way. We are also supporting those staff who have served in Ahmedabad upon their return to base with a mandatory break and counselling. The counselling services, which are confidential and provided by professionals, continue to be available to everyone and I encourage you to avail of it,' Wilson said. Ten students from Bulandshahr's Sakhni village in UP have been unreachable since the recent missile strikes in Iran. Among them is 22-year-old Sadaf Zehra, a third-year MBBS student at Tehran University. Her father, Zia-ul-Hassan, said, "She said she was fine, then her phone went off. The next day she called and said the university had moved them to a safer location three hours away." Azhar Abbas, another student, survived a missile strike that claimed five of his classmates. "We spoke to him in a video call three days ago," said his uncle, Muzammil Abbas. "Since then, there has been no contact." Abbasi Beghum, 60, experienced dangerous blood pressure levels upon hearing about the attacks. "I lost my husband three years ago. I worked hard to send my son abroad." Across UP, numerous families face similar situations. Several pilgrims from Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi and Meerut were stranded in Iran, including 28 pilgrims from Lucknow, amongst them 83-year-old Kaneez Haider. The group had departed for Iraq on May 27 and entered Iran on June 9, planning to visit Karbala, Mashhad, Tehran, Nishapur and Kashan. Many had initially completed Haj, concluding with Eid on Monday, before proceeding to Iran - a typical route for Shia pilgrims visiting religious shrines. Tour operator Aqeel Jafar Rizvi of Mehndi Tours and Travels reported over 1,000 pilgrims from Lucknow in Iran, many experiencing financial difficulties and limited medicine access. Families in Kithaur's Isapur area of Meerut confirmed 11 additional pilgrims, including families with children, remain stranded.

Centre flags possible tax evasion as Indian funds in Swiss banks triple to Rs 38,000 crore
Amid reports that Indian funds in Swiss banks tripled to Rs 38,000 crore in 2024, the Centre said it is closely monitoring possible tax evasion, leveraging various information exchange mechanisms with Switzerland on foreign assets and income. In a statement issued on Friday, the finance ministry said that India regularly receives information about such foreign accounts and assets from 100+ tax jurisdictions, including Switzerland. It further said that Switzerland has been providing annual financial information about Indian residents since 2018 under the Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) framework. The first data transmission to Indian authorities occurred in September 2019, and the exchange has continued regularly since then, covering even those accounts suspected of involvement in financial irregularities. According to a Swiss National Bank report, money parked by Indians in Swiss banks more than tripled in 2024, reaching 3.54 billion Swiss francs, or Rs 37,600 crore. Elaborating the mechanism to check tax evasion, the finance ministry has said that the tax department regularly undertakes a systematic review of data so received and identifies taxpayers, whose cases require further verification.
