1 person arrested after allegedly firing pellet gun at park in La Union, New Mexico
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A male suspect was arrested after he allegedly fired off a pellet gun and then resisted arrest during a movie at the park event Saturday night, June 21 in La Union, New Mexico, Doña Ana County Sheriff Kim Stewart said. The incident happened at about 10 a.m. on Saturday at a park on Mercantil Avenue in La Union. People who had been attending a movies at the park event called to report a person walking around with a gun. There were also reports that the person had fired rounds, Stewart said. DASO and Anthony Police units responded. The subject was located and identified as Isaiah Gomez, no age given. He admitted to firing a pellet gun, which was recovered, Stewart said. No one was injured in the incident. The suspect was arrested and is facing a charge of aggravated assault when he allegedly and repeatedly kicked a deputy, Stewart said. Gila National Forest closes part of its land due to Trout Fire
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Gila National Forest has issued a public safety closure order for part of its land and recreation sites threatened by the Trout Fire that is burning north of Silver City. The closure area is south and west of New Mexico Highway 35, north of Allie Canyon Trail, Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, Signal Peak Trail, and Tadpole Ridge Trail, and east of Sheep Corral Canyon Trail and Forest Road 4083V in the Sheep Corral area, the Gila National Forest said. The fire was estimated to be 2,170 acres at 0 percent containment as of Friday morning, June 13. Trout Fire burning north of Silver City at 2K acres, 0% containment All National Forest system lands within the closure area are closed to public entry, including developed recreation sites along New Mexico Highway 35 including Allie Canyon Trailhead, Sapillo Continental Divide National Scenic Trail Trailhead, Railroad Canyon Trailhead, Pictograph Canyon Trailhead, Purgatory Chasm Trailhead, Sapillo Group Campground, Mesa Campground, Upper End Campground, Lake Roberts Day Use Area, Lake Roberts Picnic Area, Vista Ruins Picnic Area, and the Lake Roberts Recreation Area. Additionally, Grant County Sheriff's Office issued a 'Go' evacuation order for private properties along the western end of New Mexico Highway 35, from Sapillo Campground west to the Highway 15/35 intersection, on both sides of the highway. City to offer free measles vaccines at Juneteenth event
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The City of El Paso Public Health Department will offer free measles (MMR) vaccines during the Juneteenth celebration this weekend. The event will be from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 14 at Nations Tobin Park, 8831 Railroad Dr. City officials also remind residents to regularly check the Measles Information Dashboard for updates on confirmed cases, demographic data, and vaccination status. The dashboard is updated daily around 9 a.m. and is available at under the Measles information page. The City also said that anyone who was at El Paso International Airport from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. May 31 and June 1-2 should monitor their symptoms and check their immunization status. Eastwood High School getting new principal
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Eastwood High School is getting a new principal. Ysleta Independent School District announced the appointment of Robert Robledo as the new principal at Eastwood, effective July 1. Robledo, the current principal of the K-8 Eastwood Knolls International School, began his career in education in 2006 as an English teacher at Ysleta High School. He went on to serve as assistant principal at three high schools – including Bel Air and Riverside high schools – before moving to Eastwood Knolls IS in 2022 to serve as principal. Under Robledo's leadership, Eastwood Knolls IS maintained its standing as a high-performing, 'A'-rated campus by the Texas Education Agency, earning numerous distinctions in language arts, social studies, growth, postsecondary readiness, and closing the gaps, Ysleta ISD said. Robledo has a bachelor's degree in communication studies from the University of Texas at El Paso and a master's degree in school administration from Sul Ross State University. El Paso mayor: Planned protests need to be peaceful
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — With demonstrations scheduled all over the country on Saturday, June 14, Mayor Renard Johnson is urging El Pasoans who plan to rally to 'protest peacefully and make their voice heard.' More than 1,800 communities are expected to host 'No Kings' rallies and protests to counter a military parade and birthday celebration for President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C. This also comes in the shadow of the protests that have been going in Los Angeles. The Trump Administration has sent 4,000 National Guard and 700 Marines to counter the protests which have seen some sporadic violence. 'I encourage El Pasoans to come together in a spirit of nonviolence, mutual respect, and shared purpose.' Johnson said. Here is Johnson's statement in its entirety: 'As your mayor, I want to speak directly to the people of El Paso ahead of the demonstrations expected this Saturday. 'We honor the constitutional right of every individual to protest peacefully and make their voice heard. In this moment of heightened emotion across the country and in our own city, I encourage El Pasoans to come together in a spirit of nonviolence, mutual respect, and shared purpose. 'El Paso has long been a city defined by unity and resilience. Let's continue to lead by example — showing that even in times of concern or disagreement, we can gather peacefully to express our values and our hopes for the future. 'In coordination with El Paso Police Chief Pacillas, we have developed a comprehensive public safety plan to ensure that demonstrations are conducted safely and lawfully.
