West Bengal Govt Distributes Jagannath Prasad, BJP Questions HIDCO's Role Over Fund Allocation

The West Bengal government is distributing prasad from the new Jagannathdham temple to over 10 million households. The BJP alleges misuse of HIDCO funds.
Amid allegations that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's government diverted funds through the state-owned HIDCO, the West Bengal administration has begun distributing 'prasad' from the newly inaugurated Jagannathdham temple in Digha to more than 10 million households across the state.
The BJP leadership has alleged that public funds were routed through the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (HIDCO) for this initiative.
'At the gracious initiative of Smt. @MamataOfficial, the divine Mahaprasad of Lord Jagannath from Digha is now reaching homes across Bengal. From today until 27th June, you can collect your sacred Prasad box from your nearest ration shop," the TMC posted on X.
'The mandate of the HIDCO is to construct buildings for the government. This is why we did not say anything when it constructed the temple. But how can it spend such an amount to distribute prasad to households?" asked Jagannath Chattopadhyay, West Bengal BJP general secretary.
The BJP has hinted at legal action, saying it will go to court for the source of money spent on sweets, not religious misrepresentation.
Chattopadhyay stated that the state government has already allocated Rs 32 crore to various district magistrates and the Kolkata municipal commissioner for procuring sweets like goja and peda. An additional Rs 10 crore is expected to be disbursed, taking the total to Rs 42 crore, which will be spent by HIDCO to distribute sweets as prasad to the people of the state.
Vishwa Hindu Parishad's Vinod Bansal called it 'cultural misappropriation". The BJP also accused the state of politicising Hindu festivals. It said that the 'government is misusing public money for religious optics" and further demanded an investigation into HIDCO's role.
According to the sources, the BJP may also write to the Election Commission, seeking an audit of the funds used.
The authenticity of the prasad has also been questioned. BJP leaders alleged that the sweets are being made by minority-owned units. 'This is not traditional prasad, but commercially prepared sweets — misleading and disrespectful," the BJP said.
CM Banerjee had directed that prasad from the temple be distributed to people across the state during its inauguration on April 30. The distribution is carried out through the public distribution system, which typically provides subsidised food grains. On certain occasions, TMC leaders have been seen delivering the prasad door to door.
Each packet of prasad, which costs Rs 20, contains two sweets and a photograph of the temple along with the deities — Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra. The temple, built over 20 acres of land, resembles the 12th-century famous Jagannath temple of Puri, and there has been a controversy over the use of the phrase 'Jagannath Dham".

Teenager killed by ‘crude bomb hurled during TMC victory rally' in Kaliganj
A 13-year-old girl was killed in an explosion in West Bengal's Kaliganj on Monday, allegedly after a crude bomb was hurled during a Trinamool Congress (TMC) victory rally following the party's bypoll win. The student was found with an injury on her neck on the verandah of her home in Barochandgar village, an area known to be a Congress-CPM stronghold. She later succumbed. Residents allege that the bomb was thrown from a TMC victory procession targeting a CPM supporter's house. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock and grief over the incident. In a statement, she said: 'I am shocked and deeply saddened at the death of a young girl in an explosion at Barochandgar in Krishnanagar police district. My prayers and thoughts are with the family in their hour of grief. Police shall take strong and decisive legal action against the culprits at the earliest.' Superintendent of Police, Krishnanagar, K Amarnath, told The Indian Express, 'One person has been detained and an investigation is underway. The body was found on the verandah and has been sent for autopsy.' A senior police official, on condition of anonymity, said prima facie it appeared to be a crude bomb. 'No splinters were recovered from the site. While it happened during a victory rally, all angles are being investigated,' the official added. The Election Commission has sought a report on the incident. The girl's mother blamed the TMC for the attack. 'They had been hurling bombs since morning. Those who did this are from the TMC. We are CPM supporters. My whole family votes for CPM,' she said. The West Bengal Police, in a statement on social media, said: 'Today, a 13-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries sustained from an explosion in Kaliganj PS area of Krishnanagar police district. We shall spare no effort to nab the culprits behind this extremely unfortunate death. Raids are on in full swing. Our thoughts are with the family.' The incident has triggered a political row. CPM state secretary Mohammad Selim hit out at the ruling party, questioning the TMC's oft-quoted slogan 'Badla noi, badal chai' (No revenge, we want change), and demanded accountability from its leadership. 'Not speeches, not sweets – bombs were thrown in the name of 'victory' in a bypoll! A minor girl was blown to death even before counting ended in Kaliganj. AAP's Gopal Italia secured victory in Visavadar whilst BJP's Rajendra Chavda claimed the Kadi seat on Monday as the Gujarat constituency bypoll counting concluded. In Punjab's Ludhiana West assembly seat, AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora showed promising leads, maintaining a 7,000-vote advantage over Congress contender Bharat Bhushan Ashu. Regarding Ludhiana West results, Kejriwal noted that Punjab's residents have demonstrated increased support compared to 2022, indicating their satisfaction with the government's performance. "The people of Gujarat are now fed up with BJP and they are seeing hope in Aam Aadmi Party," he posted on X in Hindi. Expressing gratitude to Punjab and Gujarat residents, Kejriwal emphasised the electorate's rejection of both BJP and Congress in these bypolls. "Many congratulations to all of you on the splendid victory of Aam Aadmi Party in Visavadar seat of Gujarat and Ludhiana West seat of Punjab. Many congratulations and many thanks to the people of Gujarat and Punjab. In both the places, the victory margin has been almost double as compared to the last election," Kejriwal posted on X in Hindi. "Both the parties, Congress and BJP, contested the elections together in both the places. Both of them had the same objective - to defeat AAP. But people rejected both these parties in both the places," he stated in the post. The AAP headquarters in Delhi witnessed celebratory scenes as party workers distributed laddoos to mark their dual victories.
