New Delhi [India] June 20 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hailed Indian archer Juyel Sarkar, who won a Silver Medal in the Recurve Men's Team event at the Archery Asia Cup Stage 2, 2025, held at Singapore on Friday. Mamata Banerjee posted on her X handle, 'Proud to share that Juyel Sarkar, an archer from our government 's Bengal Archery Academy, Jhargram, has won today the Silver Medal in the Recurve Men's Team event at the Archery Asia Cup Stage 2, 2025, held at Singapore. Congratulations to Juyel, congratulations to his family and trainers, too. The Malda boy was the sole archer who won a Gold Medal from West Bengal at the last National Games held at Uttarakhand in February 2025 in the same Recurve event.' A youthful Indian archery contingent delivered an impressive performance at the second leg of the Archery Asia Cup 2025 in Singapore, clinching a total of nine medals, two gold, six silver, and one bronze, as per The second stage concluded on Friday at the Bukit Gombak Stadium, with India continuing their strong run from the Bangkok leg earlier this year, where they topped the medal tally with eight podium finishes, including five golds. Kushal Dalal was once again the standout performer. After bagging both individual and team titles in Bangkok, he maintained his fine form by securing the gold medal in the men's individual compound event, defeating Australia's Joshua Mahon 149-143 in the final. In the same category, India added a bronze through Sachin Chechi, who edged past Bangladesh's Himu Bachhar 148-146. The women's compound final turned into an all-Indian battle, with Tejal Salve narrowly beating Shanmukhi Naga Sai Budde 146-144 to take the gold. Budde, however, added another medal to her tally later, teaming up with Dalal in the compound mixed team final. The pair fought hard but fell just short, losing 155-153 to Kazakhstan's Adel Zhexenbinova and Andrey Tyutyun, settling for silver. Indian archers reached five out of six team finals and featured in two of the four individual gold medal matches, highlighting the depth and consistency of the young squad. In the compound women's team event, the trio of Budde, Salve, and Tanishka Nilkumar Thokal narrowly missed gold, losing to Malaysia in a dramatic shootoff after a 232-232 tie. The final was decided 29-26 in Malaysia's favour. The men's compound team of Dalal, Ganesh Thirumuru, and Mihir Nitin Apar also earned silver after a close 231-235 defeat to Kazakhstan. In recurve, India ended as runners-up in the mixed team event. Vishnu Choudhary and Vaishnavi Babarao Pawar went down 6-0 to Indonesia's Arif Pangestu and Ayu Mareta Dyasari in the final. The men's recurve team, Choudhary, Paras Hooda, and Juyel Sarkar, impressed in the early rounds but couldn't overcome Japan in the title clash, also losing 6-0. Notably, the Indian contingent in Singapore consisted entirely of Under-21 archers, with senior stars like Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Deepika Kumari giving the event a miss. Among the many highlights, the Indian women's compound team set a new U-21 world record in the qualification round, amassing 2101 points. Salve, Budde, and Thokal broke their own previous record of 2076 set in 2023. Over 200 archers from 21 nations took part in the second Archery Asia Cup 2025, showcasing some of the best emerging talent in the continent. (ANI)

‘Fruit of decade-long activism': Nepali listed as optional subject for West Bengal Civil Service exam

By Debasmita Chowdhury The West Bengal government has included Nepali as an optional subject in the West Bengal Civil Service (WBCS) 2025 Mains examination, fulfilling sustained demands by the Gorkha community. Hindi and Santhali were made 'compulsory language' subject options, according to a June 17 notification by the state's Personnel and Administrative Reforms department. Recognised as an official language in the state since 1961 and listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, Nepali had previously not been on the list of optional subjects of the examination. However, its availability as a compulsory subject for the preliminary examinations has continued this year. The move means that students with degrees in Nepali and its native speakers will be able to use the optional subject to their advantage instead of resorting to unrelated subjects for the main examination. This had sparked protests over the years, especially in the Darjeeling hills. 'This decision comes after strong and sustained efforts, which I had been following up on since 2021. This year, I had reached out to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on May 31, requesting her to ensure justice for Gorkha, Adivasi and Hindi-speaking communities, accompanied by strong representation from various stakeholders, including the Hills Student Union (HSA), North Bengal University, and the All Bengal Adivasi Students' Association (ABASA),' said Raju Bista, Darjeeling MP from the BJP in a statement. He called the move a reaffirmation of Articles 14, 15, and 16 of the Constitution, which guarantee equality and non-discrimination. 'Let this decision mark the beginning of more inclusive and sensitive policy-making that reflects the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of the state, particularly our Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars region,' Bista said. Until now, students who studied subjects like Physics or Bengali could opt for them in WBCS, but those with degrees in Nepali were denied that option, forcing them to choose unrelated subjects. Upendra M Pradhan, Editor of The Darjeeling Chronicle, said, 'The Constitution of India guarantees the right to equality, but the Gorkhas had been deprived of this right. The inclusion of Nepali as an optional subject in the WBCS examination, finally, after decade-long activism by Gorkha students, youth politicians, showcases the disconnect Kolkata has towards the people of Darjeeling hills, Terai, and Dooars, particularly the Gorkhas. This is something that should have been done automatically, but they had to struggle.' The writer is an intern with The Indian Express

Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar detained twice in a day; BJP slams 'repressive' Mamata government

KOLKATA: Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar on Friday alleged that he was obstructed by the police twice in a row on the same day. Dr Majumdar accused Kolkata Police of resisting BJP's attempts to observe 'Pashchimbanga Divas' by trying to stop a two-wheeler rally led by him from reaching Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's residence on Elgin Road in south Kolkata. Later, he was stopped again while on his way to meet a doctor at the latter's residence in the Bhowanipur area. When the doctor, identified as Rajat Subhra Banerjee, went down the road to meet the Union Minister, he was also picked up in a police car. Both were detained and taken to Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters. Protesting 'the repressive behaviour of the autocratic Mamata Banerjee Government', the state BJP has called for blockades, demonstrations, and movements in every district centre today and tomorrow. Notably, Dr Rajat Subhra Banerjee had last year asked a few questions to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during an interaction at Kellogg College in London regarding the present situation in West Bengal. According to political observers, the incident had put the state government in an awkward position.

Calcutta HC stays Mamata govt's financial relief scheme for non-teaching staff who lost jobs after SC order

KOLKATA: The Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered an interim stay till September 26 on the West Bengal government's financial scheme to provide interim relief for Group C & D non-teaching employees in state-aided schools, who had recently lost their jobs following the Supreme Court order on April 3. Justice Amrita Sinha in the interim order prohibited the state from implementing the scheme till September 26 or until further orders. Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced a monthly honorarium of Rs 25,000 and Rs 20,000 for some 5,000-odd Group C and D non-teaching employees in state-aided schools who had lost their jobs after the apex court's ruling. The Calcutta High Court's order is related to the West Bengal government's notification providing monthly interim relief of Rs 25,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively to them. Justice Sinha on Friday directed the petitioners to file affidavits within four weeks. The West Bengal government will file an affidavit in reply within a fortnight thereafter before the petition comes up for the next hearing. The waitlisted candidates had filed the petition in the High Court urging for a stay on the state government's relief scheme arguing that the scheme 'frustrated' the Supreme Court order. Reacting to the High Court order, the Trinamool Congress attacked the opposition parties and labelled them as 'real enemies of people of Bengal'. The party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, 'After the Supreme Court's order, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee extended an interim financial allowance to the affected Group-C and Group-D workers. But the Bangla-Birodhi brigade (anti-Bengal brigade) ran to the Calcutta High Court and got it struck down.' He further added, 'They won't help the people, and they won't let anyone else help either. They are enemies of Bengal. Enemies of our people. Plain and simple.'
