Former New York Jets LB C.J. Mosley retires from the NFL
CJ Mosley has called it a career.
The five-time Pro Bowler has retired from the NFL. The 33-year-old, who last played in the league with the New York Jets last season, announced he's hangin' them up on Thursday:
Mosley has been a free agent since March. The Jets released him in March after he missed much of the 2024 season due to various injuries including a neck problem. Mosley being sidelined did allow Jamien Sherwood to step into the lineup and become the top linebacker on New York's defense.
According to ESPN, Mosley was designated as a post-June 1 cut, which means his remaining dead-cap hit will be spread across the next two years. Those totals are $8.8 million this year and $7.7 million in 2026.
Mosley joined the Jets via a five-year, $85 million deal in 2019. Mosley earned three-straight Pro Bowls with the Baltimore Ravens before heading to New York. From 2019 to 2024, Mosley only earned one Pro Bowl with the Jets.
Jets Wire will continue to provide updates throughout the 2025 offseason.

49ers Running Back Room Clears Top 15 in Recent Rankings
49ers Running Back Room Clears Top 15 in Recent Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Francisco 49ers are hoping for a resurgent season in 2025 from running back Christian McCaffrey. What the 49ers need is the 2023 version of McCaffrey, who led the league with 1,459 rushing yards and added 14 rushing touchdowns. He caught 67 passes for 564 yards with another seven touchdown catches. Advertisement Expectations are sometimes different from reality, especially when McCaffrey is recovering from two separate injuries that sidelined him for 13 games last season. But regardless of McCaffrey's recent injury history, the San Francisco backfield is ranked No. 12 in ProFootballFocus' recent grades. "The 49ers are one of the hardest teams to project for this list, given Christian McCaffrey's recent injury history," wrote PFF's Dalton Wasserman. "Across 2022 and 2023, he was the NFL's highest-graded running back. His injuries in 2024 limited him to just 167 snaps and a 71.3 PFF overall grade. McCaffrey is supremely talented, but he enters his age-29 season with more questions than ever. "Isaac Guerendo did a decent job in spot duty last season, earning a 67.2 PFF rushing grade. The team also added fifth-round rookie Jordan James, who recorded an elite 95.7 PFF rushing grade over the past two seasons at Oregon." Advertisement Don't expect McCaffrey to be reintroduced to the offense slowly; however, that is the custom sometimes when players return from injury. Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak thinks McCaffrey will be fine if the team is smart with his usage. "You're always cognizant of the reps you're putting on guys, especially in practice, when we do that with Christian all the time, we monitor his reps, and you have to be smart when you're in games," Kubiak continued. "You have to be cognizant of how much they're out there. 49ers 2nd-Round Rookie DT Compared to Hall of Famer
49ers 2nd-Round Rookie DT Compared to Hall of Famer originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Perhaps the greatest compliment a San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle can draw is a comparison to Hall of Famer Bryant Young. Advertisement Young is a Super Bowl champion, four-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro for the 49ers who was selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2022. He is the epitome of consistency at the position with 627 tackles, 89.5 sacks, 12 forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries across 208 career games. At least one analyst sees a little of Young in San Francisco's second-round pick this year, Alfred Collins. "Given the dominance of San Francisco's defensive line over the past quarter-century, it might surprise you to learn that the 49ers haven't produced a defensive tackle with more than one Pro Bowl to their credit since Young was honored after the 2001 and 2002 campaigns," writes Fox Sports' Rob Rang. Advertisement "Young was big and powerful, but also surprisingly agile and a very instinctive defender. Collins is still figuring things out, but his physical traits are like something generated on AI. If the 49ers hit on him, they truly will have struck gold." Collins is 6-6 and 332 pounds and will give the 49ers some much-needed size in the middle of the defensive line. His college team in Austin, Texas, allowed just 2.9 yards per carry the past two seasons with Collins filling up the middle of the Longhorns' defensive line. There's a good chance Collins can start as a rookie, too, although there will be some competition. Jets Send Message to C.J. Mosley After Major Career Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets will look very different from last season after finishing with a 7-10 record under quarterback Aaron Rodgers and head coach Robert Salah. Advertisement New York fired head coach Robert Salah just five games into the 2024 season and has also moved on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Now, with first-year head coach Aaron Glenn and quarterback Justin Fields, the Jets will also be without one of their long-time linebackers moving forward. After New York released C.J. Mosley back in March, he announced on his 33rd birthday that he's decided to retire from the NFL. The Jets posted on X, shouting out the linebacker who spent six years with the franchise. "Forever a leader. Congrats on a great career," The New York Jets said. After being selected in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft by Baltimore Ravens, Mosley went on to be elected to the Pro Bowl in four of the five years he was with the Ravens. Advertisement Mosley signed with the New York Jets as an unrestricted free agent in 2019 but struggled with injuries during his time there. He played just two games in his first season with the Jets but missed only one game over the next three seasons. He earned New York's Team MVP award in 2021 and was elected to another Pro Bowl game in 2022. New York Jets linebacker C.J. MosleySteve Roberts-Imagn Images In 2024, however, he was sidelined for 13 games due to a toe injury and a herniated disc in his neck. Mosley's career statistics include 1,082 total tackles, 12 sacks, 10 forced fumbles and 12 interceptions in 133 games played for the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Jets. Advertisement After 10 seasons, five Second-Team All-Pro selections, and five Pro Bowl honors, C.J. Mosley has called it quits in the league and will look towards other life endeavors This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 19, 2025, where it first appeared.
