El Pasoan returns home to film narratives on U.S.-Mexico border
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — An El Paso filmmaker is returning home in hopes of 'reframing narratives surrounding the U.S.-Mexico border.'
The El Paso Community Foundation is welcoming Valeria Contreras back home as the new artist for the Border Art Residency (BAR) for the spring and summer seasons.
The BAR is an El Paso Community Foundation project that 'enables artists to pursue their craft without the worry of immediate sales or an outside job to pay for housing expenses,' according to a news release by the foundation.
The residency provides artists like Contreras a six-month retreat for creative work with a fully furnished living space and work studio in El Paso's historic Five Points neighborhood, a monthly stipend, and paid utilities, the release said.
Contreras is an award-winning filmmaker and a University of Chicago and Columbia University graduate.
She has received the Michael Hausman/Buffalo Mike Filmhaus Foundation Award and the 3Pas Studios Award, according to the news release.
In addition, Contreras has served on the Young Mezcal Jury at the Festival Internacional de Cine en Guadalajara and is the founder of her independent production company, Apis Mellifera Productions.
Apil Mellifera Productions is collaborating with different filmmakers worldwide, including from the U.S., Colombia, Nigeria and Canada, according to the El Paso Community Foundation.
Currently, Contreras is developing a feature film screenplay, 'Oranges,' that is set in El Paso.
'After growing up in this community, I am passionate about reframing narratives surrounding the U.S.-Mexico border. With 'Oranges,' I aim to highlight connections — family, love, and shared experiences — rather than the often-emphasized themes of separation, violence, and chaos. The story explores the relationship between two sisters and their sense of movement across time, anchoring their story with the historic El Paso streetcars,' Contreras said.
Contreras' first short film, 'Homesick,' screened at festivals, including Femme Frontera and the Oscar-qualifying Atlanta Film Festival, according to the El Paso Community Foundation.
To donate to the El Paso Community Foundation or to learn more about the Border Art Residency, you can visit the foundation's website, visit the BAR's website, or call (915) 533-4023.

Woman Told Adopted Dog Is Chihuahua-Border Collie, People Aren't Convinced
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A woman's roommate recently adopted a dog, but when she found out the breed mix, she had her suspicions. Sarah, who is known on TikTok as @hitthecurbb, told Newsweek via TikTok that her roommate, Susan, saw a picture of the small dog and immediately fell in love with it. Susan adopted her, thinking the dog was a Chihuahua; however, Sarah thought otherwise. "I was personally suspicious that she was a mix of some kind with either a Border collie or cattle dog due to her behavior," Sarah said. "My roommate then looked at her chart and realized she was mixed with a Border collie." Sarah said her roommate must have missed the full breed listing on the chart originally, getting drawn in by the dog's adorable photo. But the pup, Miss Frizzle, was listed as half-Chihuahua and half-Border collie, a surprising and unusual mix. She revealed in a May 20 TikTok video the now-famous Miss Frizzle. Sarcastically, she kept asking how one could tell this pup is a Border collie, as the black-and-white dog timidly came closer. The animal looked up at her with giant eyes, accepting all the pets. Screenshots of a woman showing off her roommate's dog, Miss Frizzle, who is a half-Chihuahua and half-Border collie mix. "She jumps off surfaces and lands perfectly on her feet; she is good at puzzles; she has endless energy for playing; and she crawls and crouches down like a Border collie," Sarah said. "According to my roommate, she also herds!" Viewer Reactions The TikTok video amassed over 129,300 views and 18,900 likes as of Monday, with the comment section showing viewers split between whether or not you can see the Border collie in Miss Frizzle by looking at her. "Hey, sorry, that is actually a Chinchilla. Hope this helps!" joked one user. Another added: "What a cutie. Bred to herd guinea pigs." A third person wrote: "She's herding dust bunnies when you're not looking." But many thought the signs were obvious: "All these people saying 'she has no Border collie' have never seen one before—the body language alone lmaoooo [laughing my a** off] it's so funny how they all act exactly the same." Alan Ritchson Relies on One Simple Workout Tool to Fuel His Upper-Body Training
Alan Ritchson Relies on One Simple Workout Tool to Fuel His Upper-Body Training originally appeared on Men's Fitness. Alan Ritchson isn't wasting any time getting ready for Season 4 of Reacher, sharing a clip of his EZ-bar upper-body superset workout on social media. Reacher's fourth season was confirmed this week, with filming presumably already underway. And as Ritchson shared in a social media post a couple of weeks ago, Season 4 is going to be Reacher's most intensely physical season yet. "My body is ready," he wrote in an Instagram caption. But the grind never packed on 30 pounds of muscle to land the role of Jack Reacher, transforming into a shredded action star. Before Reacher, his go-to moves were bodyweight dips, pushups, pullups, situps, and sprints. Now, he's leaned into resistance training—and it shows. In the new clip, Ritchson knocks out a high-volume upper-body superset using just an EZ-bar. ' "Low(ish) weight + higher volume = hypertrophy and longevity," he writes. "I can't get pregnant or injured right now. Too busy. This works for me." When it comes to supersets, sticking to one piece of equipment makes for quick, seamless transitions while keeping your heart rate up. Ritchson work through four total sets, cranking out high reps for maximum pump. Try it for yourself. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and grip the EZ-bar with an underhand grip. Keep your elbows close to your sides and curl the bar toward your shoulders. Squeeze at the top, then lower the bar slowly. Hold the EZ-bar overhead with both hands on the inner angled grips. Keeping elbows close to your head, lower the bar behind your neck by bending at the elbows. Press it back up, extending your arms fully. Grip the EZ-bar with palms facing your body and arms extended. Pull the bar straight up to chest height, leading with your elbows. Pause, then lower it back down. Keep the bar close to your body and avoid shrugging your Ritchson Relies on One Simple Workout Tool to Fuel His Upper-Body Training first appeared on Men's Fitness on Jun 13, 2025 This story was originally reported by Men's Fitness on Jun 13, 2025, where it first appeared.
